Missing Monkey Editor, Times-Union:
Between the hours of 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday night to early Monday morning, someone or someones helped themselves to our VBS monkey at Bethel Baptist Church on Pierceton Road outside of Pierceton. I realize this is probably a senior prank or something to that effect, but the fun is over. Please be so kind as to return the monkey to Bethel. Each year we put on an extraordinary VBS at Bethel to reach the kids of the community. They in turn have their picture taken with what ever character/theme is for that year. This year the children would've had their picture taken with the 5-foot monkey. Now that VBS is upon us (it starts this coming Monday) we cannot obtain another Monkey in such a short time. The cost of the Monkey was only $9.95, through Oriental Trading. What I am asking is this - please return the Monkey for VBS, then I will put it out on the lawn where it was, and you can nab it again, we only need it for next week for the children. After that you can have it if you want it.
I was young once, too. I know it must've seemed hilarious to you teens or whoever you are that took the monkey, just driving around with it hanging out of you car. I had fun (even though I'm a grandma) bringing to the church. My Pastor said it was so cute, that someone would probably nab him. He suggested on putting him on the steeple of the church, but in all the years I've been a member at Bethel, we had never had anyone take our props from VBS. Besides, if he was hanging onto the steeple he would look like King Kong, not a monkey! I hope you see it in your heart or hearts to return the monkey.
Thank you.

!end McGuire Evaluation Editor, Times-Union:
I had an opportunity to view the evaluation that the school board and administrators did on Dr. McGuire.
I was appalled at the difference between their evaluations. The administrators gave him high marks while certain board members gave him very low marks. I would agree more with the administrators evaluation than that of the board. It is obvious that certain members of the school board are on a "witch hunt" and want to get rid of him.
When Dr. McGuire was assistant superintendent, he was charged with the curriculum. He made changes that would benefit the students and as a result, the ISTEP scores improved as well as other programs. He has kept the Warsaw School System within budget, unlike other school systems that have had to lay off teachers and cut programs in order to meet their budget.
Dr. McGuire has done a very good job since he took over as superintendent. Some people will disagree, which is natural, but if you look at the standing ovation he got at the last board meeting, it is evident he has a lot of support from school patrons.
Board members, you need to look at the overall school situation and then talk to administrators if you want to find out what kind of job Dr. McGuire is doing. They are closer to the situation than you are.

!end Flag Etiquette Editor, Times-Union:
I am visiting relatives at Chapman Lake and would like to mention something that I find quite disturbing regarding the American flag. There is a trailer located at the 3-way stop at Chapman Lake Drive and Stoneburner Road that is displaying (if it can be called that) an American flag that is not only very faded and tattered but is also drooping down until it touches the ground. This flag is strung across the front of the trailer for everyone to see.
It would be much more preferable to see no flag at all as to see one displayed in this disrespectful manner. My father fought in World War II, my brother in the Korean War, and my brother-in-law and several friends fought in the Vietnam War. The American flag is very precious and dear to all of them and they risked their lives defending it and all it represents. It upsets my father immensely to drive by this flag on a daily basis and see it disrespected in such a manner. I'm sure there are probably other people displaying a flag that should be replaced by a new one, but this is the one we see daily.
In the state I live in, Florida, it is against the law to fly a tattered and torn flag and the person doing so would be cited and fined for doing this. In my opinion, this should be the case in every state, city and county through our great nation.
Please, people, if this letter steps on your toes, think about how you would feel if someone in another country displayed our flag in such a manner and either replace your flag with one that honors it or, if you cannot afford to do that, at least take down the one that is a disgrace to the great United States of America and all that it represents.
An American who is proud of our flag and this country.

I would like to thank the highway department for the moon craters on the side of the road across from Penguin Point on North Lake Street. They only cost me a new tire and rim while trying to avoid someone who suddenly decided to turn. These giant holes have been there for quite some time and have not been attended to. Is there a reason? How many cars have had to have their front ends realigned because of them? What do we pay taxes for? Some attention to these holes would be appreciated.

I've known Gene May for many years, at one point we called each other friend, there has been no separation other than time. "Gene, I hope and pray you and yours are well."
Now, to the issue at hand. I can ignore most of your rantings Gene. We all listen to the drummer we like to hear. I do that, too. But I must take exception to the statement you made about "Most Americans don't want to take over the world economically and militarily", a direct quote. Gene, I hope I did it correctly. For those that don't understand this quote, it's in the Times-Union of June 7, opinion page. I'd hate to be a letter off and didn't quote the whole sentence.
Gene, I know you quote fabulous sources for your opinions, I'm sure you study each and every detail. I also know that one can study only what leans in their direction. For that reason I challenge you - let's do a real study, not some liberal poll.
The question that should be asked of respondents should be with good education first. "The world will be dominated by someone, there will be a dominating force, do you want that force to be the U.S.?"
Best question: There are alternatives as the world system is playing out we have three. China ... China will be soon able to dominate both militarily and economically, Wal-Mart will make sure of that. The EU, the European Union may form an alliance with Russia and then could be both a military and economic power. The U.S. ... We are the only reasonable option, other than "pie in the sky" wishes of some kind of Utopia.
Now, let's not poll urban liberals and ask only, "Do you want the U.S. to be a dominating force economically and militarily?" Let's ask real people and offer the real options.
Love Ya, Gene ... always have!

I wanted to say I think we need to set a date for the Iraqi people to start managing their own country. I think WSBT anchor Mike Collins mentioned this a while back. I agree with him on this statement and I think some of your readers may agree, too. We need to start gradually dispatching our troops back to the USA at the completion of their work.

Picture this ... On June 4, we are preparing for 23 relatives to arrive for my father's 81st birthday party.ÊWe live on a peninsula with only three homes at the west end of Irish Lake.ÊOur parking is limited, but the two neighbors east of my property said we could park the overflow at their homes.
Thirty minutes before the guests were to arrive, two North Webster fire trucks pull down our drive and start reeling hoses into the water.ÊWe inquired as to what kind of emergency was blocking the parking and we were told it was a practice maneuver.ÊSince the North Webster area is surrounded by waterfront, we asked if the practice session could be moved.ÊNo, they explained, it could not.
The fire truck in the rear was staying long enough to fill the tanker, disappearing for a short time and then returning.ÊI asked my neighbor to follow the truck.ÊWe discovered the truck was delivering lake water to an above-the-ground pool on McKenna Road. It took four trips and I imagine the tax payers supply the gasoline for these trucks.ÊOne of the firemen's wives pulled into our personal cemented parking area twice to drop off and pick up her son.ÊI have learned the name of the owner of the personal car.ÊI have questions.ÊWho owns the pool? (Are they relatives?) Why can they block our private cemented parking area without our permission?ÊWhy are they using our private cemented parking area as a public turn-around?ÊWhy are they removing lake water when our water levels are low?ÊWhy are we using North Webster owned vehicles for this purpose?Ê Why didn't they leave when we told them they were causing us problems? Why don't people who want the convenience of lake front property call a realtor? There is a lot of it for sale.
