Hormone Therapy

Editor, Times-Union:
The July 9th edition of the Times Union had an article by Bonnie Erbe called "Exploding the Myth of Hormone Replacement Therapy." Ms. Erbe said that she will not take Premarin or Prempro when she reaches peri-menopause or menopause.

We have great news for her and all women: Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. BHRT is replacement therapy using hormones that are chemically identical to the hormones produced by your body.

Commonly prescribed synthetic hormones have chemical structures and activities that are not identical. Both bioidentical and synthetic hormones may be produced in a laboratory using pharmaceutical-grade products. It is the chemical structure of a hormone, not its source, that sets bioidenticals apart. Wouldn't you want to use an exact replica of your original hormones?

The Women's Health Initiative study that was prematurely ended last summer involved ONLY Prempro, a combination of the ingredients found in the synthetics, Premarin and Provera. Bioidentical hormones were not included in the study. The original purpose of this study was to assess the long-term risks and benefits of synthetic hormones in chronic disease prevention. While there were fewer fractures and cases of colorectal cancer, the number of cases of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease reached the number that automatically stopped the study. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend consultation with a physician to use hormones for short term relief of the symptoms of menopause.

Working with your physician, we can individualize your hormone therapy. These hormones require a prescription and are not a one size fits all. The best part about BHRT is that it can be specifically formulated for your symptoms and lifestyle. And what could be better than mimicking nature? You do not have to choose between safety and sleepless night, mood swings and hot flashes.

Deceptions

Editor, Times-Union:
Will Rogers said, "I only know what I read in the paper." We only know what we read in the Times-Union or hear on the news. Our editor, Gary Gerard's, editorials are fair and enlightening as are many of the other editorials.

It is distressing to realize the flagrant deceptions of George Bush and his administration. There is something that disturbs me even more and that is the drowsy acceptance of all his duplicity by the American public.

Where are the outcries against the abuse of power? There are few voices to be heard. Consider the excessive force allowed by the so-called Patriot Act. It is a usurpation of one of our inalienable rights, which is to protect us from excessive force and unfair treatment by our government. It's one of our freedoms.

Our military (our young men) were sent overseas to find Osama Bin Ladin. What ever happened to him? That search was put on a back burner to conduct the war in Iraq. Remember? That was to find WMD and Saddam Hussein. Neither have been found and so the title of "The War" was switched to "Free Iraqis."

Recently there was a buck being passed because of 16 words regarding the purchase of uranium by Iraq. Sixteen little words were included in the president's message. George W. finally accepted the buck but, meanwhile, several persons have had their credibility tarnished. Most recently, Condoleeza Rice has become the most prominent and conspicuous member of the bogus uranium league. Did W know this information was false? Whether it was an honest mistake or not is further reason to doubt our administration's competence.

Haven't you had it with miscommunication? September 11th was an egregious example. There have been downright lies and misleadings as well.

Another area of concern is our monumental national debt which, incidentally, increases by$4 billion each month. For what? To keep peace in the country we "freed" and where our young men and women are being killed or injured each day.

This is merely a brief coverage of the things that should cause us concern. Our government has used duplicity and secrecy too long.

Who is being fooled? It's you and formerly us.

Blood Donations

Editor, Times-Union:
My purpose in this letter is to express my sincere appreciation to the residents of Kosciusko County, and specifically to those residents who donated blood on July 8 during our "Save a Life Tour" bloodmobile at Center Lake Pavilion. Donations totaling 143 units of blood were received that day, and a grand total of 252 units were collected during the month of July throughout Kosciusko County!

However, the need for blood remains critical as the supply of certain blood types remains at less than two days. The next opportunity to donate blood locally at a public drive will take place Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Center Lake Pavilion in Warsaw. I urge you to call 800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) and schedule an appointment to participate in this blood drive.

Summer months bring special challenges to our Blood Services Program, as many people travel on vacation and are away from home as they enjoy the warm summer months. Therefore, the number of blood donations tends to fall, however, the need for blood remains constant. If you have not recently taken the time to donate blood, I want to encourage you to consider this opportunity during the month of August as every blood donation is important!

In conclusion, please know that on behalf of the American Red Cross, I want to thank the residents of our county for their ongoing support. Clearly, "By working together, we can save a life!" Won't you consider sharing the "Gift of Life" by donating blood?
