Parade Committee Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:The Etna Green July 4 Events and Parade Committee would like to thank the Times-Union staff for all your assistance with the advertising to help make our three days of events so successful.
A special thank you to T.B. Conley Transport, The First State Bank of Bourbon, Roberts Signs and to Carl Wireman for your contributions to the committee.
Thank you to the Triton girls and boys basketball teams, coaches, cheerleaders and managers for giving up a summer day to be our parade marshals, and to Steve and Judy Nifong for pulling the tram for the parade.
Thank you to all the businesses and individuals who donated prizes for our adult bingo games, to our event sponsors and to the many individuals, organizations, churches and businesses who helped before, during and after any of our events over the three-day period. We also appreciate all those from the community and nearby areas who came to help us enjoy the slate of events.

Prayer And Football
Editor, Times-Union:The Supreme Court recently ruled, by 6 to 3, to forbid students from leading voluntary public prayer before football games.
As an evangelical Christian and a patriot, I have mixed reactions.
n I am not surprised. The purging process started at least 38 years ago when the Court booted God out of the classroom. Secularization has continued apace ever since.
n I am saddened at the erosion of yet another constitutional right. I agree with Chief Justice William Rehnquist's scathing denunciation: [It] "bristles with hostility to all things religious in public life."
n Most of all, I am intrigued and excited at the potential for heartfelt worship in a public setting. (Even though it might cost us something. Think of the possibilities, given the sincerity and ingenuity of our young people today: A spontaneous expression of the Lord's Prayer at a high school game next year; risking a delay of game penalty due the clutter of players kneeling on the field; singing the second verse of the National Anthem (My own personal favorite!); all those I haven't thought of)!
Charles Colson in his BreakPoint - June 21, 2000, suggests three responses to this decision:
First, know your history. The courts and politicians can ignore history, but they can't change it. The founders of our country made it clear that religion in public life was essential. To quote John Adams, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people."
Then we must involve ourselves in the political process, from school boards to the White House, because God didn't put us here to cower. The next president could appoint four Supreme Court justices, enough to turn the tide - so watch what the candidates say.
And third, maybe we should let the Court know it has gone too far. The Court was never intended to be the final authority of what is or is not constitutional. Many good Texans, I suspect, will go to football games this fall and defy the Court's order.
To our young people for whom spiritual matters are important, we say "Go for it!" Carolyn and I will be praying for you.
O thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just;
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust!"
And the star spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Be Thankful You're Alive
Editor, Times-Union:In regards to Albert Smith's letter about his accident, I'm sure I'm not the only one that is tired of hearing about it.
There are people that are in accidents every day and they don't dwell on theirs like you do. Be thankful you are at least alive with pain. I'm sure that Shawnee Ulrey, Jill Carpenter and numerous people that I haven't mentioned would love to trade places with you. At least you are with your family; these folks are not, because they passed away.
A friend of mine got electrocuted at his work and died. You don't hear anymore about that. The really sad thing is, is that he left a wife that is due any time with their first child. I'm sure he would definitely love to trade places with you, and to be able to see his child be born and hold the baby in his arms. So the next time you want to complain about your aches and pains just be thankful you're alive.

Special Olympics Support
Editor, Times-Union:On behalf of the Kosciusko County Special Olympics, I want to let the community know about the generosity of the Knights of Columbus.
This year, as in past years, they will be the Kosciusko County Special Olympics' biggest financial supporter. Without their support, the Special Olympics would have difficulty offering the athletic and social opportunities we are currently able to offer. Recently, our athletes participated in the Indiana State games. What a shining example of what community support can make possible! Kosciusko County Special Olympics athletes demonstrated courage, personal best and team work, and came away with several gold medals. Thanks, Knights of Columbus, for your support!
