In response to Mr. Blake Dirks' letter, I must express my sincere appreciation for a very insightful lesson in history, foreign policy and constitutional law. When I went to Borders to get my copy of "Citizenship for Dummies," they were plum out, so his primer was definitely needed. I can't speak for Mssrs. Guard and Kaiser, but having followed their contributions to this publication over the years, I'm sure they are truly humbled by your chastisement of their respective positions. That being said, let me throw in my 2 cents.
While Michael Moore and all his Hollywood cohorts are entitled to their opinions - and judging from the tone and tenor of your letter, you share those opinions - none of you are entitled to your own facts. Facts are tough things to deal with, particularly when they don't support your position.
Fact One: Saddam Hussein had and used weapons of mass destruction on his "enemies," foreign and domestic. This is irrefutable.
Fact Two: Saddam Hussein refused to cooperate with United Nations inspectors sent to confirm he had destroyed his WMD as mandated by numerous Security Council resolutions and the cease fire agreement halting military action against him in 1991. This is irrefutable.
Fact Three: Under a unanimous Security Council vote (abstentions notwithstanding), military action against the Hussein regime was authorized in 2003. This too is irrefutable.
Fact Four: Iraqi agents most certainly meet with representatives of al-Qaeda. While this does not mean Iraq had any involvement in the attacks of 9-11, (no one in the Bush administration ever made this claim, by the way), it certainly points to a cordial relationship between a rogue state and an independent terrorist organization bent on doing us harm.
These are facts, Mr. Dirks. Irrefutable facts. Not the unsubstantiated innuendo and outright lies that Michael Moore and his comrades spew incessantly hoping that telling a lie long enough and loud enough will actually dupe the American public into accepting that his "schlockumentary" portrays the truth, when it is his assertions that are based on lies.
I personally don't believe that Michael Moore and his friends should leave the country, Mr. Dirks. I believe what they have said and done is treason: a violation of allegiance toward one's country or the betrayal of one's country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies. Due to their actions, I think they should be required to stay in this country - Fort Leavenworth comes to mind - for the aid and comfort they have given our terrorist enemies by disseminating their despicable, demonstrably false propaganda.
As to your comments on France - They gave the founding fathers arms to stick it in the eye of their longtime enemy - the British. We gave the blood and lives of millions to save French derrieres twice because they were too cowardly and duplicitous to take care of themselves. There is no comparison, Mr. Dirks.
