Editor, Times-Union:
Once again, I read a column in your paper, and liked it very much. I quickly looked to see who had written such an entertaining and enlightening piece. Once again, no author's name appeared. "Scripps Howard," it says. Scripps Howard is a news service, not a writer. They syndicate the writing of others, and distribute it.

I dare say none of the writers at your establishment would like it much if their work were to go unrewarded. If you think enough of a writer's work to use it in your newspaper, be kind enough - and professional enough - to acknowledge who wrote it. Surely, you can add the writer's name to that line either before or after "Scripps Howard," and not take up valuable space with such paltry concerns.

Fair Bingo

Editor, Times-Union:
The Warsaw Moose Lodge #1423 has owned and operated the Bingo Stand at the Kosciusko County 4-H Fair for 40+ years. Because of the taxes, insurance, building maintenance on the bingo stand, rent charged for the week by the Fair Board, 13 weekly passes we buy, time spent by some of our members to buy the merchandise (95 percent locally) and time donated by the 20+ members to run the Bingo Stand all week, the past few years the Board of Officers and members who have attended our past meetings discussed if it was worth the $2,500 that we made on the stand to keep operating it. Each year in the past it was decided that we would continue to own and operate the Bingo Stand fair week. This decision was made due to the enjoyment the community receives (especially our senior citizens), the 70 percent of the money made from the stand was donated back into the community, and our involvement in donating to the 4-H Fair auction. However, due to the Fair Board increasing our rent from $700 to $1,500, we regretfully inform the community that we have sold the Bingo Stand to the Fair Board. We would like to thank each of you that has supported the Bingo Stand for the last 40+ years.

Glen Robinson, Bingo chairman Warsaw Moose Lodge #1423

Gun Study

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing in response to the so-called gun study by Al Gore in the Monday paper. Al must be doing his gun study at the same place the Clinton administration and the media do their polls, in their own little offices across the country. It looks to me like Al Gore has taken his cue and learned well from his buddy Bill Clinton. Politicians like them think that if they tell a lie long enough that people will take it as truth. A lie is still a lie no matter how many times you tell it! Al Gore says, "People age 18 through 20 commit 24 percent of all gun murders." He goes on to say that "incredibly, while those 18- to 20- year-olds cannot legally buy beer, cannot purchase a bottle of wine, they can walk into any gun shop, pawn shop or gun show in America and buy a handgun." Well, having held a Federal Firearms License myself in the past, I am here to tell you that is a flat-out lie, something the Clinton administration and Al Gore do best. You cannot legally buy a handgun in this country without first being 21 years of age. Here in Indiana you cannot even sell ammunition to anyone under the age of 21 if it is for a handgun.

There are literally thousands of gun laws on the books that these brain dead politicians like Bill Clinton and Al Gore keep passing so they can feel good about doing something. The laws that have already been passed are more than enough to put violent people behind bars where they belong. The laws are simply not enforced and when police try to enforce them a weak judicial system and lawyers who are not concerned with justice let them back out. How many people who commit these crimes have rap sheets as long as your leg and still get out of jail with no real consequences? These people know it, so they continue until they finally kill someone. And who do you blame? Why the gun of course!

I have never in my life seen such an all out and obvious attack on our Bill of Rights. The Clinton Administration has tried to destroy just about every one of them in the name of more security. My friends, one of our forefathers said it best, "If you are willing to give up essential freedom for temporary security then you deserve neither freedom nor security." The Second Amendment, the right to keep and bear arms, is the one freedom that protects the rest. We have the most free country in the world but to keep it free means we each have a huge responsibility to do our part to keep it free. Every year we celebrate Memorial Day to show respect for those who have fought to keep us free. It is a slap in the face to all who have fought or have fought and died for our freedom only to have us lose it because we cannot be responsible enough to handle our own freedom. Once the Second Amendment is destroyed by lying politicians like Al Gore and his buddy Bill Clinton it won't be long before the rest are gone too. Do we want another person in the White House who can't tell the truth? I sincerely hope not!

Great Kids

Editor, Times-Union:
We recently had approximately 450 Kosciusko County students and teachers here to tour the Old Jail Museum and Genealogy Research Library. There were third and fifth graders from Madison Elementary; seventh graders from Lakeview Middle School; and Leesburg, Lincoln and Harrison Elementary fourth graders.

Believe me when I say that these boys and girls were really great. Not only were they attentive, observant and polite, but when they returned to school they wrote some truly outstanding "thank you" notes and pictures of what they had seen here.

So much credit must go to the teachers and parents of these students, who are obviously teaching them the value of understanding and appreciating the past. It was a joy to have these special people visit the Old Jail Museum.

Silver Lake Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
On behalf of the entire Silver Lake Days Festival Committee, I would like to thank all those who attended and participated in Silver Lake Days 1999. In particular, thanks to our wonderful merchants. Without their monetary support, donations of time and materials, there would be no festival. In addition, thanks to the local and area police, fire and EMS departments for their help. Thanks to the area radio stations and newspapers for their coverage. Last, but certainly not least, many thanks to the festival committee itself ... you were the ones who truly made it happen!
