Politicians
Editor, Times-Union:Some of the Democrats and Republicans must be real proud of the mess that they have made. Since some of them say that if you are not one of them you should not have the right to run for office. Many of them that have not said it must believe it, since they do not think that petitions should be signed to get independents on the ballot. Are you afraid that someone more capable might get elected?
You should be proud. You have given us some of the best politicians that money can buy. And some of them have already been bought, but not by you.
We have welfare people that have all their rent and utilities paid, are getting food stamps and Medicaid. Yet some of these people are able to spend $50 or more a week on bingo or the lottery.
Then there is the corporate welfare.
Look at all of the bank mergers. Some of these banks are not even headquartered in the USA.
Look at manufacturing. Much of this is now foreign owned. It is hard to find any clothes or electronic equipment made in the USA.
Do you own these factories or the stock? Have you lost your job?
We have foreigners working in this country on temporary visas. Are we too dumb to train our own people? Is some of this work so menial that it is below even our welfare people?
Who allowed this?
They say that we have a good economy. These figures are taken from the unemployment rolls. If you don't draw, you are not a statistic, and don't count. We can find plenty that are not drawing unemployment or have given up on the system.

Tobacco
Editor, Times-Union:Thank you Gary Gerard. It's time someone told it like it is about "who" is at fault on smoking.
I agree it can cause all kind of problems. But no one was standing over you forcing those cigarettes in your mouth. You did it on your own free will.
Put blame where blame belongs, that is "not on the tobacco companies." They just put the product there. They didn't make you buy it.
A former smoker. No one forced me.

Abortion Policy
Editor, Times-Union:In history's most egregious campaign of cultural imperialism, the current administration has been jamming abortion down the throats of Third World nations in your name and mine. Arrogantly insisting this horrible wrong is a right, in spite of deep division within our own country, these culture assassins have undermined the life-affirming values of other peoples. If another power had attempted a similar assault on American values it would have been denounced as intolerable interference in domestic matters, if not as an act of war.
This administration feigns respect for United Nations authority while it violates U.N. covenants. The U.N. Declaration of the Rights of the Child states "the child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth." The U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines genocide as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethical, racial or religious group" to include "Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group." The U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) makes no mention of any right to abortion but prohibits discrimination on grounds of pregnancy or maternity. And the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law," contrary to Roe v. Wade.
Congress has finally had enough of the administration's obscene policies and has attached measures to cut off funding for abortion promotion to bills the White House strongly favors. But this administration, while giving lip service to concern for children, has no higher priority than destroying prenatal children both at home and abroad.
Incredibly, the American people still support the Disgrace in the White House in spite of his crimes against humanity. Like Hitler's little puppy dogs they will wag their tails and yap happily so long as Master seems to keep them fed and watered, regardless of what he does out of sight.
Invisible people are the easiest to kill, especially when those who could stop the carnage choose not to see it. Human rights abuses in other nations are mere specks in our brother's eye so long as we cannot see clearly with the beam of abortion in our own. What passes for leadership has forfeited our nation's moral authority.

Father's Day
Editor, Times-Union:Another Father's Day is here again...and again...here I am without my father. Today as I was driving to work the hardware store had a sign up that said, "Remember Dad on Father's Day." I can't help but remember my Dad, Junior G. Goon, every day, but especially on Father's Day. I really miss looking for that perfect gift and the card that says it all, that I know he'll enjoy and appreciate. Most of all there are three things I miss so much that it makes my heart ache and chokes me with tears when they come to mind. That big ole' smile when he would read the card I picked out "just for him," the feeling of love in that big ole' comfy hug he would give me as he choked back his tears of love and appreciation for my thoughtfulness and the most loving and sincere "I love you, Sally Ann" that I so needed and loved to hear. My dad, Junior Goon, was the most wonderful father a girl could have! So, Dad, I hope that somehow you know how much I miss you, my life has never been the same since God needed you and took you from us. In fact, at times, I get a little angry because I still needed you too. And, oh, how I wish I was one of the lucky ones who still have their father to get that big ole' "Dad hug" from on his special day. If you still have your dad, give him an extra long and loving hug and take a moment to realize just how very lucky you are. Because if this happens to be your last Father's Day you get to spend with him, I'm here to tell you that you will never forget that day together, it stays strong in your heart forever. And you try your hardest to hear that "I love you" just one more time...but it isn't there and never will be again...only in your memory and always in your heart.

Fine Fish Fry
Editor, Times-Union:In May I attended the annual 4-H fish fry at the fair grounds. As usual the food was good and it was fun to visit with so many other people. However, there was something different this year. As we were eating, the people sitting near me and I noticed that the table service and table covers were provided by community companies. It is great to so easily observe which companies and individuals help the 4-H program with this important fund-raising event. I thank all the businesses that provided essential materials, such as napkins, plastic eating utensils, plates and cups, table covers, use of the refrigerated truck, aprons and dish towels and sugar-free powdered drink.
