Animal Welfare

Editor, Times-Union:
Fact: There are more than 70,000 people living in Kosciusko County.

Fact: There are approximately 250 animals at the Animal Welfare League Pet Rescue and Adoption Center.

Fact: Good, healthy animals and pregnant animals are being euthanized at the Center because of overcrowding.

Fact: On July 1, for example, 16 dogs were brought to the Center.

Fact: Only a handful of people volunteer their time at the Center.

Fact: The AWL is getting $30,000 from the County instead of the $160,000+ the County was paying when it was the Humane Shelter.

There is definitely something wrong with this picture. What is it going to take to wake up the people of this county? We need help and we need money. And as long as people continue not getting their animals spayed/neutered, the euthanasia will continue. And that breaks the heart of every employee and volunteer out there. If you're not sure if you want your pet spayed/neutered, come out to the Center and take a tour. Look into the eyes of the animals as they peer at you through bars. And if that doesn't make you get your pet spayed/neutered, well, then you're certainly not, and never will be, a responsible pet owner. If you need financial assistance to have your pet spayed/neutered, even though our funds are certainly limited, the AWL will pay half of the cost. Contact any local veterinarian for the required form.

Cemetery Vandalism

I have lived in Warsaw all my life and have never felt the need to write the Editor before now. My father passed away in December and his final resting place is Oakwood Cemetery here in Warsaw. Oakwood is a lovely place and they do a fantastic job keeping it up. However my problem lies with the people who do the vandalizing there! We are still mourning the death of our father, the pain is still fresh in our minds and our hearts, we visit him twice a day everyday and know the cemetery like the backs of our hands. Tonight we went to say goodnight and to our dismay there were three ornaments broken and one was hand made and painted especially for him by a young granddaughter. The grave next to our dad's had things missing as well. Can you imagine how hurt we were? People should have more respect for the deceased, they can't protect their things. How would they feel if it was their father, mother, brother, etc.? We spoke with the sexton of Oakwood and he said there's been kids running around the cemetery since school has let out, parents let's tell our children the cemetery is the final resting place of all our loved ones and we must have respect for them. I hope who ever did this that their conscience is bothering them. I know they, themselves have to meet God someday as well and will be judged for this.

Lottery Winnings

Who! Won the lottery? The newspapers, TV and radio reported that a 21-year-old woman from Minnesota won the $150 million lottery. Maybe they should have told us all that the real winner was the government. If they didn't, what happened to the $100 million dollars, that the 21-year-old woman from Minnesota didn't win? O yeah, I hate to bust anyone's bubble, or rain on anyone's parade, or kick anyone's dog, etc; BUT, for every dollar, that 21-year-old woman from Minnesota spends out of her $50 million left after taxes, if she's lucky. Our wonderful government will take out sales tax, property tax, federal income tax, state tax, local county tax, social security tax, EDIT tax, gasoline tax, excise tax. Did I forget any? The 21-year-old woman from Minnesota probably won't even come close to winning $50 millon. So I guess all of you people who just love to play the lotteries, keep up the good work! You're making the government very rich. O yeah, aren't they a nonprofit organization! Have a nice day.

We the people celebrate the unanimous signing of the Declaration of Independence in which Thomas Jefferson, being an ardent and enlightened student of history, wrote these words:

"When in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness - That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, ..."

Well aware of Jefferson's assertion that we are all products of nature - simple biology as it were; and those born free with no predisposition to religious doctrine, whose rights come from those who created us, several delegates insisted on a reference to a Supreme being. Jefferson added these final words:

"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."

By these words, it's easy to tell that these were strong, brave, determined and enlightened people. They didn't worry if this king would be offended if they picked up a pitchfork and ran it through a member of the Church of England's army -Êbecause little Johnny Jr. and Rebecca Sue were on wad, powder and ball detail. And this rag-tag band of multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-race (1/4 of the troops were black) peoples of men, women and children defeated the world's strongest Christian army and established a country based on individual liberty. And when several states established constitutions based on the 10 commandments and the constitutional concentration produced a document the revolutionaries felt was too conservative, they rose up again and demanded a bill of rights to protect the liberty they had fought for. James Madison responded by drawing upon the ideals of several enlightened people and drafted the First Amendment, which guarantees individual freedom of and from religion, speech, assembly, the press, and redress of grievances by forbidding our duly elected representative from making laws respecting these rights. The Constitution with a prelude from Jefferson, a no-religious test clause (Article VI,paragraph 3) and the Bill of Rights was then ratified. The states then withdrew the 10 commandments from the Constitution and added their own Bill of Rights.

