Car Show

Editor, Times-Union:
The car show which took place July 20 downtown seems to have had a few quirks. Such as, why would you close the streets at 3 a.m. when the show did not start until noon or 3 p.m.? The times seemed to change; it really depended on which article or flier you read. I work at one of the 12 or so businesses that are open on Saturday. Our customers were unable to come to us, especially the seniors and handicapped. These people are unable to walk four or five blocks. Warsaw spent a lot of money to improve downtown in hopes it would draw more people to the stores. But with what happened Saturday, a lot of the would-be customers and visitors left. There should be votes cast among the businesses in town as to the closing times of streets for these events. There are a lot of unhappy business owners at this point. Business for downtown is on the upswing and we need to keep it that way. There really needs to be some changes made before more businesses move from downtown.

Libertarians

Editor, Times-Union:
As Mr. Stevens wrote 7-11-2002, the Libertarian Party is taking ground from Democrats and Republicans. Why, because they generally are wrong. They are wrong morally, ethically and constitutionally.

Both President Clinton and George Bush Jr. promised smaller government. We are getting much more government and less money in our pockets and freedoms. The Libertarian Party wants the individual to have more money and freedom.

Closing Downtown

Editor, Times-Union:
JEERS to the powers that be for closing off downtown on Saturday, July 20. We arrived at work to find all the streets blocked off for a "car show." We were not notified ahead of time. The streets were blocked off from early morning and the "car show" did not even begin until 3 p.m. All the small business people downtown were adversely affected on one of our most busy shopping days. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the "car show" in the park or at a school parking lot where it would not interrupt our small downtown business? Events like this do not encourage people to come downtown and shop, it drives them away. Please use more common sense in the future and consider the impact of your decisions on the downtown merchants.

Understanding Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) And Using Them
Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
