Flag Protection
Editor, Times-Union:On Tuesday, July 17, the House of Representatives will vote on HJ Res. 36, the Cunningham-Murtha Flag-Protection Amendment. The amendment reads: "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."
The flag was protected until 1989, when the Supreme Court ruled such desecration was free speech. But it's not speech; it's conduct. The Supreme Court made a mistake, and it's our obligation to correct that mistake.
Millions of Americans have died in defense of this country and the freedoms the flag represents. Contact your representative and urge them to vote in favor of HJ Res. 36. Give Americans back the right to protect the symbol of this country.

Campaign Spending
Editor, Times-Union:The amount of money being spent by candidates for political office is a disgrace and is stupid!
A job applicant in the private sector is required to follow the procedures established by the business,. A candidate for political office is applying for a job from "we the people." Therefore, we have the right to set the parameters for the politicians to follow such as the following: "Paid political advertising is to be restricted to the period 30 days prior to election day. There are to be no more than three ads per day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening."
This is NOT a restriction on freedom of speech. A candidate may run his/her mouth all they want. The limit set forth as suggested above is for "we the people" to have control of our homes.
If the politician is not capable of informing us of his/her qualifications within this time span, that person certainly is not qualified to fulfill the duties of the job being sought.

Etna Green Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:We would like to extend a thank-you to all those who helped make our two days of events in Etna Green a success.
Our appreciation goes out to so many who helped us in some way such as our parade participants, food and craft booth participants and event sponsors.
Many local and area businesses and individuals gave a monetary contribution. Without the generosity of such people, we could not have such a successful celebration.
A special thanks to those who attended monthly planning meetings. The support and cooperation from our community made the events happen.
Thanks to all and God bless,
R.B. Conley and Sharon Hollar

Illegal Imports
Editor, Times-Union:I have a few questions. Why would our politicians watch the steel industry in the United States be destroyed by illegal imports? Doesn't illegal still mean what it used to? Why not give the American worker a level playing field? After hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost in this country, doesn't it make sense to reconsider the "free trade" plan? Are our politicians more concerned about corporate investments in other counties than they are about thier constituents? If we allow such a vital industry as steel to be illegally destroyed, which industry is next? Haven't we given enough away? Have all our politicians in Washington, D.C., lost all sense of reality? Maybe we should send them a wake-up call next election time.
Friday June 30 was a real sad day for all of us that work at Dalton Foundry, as we watched our co-workers being laid off. Some of us that are left are being moved around to replace our friends being laid off, including myself. Let's all work together to save the American people.

AWL Needs Help
Editor, Times-Union:I have been a volunteer at the Animal Welfare League in Kosciusko County for about four years and I love what I do there. I feed the dogs and cats, clean their cages and at the same time give the dogs and cats some attention. What I hate though, is when dogs and cats are euthanized because of the lack of space! I know that it has to happen, yet I wish more could get adopted.
It all starts when an owner doesn't spay or neuter their dogs or cats. In an average week, 10 dogs and cats are brought in to the AWL, as well as litters of puppies and kittens. Everyone who works at the shelter just can't say enough of how they wish people would spay or neuter their dogs or cats. The shelter wouldn't have to euthanize as often if people would be responsible.
The AWL right now is in need of puppy and kitten food, donations and lots of adoptions. And ... spay or neuter your dogs and cats.

Thanks To Sponsors
Editor, Times-Union:I would like to take this opportunity to give a special thanks to all the people and businesses that were so gracious enough to give donations towards my AAU national trip to Florida in July.
I would like to give a special thanks to area newspapers for the articles each of them wrote about my AAU team. I feel very fortunate to have a community such as North Manchester who is so willing to support their athletes.

Driver Kills Dog
Editor, Times-Union:To the driver who struck and killed my dog July 9 on CR 200 around 8:15 p.m., maybe it is the lack of parental guidance when you were growing up or maybe you are just an insensitive coward. Whatever the case, you need to pick up the phone and call 267-3443 to apologize. You didn't just kill a dog, you killed a good friend and a member of our family.

Lake Restaurant
Editor, Times-Union:I have been a full time resident of Lake Tippecanoe for 24 years. I moved here because it was a beautiful recreational lake. I enjoy boating, skiing, fishing and just living here. I also enjoy eating. It was great when you could go to the Stoney Ridge Hotel and get a bite to eat by boat or car.
Now we have a chance to have another restaurant on the lake and a handful of people don't like it. This has always been a recreational lake ... not a retirement community. I suggest those people try Shoe Lake, they may find it more to their liking.
