Abandoned Cat
Editor, Times-Union:This is to the person that apparently dumped your tortoise-colored cat for someone else to take care of. I assume you dumped her because she wasn't wearing a collar and she's not really a "pretty" cat.
She probably was cute when she was small, but then she grew up. She came here in February and laid in the bushes outside our garage in the rain and snow. We took pity on her and put food out. We couldn't let her go without food in the cold. We later discovered she had ear mites so we treated her for those. Then we discovered she had worms (as all feral cats do) so we treated her for those also.
On May 7, she desperately needed a place to have her four kittens so we let her in our storage barn. This was apparently her first litter and she's been an incredible mother to these kittens. I'm sorry you can't enjoy them all as we have. They have stolen our hearts, but as much as we would love to keep them all, we've already done that with four others and we spayed and neutered each one and brought them inside! We have no more room!
Taking them to the shelter is not an option for me as I was told most are adopted when they are kittens, but when they grow up, the majority of them are likely to return. We have too much time and love invested in them all to do that. Every night at dusk we shut them in the barn to protect them from other cats running loose in the neighborhood and early every morning open it back up to let them get some exercise. A farmer told us he would take them, but he would not have them spayed or neutered which continually adds to the problem of the overcrowding and unwanted pets at the shelter.
These kittens are all ready to be adopted out to loving responsible owners, but until we find some, they will remain with us. If you find that taking them to the vet to be spayed or neutered is too expensive, there are alternatives. One is a spay/neuter clinic in Fort Wayne (260-424-5982). Call your local shelter and ask questions. They are a great help and if you have extra time, money or food to donate to them, they could really use it, as their budget has been cut.
It's not the animals' fault they are unwanted, it's people! Please spay and neuter your pets! And if you are in the position to give one of our kittens a loving home, please call us, we are in the book.

Setting A Date
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is a reply to the "target date" letter written by Tim Ault on July 12. I read your letter and your opinion really made me think. I am not trying to bash what you said, you have your opinion and I'm glad I'm not the only American willing to speak my mind. However, I believe that there is a problem with pressing President Bush to set any kind of date for our troops to come home. When it comes to our freedom, there should never be a timetable. America is doing what is necessary to ensure our freedom and peace throughout the world. Saddam was a threat to our security, WMDs or not. The torture treatment he impressed on his people was unbelievable and the fact that we are giving the country of Iraq a renewed sense of hope makes it worth everything. I have plenty of room to speak my mind. My best friend's brother is currently in Marine boot camp and I also have a neighbor in Iraq today. It may have been a mistake to go to war, but the fact of the matter is we are there now and we need to finish the job. If you have noticed, in almost every war America has been involved in, we have in some shape or form rebuilt the country we attack. That is not something we would do if we weren't committed to our cause! God bless America and continue to support our troops. President Bush may have made a mistake but it is up to us as a country to stand behind our men and women!

Responsible Pet Owners
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is addressed to all the people who think that the country is a drop off place for all of their unwanted pets.
In the last two weeks I have called animal control out to my house twice to pick up dogs that someone has dumped off. The first time there was two dogs and today there was two more dogs. Just because we live in the country does not mean we can keep your unwanted pets. Over the years, we have had several whole litters of dogs and cats. Including the mothers.
Right now I have two cats and my neighbor has three cats and a dog. All from someone dumping them at our place. We did the responsible thing. All of our pets have been spayed or neutered. They also have all of their shots. The cats are all inside pets. The dog has a fenced in yard where he can get plenty of exercise and not be roaming around the country.
Please, if you are going to have a pet make sure that you really want one and that you will take care of it the way you should. If you do not want your pet, take it to the animal shelter. There is no charge.
Just please stop dumping them in the country thinking that the house you dump them at will take care of them.
If someone has lost their dog in the Sidney area, you may want to check with the shelter.
Again, please be a responsible pet owner. Take care of your pets. The way you would want someone to take care of you.
