Sesquicentennial ThanksEditor, Times-Union:
The grand celebration marking the 150th year of Warsaw is over. There is not enough room in this paper to allow me to adequately thank all those persons who worked so diligently to make the celebration a success, so I will not try, but will only express a deep, heartfelt "Thank you" to all who volunteered. You who attended various events throughout the month of June and enjoyed the Grand Celebration, June 25, 26 and 27, were the recipients of a great gift from the planners, volunteers and supporters, a gift that was willingly given by those who wished to make Warsaw's Sesquicentennial memorable.
It is hard to measure how memories impact our lives, how memories add value and lift us from the toil of everyday living. Watching a parade or riding a street train around the downtown seems so small a thing, and yet these lend to our lives a sense of community, bring us joy, and provide memories to share with future generations. Yes, the gift that each volunteer gave to ensure the success of the many events of the Sesquicentennial is of greater value than even the giver knows. And while I know your names and offer you my words of appreciation, there are countless others who do not know your names, but are grateful just the same.

Late Fireworks
Editor, Times-Union:I realize that many people are going to say that I am off the mark here, but I want to get this off my chest anyway. I was not happy with the decision to have the fireworks in Warsaw/Winona Lake at 10:30 at night. I feel that the people that plan this event need to better inform people in the paper what they plan to do if there is rain, how late they will start it if the rain stops and so forth. If the fireworks cannot be completed by 10 p.m., then I think it should be delayed a day. There were many people who do not have TV Channel 4, and do not listen to local radio and thought it was canceled and left. Trying to get some sleep while fireworks go off like an atomic bomb and windows shaking is not very settling. I know from several people that the fireworks display was really nice and they enjoyed it. I am not trying to take that away from people, but I am speaking for those who thought the fireworks and noise curbed into bedtime and was not appreciated. I also hope that the event is better laid out for rain delays and such for next year - maybe it won't rain at all, but thank you in advance for not shooting off the fireworks that late again.

Veterans Series
Editor, Times-Union:Just thought I would like to throw my 2 cents worth in after viewing the article in the paper where Teresa Smith received her plaque for the interviews of a very, very small number of the veterans here in Kosciusko County. I believe she ignored the marjority of a lot of veterans in the small towns around Warsaw. Here in Etna Green alone the Stouder boys Glen, Veloris, Robert, Leonard and Cecil all served during World War II, plus there were Dallas and Richard who served after the war. Same goes for the Miner boys - Jim, Tom, Bud, with Dean serving after the war. Why a select few were chosen I have yet to find out. I am sure each town would have the same situation as Etna Green, and why a plaque was given for a job half done still escapes me.

Hochstetler Remembered
Editor, Times-Union:On June 29th, the Sheriff's Department had a memorial for Det. Sgt. Phil Hochstetler.
It's been 10 years since Phil was shot to death by David Swearingen during a theft investigation.
The K-County Ladies Police Auxiliary was honored to serve refreshments to all the officers, family members and guests after this very solemn occasion.
We would publicly like to thank the area supermarkets and other businesses who gave all of their generous donations.
Thank you, from the K-County Ladies Police Auxiliary.
