Ozzfest Disappointment

Editor, Times-Union:
I just read the article "Ozzfest Brings Variety Of Metal Acts To The Masses" by David Slone and I would have to say that I am very disappointed. I myself attended Ozzfest for the first time and I was very impressed and so were the people I went with. We arrived at Deer Creek at 10:45 a.m., when the entire show was to start. The people you sent, David Slone and Jen Gibson, did not arrive until 4 p.m. They had missed all of the second and third stage shows, which included a popular upcoming heavy metal band, "Mudvane." I really don't think they got the full effect of what Ozzfest is supposed to be about - a full day of hard rock and heavy metal. And not only did they not arrive early, but they only stayed for four songs of "Black Sabbath," and they and Ozzy Osbourne were the starring band.

I really don't think that sending people who don't know or care much about heavy metal are the type of people to send to a heavy metal concert. They referred to "Linkin' Park" as the worst act there, but they are a very popular, upcoming band. Everyone that I have talked to has agreed that "Linkin' Park" was one of the best bands there. They captivated the audience for as long as they were up on stage, as did "Slipnot," another band that was supposed to be a bad show. They may use freaky costumes and pyrotechnics, but that just made their show unique. I'm not a "Slipnot" fan myself, but I had to admit that they put on a good show. Besides, Marilyn Manson used quite a few costumes and props and your reporter thought that he was a good show, even despite his "offensive" lyrics.

Staying for only four songs of "Black Sabbath" and calling their show bad isn't very good judgment either. They played until almost 11:15, 15 minutes after schedule. It's not that Ozzy didn't know the lyrics, he even played a new song, but having the audience sing along or just sing part of the song is performing. Marilyn Manson, a good show, did the same thing during a couple songs. Lots of bands also had props, the water hoses and buckets were Ozzy's props, plus the audience loved it. "Black Sabbath" put on one of the best shows there, I don't know what David Slone was talking about.

I'm not sure what David and Jen expected when they headed off to Ozzfest, but I don't know of anyone that thought it was a "family show" and heavy metal in itself is "not for the weak or easily offended." They should also get the full effect. You can't watch half of a movie and be a critic; you have to watch the whole thing and be into that type of movie; it's the same with music. I think that someone who knows about the popular and upcoming bands and may even like a little heavy metal would have been better suited to give a complete and good report.

Bad Ozzfest Review

Editor, Times-Union:
I was so fortunate to see the review David Slone wrote about Ozzfest. Didn't he know what time the concert started? It is obvious that he has not been to very many concerts. The Ozzfest is huge, unlike people who read his tainted concert review, which is few and far. I have seen Ozzy and Black Sabbath more than he has and for him to say he gave a weak performance is so biased! What does he know about Ozzy's legend? Don't judge a man because of his faults or age. Ozzy has been a great legend of rock 'n' roll and will live on as such.

Maybe he should be the one to organize Hip Hop Fest and see what an expert he is! Do you think his venue will sell out? Need help? Call 800-ASK-OZZY.

Tattoos Are Tattoos

Editor, Times-Union:
Referring to the process as cosmetic correction or enhancement of natural features does not change the fact that a tattoo is a tattoo. Waunita Young didn't realize that she needed a special exception? Why didn't she check the city ordinance before she started offering this service? Quoting Ms. Young, "Not being able to offer this would hurt us." What about the local tattoo artists that cannot open their businesses in this city? Does anyone think about what hurts them? Do the people at Think Young cover body scars? I know a tattoo artist who does, and in my opinion this could also be called cosmetic correction.

Councilwoman Brown was right-on by saying "you can argue what cosmetic enhancement is." Just like art, this definition is subjective to individual interpretation. To some, it is having eyeliner tattooed to the eyelids, to others it is having a beautiful work of art tattooed to any part of the body.

Warsaw is a growing city. If continued growth is desired, there will be new businesses come in that everyone doesn't agree with. (I personally don't agree with a topless massage parlor, but it is allowed inside city limits. The point is that everyone doesn't have to agree with it!) Why should local residents have to go out of town to get a tattoo? It seems to me that if Warsaw had at least one tattoo parlor, that would bring more people into our city who would quite possibly shop at other stores and help the local economy. Take off the blinders, Warsaw, and step into the 21st century! Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, and will be around for thousands more.

Tattoos Defined

Editor, Times-Union:
To all those people who helped determine that "cosmetic enhancement" and "tattooing" are not the same. According to the Collegiate Dictionary:

Main entry: 3tattoo
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Tahitian tatau, noun, tattoo

Date: 1769
1: to mark or color (the skin) with tattoos

2: to mark the skin with (a tattoo)

Main entry: 4tattoo
Function: noun
Inflected form(s): plural tattoos

Date: 1777
1: the act of tattooing : the fact of being tattooed

2: an indelible mark or figure fixed upon the body by insertion of pigment under the skin or by production of scars.

The introduction of ink under the skin using needles is tattooing! Period, end of story. This distinction is ridiculous. The owner of the salon stated she is "not for tattoo parlors up and down the street" Why? We tattoo artists have children, shop in your stores, eat in your restaurants, I have even had my nails done at Think Young. We work in your factories and shops. What we do not do is own a tattoo parlor in Warsaw because our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness has been "zoned" into areas where there are no buildings, no landlords willing to rent to us, or too close to the things in the community that we to use and support, like churches, parks, day cares and schools. None of us have a problem with the BZA allowing the special exception for Think Young to do cosmetic tattooing. Lucky for them they fit into the proper zoning. We do have a problem with people continuing to discriminate against us, the tattoo artists, the tattooed people and tattoo parlors. We are tired of being seen as undesirables in your community. If we had been born with color you would not dare to treat us this way. A rose by any other name ... A tattoo is a tattoo and discrimination is still discrimination no matter what you call it or how legal you make it.
