Editor, Times-Union:
To Ann Sweet:
Thanks, Ann. I think you answered most concerns. I still have doubts about the technology but then I'm still trying to adjust to double action.

Tell Heidi I said hello.

To Bill Hartman:
I would have to check with my old friend Matt, but I think we would say my question was theoretical. I don't really need to worry about it. My kids are all grown and have their own cars.

Wants Mo-ped Back

Editor, Times-Union:
On June 20, my mo-ped was stolen during the mid to late afternoon hours. It was sitting at Wal-Mart at the north doors. I would like to tell this person or persons, "Shame on you." You have seven days from publication of this letter to return it to where it was parked in good condition, no questions asked.

God Not A Politician

Editor, Times-Union:
An interesting event occurred last month that seems to have escaped the mainline news. It occurred at a small evangelical Christian college in Grand Rapids, Mich., called Calvin College. Here is what reportedly happened.

Apparently Karl Rove, in seeking a friendly place for President Bush to speak, offered him as the commencement speaker at Calvin. The problem was Calvin had already invited someone else to speak who was then disinvited so that the president could speak.

What happened next was probably most unexpected by the president's team. One-third of Calvin's faculty and staff submitted and ran an open letter in the Grand Rapids Press the day of the president's speech. Here is part of what they said:

[W]e seek an open and honest dialogue about the Christian faith and how it is best expressed in the political sphere ... [W]e see conflicts between our understanding of what Christians are called to do and many of the policies of your administration. [The administration] has launched an unjust and unjustified war in Iraq, taken actions that favor the wealthy of our society and burden the poor, harmed creation and [has] not promoted long-term stewardship of our natural environment, [and] fostered intolerance and divisiveness and has often failed to listen to those with whom it disagrees. Our passion for these matters arises out of the Christian faith that we share with you. We ask you, Mr. President, to re-examine your policies in light of our God-given duty to pursue justice with mercy ....

One faculty member told a reporter: We are not Lynchburg. We are not right wing; we're not left wing. We think our faith trumps political ideology.

One-fourth of the Calvin graduates wore a button that said: God is not a Republican or a Democrat.

As a commentary upon what the faculty, staff, and students did last month at Calvin I have one word: Amen.

Chapman Fireworks

Editor, Times-Union:
Do any of you enjoy the fireworks at Chapman Lake? I do. I feel they are some of the best around the county. I've lived at Chapman Lake for 14 years and am also a member of the Chapman Lake Conservation Association.

For years I have contributed to the CLCA and the fireworks fund. Last year, the fund was supplemented by other means than the fund itself. This year, we are woefully short on funds again. As I understand it from different members, the show may have to be shortened because of the lack of funds. This may also result in the cancelation of next year's celebration. The dollar amount of $8,000 is not unattainable. If every member would donate $20 every year with their dues, we'd have enough to hold the fireworks.

At the June 18 fish fry, people were donating money even though they knew they wouldn't be at the lake for the celebration. I don't understand why an association of 300+ can't raise the money for something everyone at the lake enjoys so much.

On July 2, the CLCA will be holding a pancake breakfast at the conservation club. Everyone who attends will have an opportunity to donate at that time. If you truly enjoy the fireworks, please drop your change in the jar.

Smoking At Little League

Editor, Times-Union:
As a parent I want the best for my children and I, like other parents, work hard to do my best to provide what I can. I realize that no child is perfect and that in the end they are accountable for their actions. What disturbs me though is when adults fail to step up and let their children know that certain behaviors are unacceptable.

Warsaw Little League is overall a fantastic place for children to go to participate in sports or to watch and associate with friends. There are children of all ages present at the ball park and the younger children typically look up to the older boys. Fifteen- and 16-year-old boys have been observed standing in the park in their uniforms smoking and they have been seen smoking regularly in the park behind the dugouts inbetween innings of their game. Seeing this saddens me as these children do not understand what the long term affects smoking will have on their bodies and the impact that they are having on other children who look up to them.

Warsaw Little League - please try to find some way to help these teens be good role models for the younger generations!
