Pacesetter Choice
Editor, Times-Union:In response to Grace Inman's 6/16/04 "Pacesetter Choice Criticized."
The United Way should not be ashamed to partner with Nelson Beverage as a pacesetter for their campaign. First of all, Nelson Beverage, while supplying alcohol to our community, doesn't do it while holding a gun to someone's head. Last time I checked, it was a personal choice an adult of legal age made for themselves. So, the statement "those who promote and sell alcoholic beverages contribute mightily to social ills and health issues that cost individuals millions of dollars annually, not to mention the personal heartache and pain they inflict" doesn't really ring true. That would give every alcoholic on the planet an excuse for their own actions. They could just say that Nelson Beverage gave it to them so it's not their fault they drink so much. Which we all know is pretty ridiculous. It boils down to people making personal choices, and short of prohibition (which didn't work either) alcohol will always exist in our society. So let me revise your statement: "Individuals who drink alcoholic beverages irresponsibly and in excess contribute mightily to social ills and to their own and families' personal pain and heartache." Don't place blame on a distributor when it's up to the individual to buy it in the first place. I commend Nelson Beverage for wanting to give back to the community. I hope that the United Way and Nelson Beverage meet their goal!

Poppy Days
Editor, Times-Union:The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49 "Poppy Days" was a huge success. Thanks to the generosity of Warsaw community and businesses, we raised more than $1,200 in donations this year. Thanks to all who donated. Also thanks to all the volunteers who helped in this endeavor. The donations will be used for veterans and their families through the various projects we have undertaken.
Also the program at WCHS was super. We are all proud of these World War II veterans and all the veterans who fought in other wars and conflicts. Also the men and women who are currently serving in our Armed Forces, we are very proud of you. Most importantly, we are proud of all the veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice. May we never forget them.

Editor, Times-Union:I would like to thank all of the sponsors and others for the World War II program and recognition shown the veterans on May 29. This was a great undertaking, requiring a lot of hard work. I regret that I could not be there as I was in Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after having a heart attack. I am home now and feeling better. I did receive my Service to America certificate and am very proud of it.

P.S. I think we should back our young men and women in the Armed Forces wherever they are with our prayers. They are doing whatever it takes to get the job done. We hope they can return home soon.
Key To Happiness
Editor, Times-Union:In the world today, people spend thousands of dollars searching for the secret of a satisfying life, yet never find it. I have a friend who has found it, by setting her whole being on things above. In spite of seemingly unsurmountable odds she has found the key! In her own words: "When the prospect of heaven is foremost in our mind each day, we live differently. We don't focus on what we're missing in this life but on what is awaiting us in the next. The assurance of heaven as our final destination gives us perspective. When our mind and heart are set on heaven, we're not devastated by disappointments in this world."
My friend lives in North Webster. You'll remember her smile. Her name is Emily Thomas. She's done her math: Christ+nothing=Everything!
