Shriners
Editor, Times-Union:Last Saturday (July 17), the Times-Union printed a front page article in reference to "Local Shriner Leads Mizpah Temple." A very good article and factual with one very major exception. Quote: "There's no charge at all to any of these families," Hall said, adding the Shriners spend approximately $500,000 each year on the assistance program." Potentate John Hall made the statement that Shriners spend approximately $500,000,000 (five hundred million) which is the correct figure. It takes that much to operate the 18 orthopedic and four burn hospitals each year, to think about it approximately $1,350,000 each and every day of the year, seven days a week. That is why Shrine is known to be the world's greatest philanthropy. Shriners never die, they just live in the hearts of the children.

4-H Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:This past week was the Kosciusko County 4-H fair. On Saturday, July 10, we took the opportunity to recognize our 4-H members and many volunteers at our annual awards night. I would like to say a big thanks to all of our sponsors who provided awards for the 4-H members who were recognized at our program. Many businesses and groups donated gift certificates, money and awards.
As a past 10-year 4-H member in Kosciusko County, I know that our many sponsors are truly appreciated. Thanks again to our sponsors and volunteers who made July 10 a special and meaningful program for our 4-H members!

Stop Liquor License
Editor, Times-Union:To the residents of Winona Lake ... Please be aware that one of the new shops in Village of Winona is applying for a liquor license Aug. 5. This license is to sell wine. However, there are several types of licenses. Once you apply and receive the first type, it is very easy to upgrade the license to a full liquor license selling more than beer and wine.
Please help us stop this license by opposing it with your appearance at the Alcoholic Beverage Commission meeting Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. in the old courtroom of the courthouse. If you would like to attend and need a ride, please call 269-6086.
Help keep Winona Lake the small religious community it was meant to be by our forefathers: Billy Sunday, Homer Rodeheaver and others who were concerned about keeping alcoholic beverages out of the town of Winona Lake. Thank you for your support!

Publish Congressional Perks
Editor, Times-Union:Mr. Gary Gerard does an excellent job of presenting the thoughts and feelings of a good percentage of the readers of the Times-Union, and I am certain, of a large number of voters across the country.
Our paper should publish as a public service just what monies and perks that congressmen, as a whole, receive from both the taxpayers and honoraries. It would enable your readers to judge for themselves just how far below the poverty line the members of Congress are forced to subsist.
The list could commence with pay and then proceed through, but not limited to, such things as retirement benefits including social security, stationery account, congressional barber shops, restaurants, gyms, travel allowances, trips to home areas, emergency medical services, federal telecommunications system, etc.
About 15 years, or so, didn't they slip through as an amendment to some bill or other a pay raise disguised as an expense account in the amount of $12,000 per year?
According to the U.S. News & World Report of April 16, 1984, it cost the taxpayers approximately $747,000,000 to support Congress. That doesn't include what they were able to weasel out of the state and defense departments on their worldwide junkets. Then, there is always slipping the kids headed for colleges on "Daddy's" office payroll. If that is too blatant, there is always a "good old friend" who owes "Daddy" a "little favor."