Mr. Gerard, because of liberty, you may assume as light or heavy a chain of religious responsibility as your conscious dictates. After all, it's your life - your decision. It follows that if you are to be held accountable for your decisions, then you are also the best arbitrator of life's moral situations.

Pet Food Drive

During the month of July, the AWL will be holding a food drive for the homeless pets of Kosciusko County.

The AWL (formerly "The Animal Shelter") is in need of puppy and dog food, dry and canned; kitten and cat food, dry or canned; puppy and dog treats and cat treats. you can bring donations directly to the center located in Warsaw, behind Quality Farm & Fleet or at any of these locations: Augsburgers Plus, North Webster; Bailey's Embroidery, Winona Lake; Blue Lion Coffee House, Pierceton; Big K-mart, Warsaw; Owens, Market Street; Paws & Claws, Warsaw; Town and Country Feed & Seed, Warsaw; and Video Time, Pierceton.

If you would like to host a drop-off location, please contact the AWl at 267-3008. The AWL welcomes pet food donations of any brand, however we are asking that if you purchase Heinz pet foods for your pets that you look for the "Homeless Homer or Morris" symbols on your packages, then send them or bring them to the AWL. The Heinz Company donates money and pet foods based on the amount of symbols that get sent in. You can find these symbols on these items: 9-Lives, Kibbles & Bits, Cycle, Pounce, Jerky Treats, Ken-L-Ration, Skippy and many more. AWL Needs Help

The Animal Welfare League needs everyone's help. There are animals at the shelter that need homes. If you know of anyone that doesn't have an animal, please tell them about it. Other animal shelters need help also. The animals need a place to live. Please contact the animal shelter.

It was formed to keep the animals alive and not to be destroyed. Animal Welfare League may have to go back to doing that again. I don't want that to happen again. They don't want to do that and I can't blame them. My sister and I don't want the animals destroyed. We want to see them live.

They need donations like dog and cat food, money, toys and volunteers and employees to help out.

My sister and I want to join and be a part of the AWL and help out too, but not destroy the animals. We want to see them make it.

In today's paper (6-29-99), it says that if the overcrowding gets worse, animals will be selected to be destroyed. Please don't let that happen. Please help them get them all out of there and into homes.

If you have a dog or cat, get it spayed or neutered. Don't take your pregnant cats or dogs there. They won't make it. They don't have room for them. Don't drop them along the roads. Give them to someone who can take them after they are weaned off their mothers. If we had the room, we would take the animals and give them homes.

I realize this is long but I feel it is worth it. If your animal or animals have come up missing. Go check the animal shelter. It might be out there. They try to get the animals back with their owners.

If you don't know how much adult memberships are, they are $20 a year and junior memberships are $10. Four-legged memberships are $1. Pet adoption rates are $40 for either a cat or dog.

Fashion Revue

I am writing to give the 4-H members who participated in the Kos. Co. 4-H Fashion Revue and Consumer Clothing Judging on Thursday July 1st a pat on the back. These girls worked hard and it showed. I saw many really nice outfits and these girls did a great job of modeling as well. I want to invite all the residents of Kosciusko County to come to the Kosciusko County 4-H and Community Fair and view all the different 4-H projects that our young people have worked so hard to create. You will be glad you did. Good Luck and Best Wishes to all these 4-H members and their families. See you at the fair!

I am writing to give the 4-H members who participated in the Kos. Co. 4-H Fashion Revue and Consumer Clothing Judging on Thursday July 1st a pat on the back. These girls worked hard and it showed. I saw many really nice outfits and these girls did a great job of modeling as well. I want to invite all the residents of Kosciusko County to come to the Kosciusko County 4-H and Community Fair and view all the different 4-H projects that our young people have worked so hard to create. You will be glad you did. Good Luck and Best Wishes to all these 4-H members and their families. See you at the fair!
