Saemann Building

Editor, Times-Union:
We read with great interest the Times-Union article concerning the Saemann Foundation awarding grants. We think the projects being supported by the Franklin I. and Irene List Saemann Foundation are very worthwhile projects deserving support. Their support of projects in Warsaw is especially admirable and total nearly $120,000. They also granted smaller amounts of money to Etna Green, North Webster and the Syracuse-Wawasee area.

Their support for mostly Warsaw projects is commendable. However, they own a big empty dilapidated building in downtown Mentone which simply is a disgrace to the entire Mentone community. Why doesn't the Saemann Foundation take an interest in the Mentone community? Mentone provided a home to their company for many years. Is this the way they pay us back?

Why do they not just give the building to someone who will do something with it for the good of the community? They evidently just do not care about Mentone and its citizens.

Satellite System

Editor, Times-Union:
Reference RCA Satellite System. These can be purchased almost anywhere. RCA seems to have the market. These units are manufactured by Thomson Consumer Electronics of Indianapolis.

Upon purchasing a unit and reading the warranty (page 62 of RCA Users Guide) you find the unit is warranted for "any defect in materials or workmanship." Please note, no mention of labor fees at this point. Next, under "for how long after your purchase," it breaks the warranty down, up to 90 days and 91 days up to one year. After experiencing a total dead system at less than six months, and thusly speaking with the Thomson Customer Service Supervisor, I find up to 90 days is "replace" or "refurbish" (not always new parts). After the 90 days they will provide the parts and I pay the labor. To have a receiver rebuilt through Thomson costs $75 labor, no cost for parts. As a note, I have two receivers. I told them I had to buy a new LNB, but they made no offer to replace that part or the money. Further checking, I find that Heartland Direct TV will rebuild a receiver for parts and labor at a cost of $50.

We must understand several things: 1) most products are "throw-aways" ... break it, throw it away, costs more to fix than worth; 2) if a company has a 90-day warranty, then that is about how long they expect the product to last, and; 3) after the warranty period their labor rates are calculated to be a major player in their "sales income." After checkout fees for two receivers, buying a new LNB, buying new cable to ascertain no cable break (there wasn't), paying a service call ... I had spent more than I originally paid for the dish less than six months ago.

Where does one stop? One thing leads to another. It still doesn't work (after over a week of buying, testing, paying and running around). Thomson's CS supervisor would have me pay the $150 to rebuild the receivers and see if that helps. Bet you can't guess what I told him.

Animal Welfare

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to commend Lisa Barber onÊher letter to the Editor (printed Tuesday, June 27th). Lisa's letter was very well stated and I'm thankfulÊshe is a member of Animal Welfare League. Lisa has a great passion for animals andÊI wishÊmore people shared her enthusiasmÊand drive. So, thank you Lisa for your letter. So many people areÊquick to criticize Animal Welfare League and the shelter operation. I hope some of those people read your letter andÊwill see things in a different light.Ê

Another Investigation

Editor, Times-Union:
Yippee Skippy! Another stupid investigation. ... I think I'm gonna puke. I've seen so many of them that I've lost interest in whatever they might be about and started paying more attention to whatever they might be trying to divert our attention away from. They would have us believe that because of the election, they are too busy fund-raising to get much done ... yet here they are again - the same as last week -Êgathered around the television cameras, holding another stupid hearing, calling for another stupid investigation! Ever wonder who is dictating the legislsation? Ever wonder why these people have so much time on their hands to be playing politics for four whole years, holding hearing after hearing, investigating everyone to hell and back for everything under the sun? It's the special interests, STUPID!

No Defense For Bush

Editor, Times-Union:
To the woman in Burket, defending George W. Bush: You are the one who is misinformed, George W. Bush stated along time ago that he is for capital punishment, along with Al Gore, they are both for murdering people. George W. Bush said he is tough on crime. You can be tough on crime without killing people. Lock them up forever, no chance of parole. What I'm saying along with many other people, George W. Bush has stood by and done nothing to stop all the killing of people in Texas, which has killed more people than in any other state. As governor of the state of Texas, he has the power to stop the killing or keep killing. As far as him just following the laws of the state, you are right, he is defending man's laws, not God's laws. As far as the high gasoline prices, the government, and I mean all the government, anyone connected to the government, stood by and watched the prices go through the roof, and did nothing about it. Hopfully this will show up at election time. Maybe they will get rid of all of them. Have a nice day.

Acronymomania

Editor, Times-Union:
After reading Gary Gerard's editorials, I find that those of us who fought the rezoning are suffering from such maladies as NIMBY and ACAC. I think Mr. Gerard suffers from MEIJER (Major Exaggerations In Journalistic Editorial Reporting), which stems from FLIER (Financial Losses In Extra Revenue).

More Traffic Patrols

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to second the opion of C.R. Stiver in the Wednesday Times-Union. Put the Warsaw and the State Police to work. It is their job to ticket offenders. The more the merrier. Add up the dollars, control the intersection. Fix the problem. Yeah!

Thanks To Post Office

Editor, Times-Union:
Recently the Warsaw Post Office sent a letter to the Editor expressing their gratitude toward the many people who participated in the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive in May. As a co-sponsor of the food drive, United Way of Kosciusko County would also like to extend their thanks to the community for their efforts. Because you care for your community, you helped bring in seven tons of food that was divided up between Combined Community Services, Our Father's House and Salvation Army. That food will provide several months' supply for each agency.

United Way would also like to take the time to thank our local post office and all the letter carriers who were involved. It takes special people to take on the responsibilities of such an amazing effort. United Way salutes you and the community for "Doing Good Work" for Kosciusko County.

Thanks To Caregivers

Editor, Times-Union:
On June 18 of this year we had to take my Dad (Robert E. Konkle) from Masons Health Care to the KCH emergency room. He was transported by EMS. I would like to take this time to say thank you to the EMS personnel, the emergency room staff, doctors and nurses, my biggest heartfelt thanks goes out to the ICU unit of KCH, from the time they received my Dad till his passing on June 25. Each and every one made my Dad's last days very meaningful and comfortable. When the end was near and we knew there was nothing else to be done, KCH moved Dad up to the fourth floor into a private room where his family could be with him in the end. At the end Dad passed away in his sleep with no pain. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you KCH, emergency room, ICU, the staff on the fourth floor and Randy Packer, KCH chaplain.
