Fair Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to thank the Kosciusko County Fair Association, judges and everyone involved with the 1998 Youth Talent Contest. There is limited opportunity for young people in this community to perform and the experience is greatly appreciated. I will be proud to represent Kosciusko County at the State Fair.

Immunization

Editor, Times Union:
What if I were to tell you that there was an immunization your baby could receive right after birth that would greatly reduce the risk of childhood illness and disease?

No needles would be required - it is given orally. There are no negative side effects and it's absolutely free.

Less than 50 percent of the babies in Kosciusko County will receive the benefits of this superior substance.

Fewer sicknesses and free of charge - it sounds to good to be true. It is very true and readily available. It's been around since the beginning of time and hasn't changed a bit. Drought or famine can't take it away and the computer problem in the year 2000 will not impact its distribution.

Do you have any guesses?
Believe it or not, it is breast milk. There are so many myths and misconceptions about breast-feeding that it often gets a bad rap.

A mother can lose weight faster and lower her risk of getting breast, cervical and ovarian cancer. Night-time feedings are so simple for the breast-feeding mother. Her milk is always the right temperature and she won't have to make or clean bottles. Not to mention that she can save up to $2,000 the first year in formula costs alone.

For 4-1/2 years, I have worked as a breast-feeding counselor at the local Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. If every woman on the Indiana WIC program breast-fed for one month, there would be a savings of $1.2 million a day. Lots of these women and their children are on Medicaid and healthier babies can save the government billions of dollars.

August 1-7 will celebrate the seventh annual World Breast-feeding Week. The object is to promote breast-feeding and encourage and educate families, employers and communities. Families will save money, have healthier and smarter babies, and save the landfill from tons of empty formula cans. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends mothers breast-feed their babies for the first year of life.

Let's all encourage pregnant and breast-feeding moms. It benefits all of us in some way or another, especially those little miracles we call children.

AWL Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
Our thanks to those of you who were able to find our Animal Welfare League booth at this year's Kosciusko County 4-H Fair. Many of you became members and gave freely of donations - we sincerely thank you.

The AWL message of spay-neuter is being heard and done by many and we are delighted to be able to assist you financially. To fund this essential project for animal population control, we need the monetary aid of pet owners and pet lovers alike. Can you find it in your hearts to join in our efforts? We certainly hope so. Membership is $10 a year per person, junior membership is $1 a year and lifetime membership is $250.

Our membership increases, but so do our applications for our assistance for spay-neuter. To date, July 27, 1998, we have 154 regular members, 11 lifetime memberships and a total of 10 junior members, plus four juniors with four legs each! Every dollar helps!

Please don't forget about foster care for puppies and kittens, of which little Poco was one such puppy. And of course there is the adoption program. Last week we added a permanent member to our family - Sara Ann, shi tzu - 6 weeks old and a whopping 1 pound 8 ounces! Spooky, terrier mix with lots of Yorkie, is happy to have a "baby sister" for his fourth birthday present. Yes, Sara will be spayed when she's older, Spooky was neutered three years ago. We too believe in animal control, including chain link fenced yard.

We need your help with our programs - spay/neuter, foster care, adoption, current inoculations, education, all leading to our "no kill" theory. Can we count on you? We can be reached at P.O. Box 1906, Warsaw, IN 46581-1906, or by calling 267-8566 or 269-2108.

We'll take my chances anytime with the translation of "woof-woof" and "meow-meow" meaning thank you.

Softball League

Editor, Times-Union:
With all the controversy lately over the softball league and their rules, you wonder, is this something I want my daughter(s) involved in? Well, I would say YES.

My husband and I coached a great bunch of girls this year. We had a long season, but exciting. Our record was lousy, we only won two games all season. But someone has to be on the losing end and this year it was us. But it never seemed to affect the girls. They never gave up. The only time they missed was for vacation and camp. You would think after losing they would stop showing up but they didn't. We weren't an easy team to beat. We stayed competitive through most of the game but just couldn't get over the hump of finally winning. We usually only lost by 1-5 points. Our biggest mistake was that we weren't swinging. Our fielding and pitching were good. Our team was the Bumblebees and the girls' names are: Barbara Taylor, Gina Cesaretti, Courtney and Miranda Flenar, Emily Gaither, Ashley Logan, Leah Espinoza, Megan Schuster, Stefani Castle, Kim Clevenger and Alicia Adams.

At this time I would like to thank Kathy Taylor for keeping books. Also I would like to thank LeeAnn Flenar for helping coach. And to Tim Taylor for umpiring when he could. All teams need parent volunteers. Without them we would have had to do a lot of stuff by ourselves. It takes some of the stress from the coaches when you have parents who can help out.

We would like to thank Wendy Hopper, Jennifer Hathway and Cayla that came up from intermediate on different occasions to help us finish our team of 10, to play on certain nights when we didn't have enough girls.

As you can tell, winning is not everything. We were fortunate to have a great bunch of girls, with a good attitude and a willingness to learn and to come to play ball.

Thanks again.
