Support Troops
Editor, Times-Union:The war in Iraq rages on in one form or another. I don't like the fact that everything we are trying to do for them seems to be for nothing. The Iraqi people do not seem to appreciate the expense of American lives and American money. So for this matter I am gravely unhappy about our involvement. But, and this is a huge exception ... whether I agree with what is going on or not is not the issue. This is what gets lost in the media and in articles on the net and in news magazines. The fact is we have men and women risking their lives every day for the freedom of people that are unknown to us but not to them. Let's not have another Vietnam debate on whether or not we should be there and then treat the people who are serving like lepers when they come home. Let's all agree to support our troops and their efforts. Let's all agree on keeping them safe and alive. We need funds and we need help from other countries. The issue is not bringing them home. The issue is when they come home we treat them like the honorable men and women they are. We thank them for a job well done. It does not matter whether the Iraqi people appreciate their efforts, it is a matter of whether we do. Let's all pray that this will end soon, but until this happens, support our men and women while they are there and especially when they come home.

Editor, Times-Union:American Legion Post 49 will always be thankful for what the Times-Union has done for the veterans. We at Post 49 wish to apologize to Teresa Smith. We were so thankful for the promotion of our cause that we forgot to thank Teresa for a very important contribution she has made for our country. Teresa is a Navy veteran and her husband is a 10-year Marine veteran. I know this is well overdue, but better late than never. We at American Legion Post 49, Warsaw, want to thank both of you for your unselfish service to our country.

Freedom Of Speech
Editor, Times-Union:Re:: David Beall's reply to Blake Dirks, on July 22.
Regarding David Beall's facts, Fact one: (Iraq's WMD) That really wasn't our problem, was it? It wasn't used on us prior to our invasion. Fact two: (Iraq's non-cooperation with U.N. inspectors) Did those inspectors, or anyone since, locate the massive stockpiles of WMD? No. Fact three: (Military action authorized against Iraq in 2003) True. Under conditions that were not met. Fact four: (Iraq agents in contact with al-Qaida) Our officials have contact with al-Qaida. So? And lastly, in my opinion, you are worse than Blake Dirks. You want to imprison someone for his freedom of speech. Tell me, did you feel the same about Oliver Stone and "JFK"?

Wagon Wheel
Editor, Times-Union:My family and I have been in Portland, Ore., for almost three years now and never have I been so tempted to fly back as I was upon reading about the cast line-up for the Wagon Wheel's "Beauty and the Beast." An incredible show like that with wonderful Dan and delightful Tony and of course Rod (whose charm, talent and looks seem to appeal to females 8 to 80, including myself!) is almost enough to make me go online looking for cheap plane tickets.
As a former usher for five years, I can almost close my eyes and imagine what a fantastic show this must be. I may not be there in person, but I sure will be lingering in spirit!
