Legion Parade
Editor, Times-Union:A "General Clarification"
I am writing in response to Mr. Allen D. Regenos' editorial regarding the Pierceton American Legion Post 258 entry "The General" in this year's Silver Lake Days parade. The "General" has long been a part of the tradition of the Silver Lake Days parade and I hope that tradition continues. They have many dedicated individuals who take their unit to numerous area parades, which is indeed a "crowd pleaser."
Let me see if I can set the record straight on the situation which occurred in Silver Lake.
First and foremost, our parade entry form clearly states to check only one category for parade judging and/or participation. The entry received for The General was marked as "Color Guard" and "Service Club."
Mr. Regenos stated the person who created the "line-up list" didn't know that the American Legion was a service organization. Further research proves the category they were placed in is indeed the very category requested on the form. The General is not a color guard.
He stated he didn't know why "they" were entry number 106 in the parade if they sent their form in on June 1. Units are numbered and placed by category, not the date entry forms are received. The lineup numbers for the service organizations was 101-110.
Lastly, Mr. Regenos stated he hoped next year "they" will have someone in charge with some "general knowledge" of setting up a parade. I believe the 26 years I have assisted with this task speaks for itself.

No Etna Green Events
Editor, Times-Union:For the past 29 years activities have been held in Etna Green to celebrate July 4.
Due to recent phone calls and questions, apparently some of you missed earlier notices stating there will be no townwide garage sales or a car show on June 29 or any activities on July 4 this year.
The July 4 events and parade committee is unaware of how some local publications obtained the information they printed stating activities this year.
Manpower to work events is quite low, and with several individuals in 4-H, home economics clubs and our local Lions Club having a food stand at the Kosciusko County Fair the week of July 1-6 that requires help from other organizations and the community, we didn't see it feasible to undertake events in Etna Green.
Recently a Founders Day committee was selected to begin making plans for a celebration next summer when Etna Green will observe a 150th anniversary.
I hope this clears up the confusion.
