- Shame! Shame! - School Closings - Tax Impact
Shame! Shame!
Editor, Times-Union:Like Gomer Pyle used to say, "Shame! Shame! Shame!" And to you who dumped a six foot metal ring at the Silver Lake Recycling Center, shame shame, shame. It was standing up before where we put our recyclables and had fresh, wet manure from the barn yard.
I am a resident of Silver Lake and appreciate that service. Perhaps it would be a good gesture to come some night after dark and take it back to the farm - like after dark when you left it.
It's incidents like that causes disgrace to all.
I just hope you reconsider your decision and show some respect to all and remove it.

School Closings
Editor, Times-Union:I think it needs to be brought to the attention of all the parents of Warsaw Community Schools that the closing of any of the elementary schools will affect them too. If they close the Claypool and Silver Lake schools and move them north, it is likely that they will end up at Washington and Eisenhower, and Washington and Eisenhower students will probably be moved to the new Jefferson. It is hard to tell where your children will go after the redistricting. This is something that we all need to be aware of. We all need to be at the meeting on Monday at Washington Elementary gym.
I also see nothing wrong with putting sixth grade in the middle school. Being a parent of a seventh grade athlete this year, our athletes are behind the majority of the schools we compete against because they have the sixth grade in their middle schools. I believe all the schools in our conference have the sixth grade in their middle schools; we are the only ones that I could tell that don't. And you can tell the difference by watching them in the events that are not done in elementary.
Also something that is very disturbing is that the property being considered for the new school in Winona Lake used to be a dump site, with chemicals possible being dumped there. Is this someplace that we want any of our children playing?
I would like to also address the addition to the new football stadium and track at the high school. It is a great idea, but we also need to do something to update the football and track area at Edgewood Middle School. It is very unfair for them to not have the same quality of athletic equipment as Lakeview. The track and football area have been there for over 25 years. The track has only been resurfaced once in those 25 years that anyone knows of; there are big cracks in it, and the long jump pit lane is concave. The football field is in terrible shape, and there is very little seating, although they did put in new bleachers this year. Please, school board, update and resurface this area at the same time that you are doing the new football stadium at the high school. Give both of our middle schools the same quality of equipment. Otherwise Edgewood athletes and students are being cheated.

The Libertarian Party of Kosciusko County, being aware of the passion of others for the cause of red light cameras, would like to suggest an alternative that may satisfy all concerned. In our quest for limited government we see the camera as one more step in the direction of government invasion of our lives. We are as concerned about the loss of lives as anyone else. Personally, my mother was killed in an automobile accident at the age of 47. Also, we do not believe the camera will save lives. Here is our suggestion. Paint a conspicuous line across the highway at a point where, traveling at the speed limit, you will have to stop if the light turns yellow before you reach the line. Police participation will still be required, but after all, this is why the State Police was organized. One last point. It's your butt. No one cares more about it than you. Drive defensively!

Tax Impact
Editor, Times-Union:Do you realize that if you live in Kosciusko County, whether your school district is Warsaw, Triton, Wawasee, Tippeyvalley, Whitko, or if you own a business in Kosciusko County your taxes may be affected by the Warsaw Community school boards decision at the next meeting?
I personally want them to wait until after this falls tax assessment before they make any decisions. Everyone in Kosciusko County needs to get involved.
It does not matter if you do not have kids in school or if your kids do not go to Warsaw Community schools. If you are in Kosciusko County, you pay taxes in Kosciusko County. Therefore Warsaw Community School board is effecting your tax dollars.
Every tax payer in Kosciusko County has the right to stand up and be heard. I also feel that before the Warsaw Community School board makes a decision they should have a public pole for Kosciusko County.
To see what the tax payers of Kosciusko County want. It is not right for a handful of board members to make a decision that will effect a whole County. Without knowing what that County wants.
Warsaw already has a 30 million bond out for improvements. Do you want another 30 to 31 million debt added to this?
If you are a taxpayer whether it is residential or business in Kosciusko County then you should show up and be heard on Monday June 16,2003 7:00 p.m. at Washington Elementary.
