Time Zones

Editor, Times-Union:
As we proceed to observing daylight savings time in 2006, consideration is being given to whether north central Indiana should observe Central time, as opposed to Eastern time. Although this may seem trivial, we should carefully consider the ramifications of such a decision.

Being on the extreme eastern edge of the Central time zone will cause it to be dark one hour earlier in the winter than what we are used to (and of course, light one hour earlier as well). Although parts of Indiana have close ties to Chicago, and some believe that we should observe Central time, no other state which lies at a latitude as far north, and at a longitude as far east, as Indiana, observes Central time year round (Michigan, as we know, being in the Eastern time zone). Being at the far northeast edge of the Central time zone will cause darkness to come very early in the day during the winter. For many of us, winter days are filled with hours of working indoors. Leaving an artificial lighting environment into near darkness during bitter cold days may prove to be a difficult transition to make. We are already used to the winter hours that we keep, I would suggest that keep them as they are. Instead, we should observe Eastern time in the summer and maximize the intended benefit of daylight savings time (more light in the evenings during warm months when we are busy with outdoor after work family activities).

Center Of Hope

Editor, Times-Union:
Kosciusko and surrounding counties are blessed to have available to them here in Warsaw, The Center of Hope, which treats multiple kinds of cancers. Patients are met and treated by a staff of caring teams of Oncologists and Specialists who provide professional and personal care. It is no longer necessary to travel great distances to receive the kind of necessary treatment prescribed by physicians. Cancer treatment is available right here in Warsaw at 1520 Provident Drive near the hospital.

Also available is a support group called "The Circle of Hope" which meets monthly at the Center of Hope on the last Tuesday evening of the month at 7 p.m.

Our mission statement reads: "We are a Christ-centered cancer support group that provides emotional and spiritual support as well as encouragement and comfort for anyone dealing with cancer. Monthly meetings provide hope and inspiration as we share life experiences and a common fellowship."

We encourage patients and caregivers to come join us. Our meetings are always informative and interesting with professionals speaking and sharing from their area of expertise. We also share the importance of arts, crafts and miscellaneous topics. Won't you come and join us Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.?

Respect For Property

Editor, Times-Union:
I told my husband today that is was time to ask some questions of this community.

What is stealing anyway? If you go to a grocery store or any store that has carts, is it stealing to take the cart and walk home with it and not return it?

Case in point. We have two Dollar General carts sitting in the alley behind our house. It appears my husband will have to load them up and take them back because the people who took them are too lazy to take them back. Now to me this is theft. If you are handicapped and need a cart and return it, no problem. That is of course if you asked permission to do so. Those carts cost lots of money folks. You end up paying for it in higher fees where you shop. If you steal something it takes a thousand times that to make it up for that theft. It is no wonder things are so expensive.

And while I am on my bandwagon today, the other thing is respect of property. We have had several instances of people using our driveway as an alley. I am known as the grumpy old woman because I tell the people I catch that it is a driveway not a vacated alley and my property. Likewise, I see everyday during the school year young people walking through yards to get to the bus. Yards that are not theirs. In less than a week we had two or three neighborhood boys destroying the garage of our neighbor lady. She works different hours and was not at home at the time. The first time they were tearing off the protective screening put up because the windows had been broken out. The second time they were opening the door to the garage and looking in. What in the world gives anybody the right to be on someone else's property and destroying it or using it or just plain snooping?

Both of the above issues really bother me. It comes down to people not respecting the property of others. Trespassing and theft or punishable crimes folks. Get a life.grow up and become decent human beings.

Questions Central Time

Editor, Times-Union:
As per the Saturday's paper, Commissioner Jentz of Marshall county says as per public held meetings, that the public wants the counties of Marshall, Kosciusko and St. Joseph to be in the Central Zone, with hopes of adding Elkhart as well.

The very big question is, when were these so-called public meetings held? What times, what dates, who was in attendance?

Unless I failed to see the notice, I saw none listed in the Times Union, or in The Paper or any announcements on the radio stations. Unless I am missing something it begins to have about the same bad smell as was put forth a few years back, when a few individuals got together to force the passing of the Economic Development Income Tax upon an unsuspecting public. At the last time that I checked, a map of this county has at least two other borders. One joining to the East with Whitley, and on the South with Wabash counties and should either or both of these counties decide to be in the Eastern time zones what has been decided as to how all those effected Kosciusko residents are supposed to act or do?

It seems to be that those people who have school children, or go to work or have most of their business affairs related to these counties are totally to be regarded as non-existent. Or in some way are not to be included in any public discussions as to their time issues. Then there are all of those people who live in Kosciusko County, but work in Allen County. There is absolutely nothing that so far says Allen County and the other eastern counties want to be in the Eastern Time Zone and then all those counties to the west want to join them because of all of the cross-social and employment functions. I would personally say that those who caused this problem ought to be completely voted out of office. But since this can't be done at this time, then do the next best thing and don't put the Time Change in effect. Instead, have the time law rescinded and leave the time as is.

And if there are to be public meetings held, hold them in Kosciusko County, not Marshall or St. Joseph counties. Then make them known to all the people via the radio, the Times Union and The Paper news papers and not just to those individuals who are members of the so-call Economic Corporations and to those whose special interests they represent.

'Singing In The Rain'

Editor, Times-Union:
"Singing in the Rain" was such a terrific show my friend, Joan and I both thought it was one of the best shows we had ever seen. I don't know what seat David Slone was in and what he saw, but he should have had our seats. Where we were sitting it was wonderful. The rain, dancing and singing plus the way Michael Vangemert was enjoying himself was worth seeing again just for that song. Come on, David, let's see you perform something like that. Great show, Wagon Wheel.

Questions Sentence

Editor, Times-Union:
Well, it has happened again! The court system has failed the people of Kosciusko County one more time. The Schues have been doing this for years, and Judge, do you think, by you telling them "Don't do it again", that will stop them?

I think the people of this county should remember this sentencing on election day, and sweep the court system clean! Maybe we will get more drug dealers, like these, off the streets, and put where they belong.
