Blood Drive
Editor, Times-Union:I am delighted to announce that our Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross will host a blood drive during the month of June. The current supply across the nation is between two to three days for type O+ blood, and I want to encourage eligible donors to participate and donate blood in June. Up to three blood products can be manufactured from one unit of blood, so by donating blood you can help several individuals in need of a very specific blood product.
A blood drive is scheduled at Center Lake Pavilion Tuesday from 12:30 to 6 p.m.
I wish to recognize some very "special" blood donors, and these include our area high school students who have been extremely generous by stepping forward this year and donating blood. The students at Wawasee Community High School, Warsaw Community High School, and Tippecanoe Valley High School have all demonstrated great commitment and responsibility in supporting our Red Cross Blood Program, not only this year, but for many years! On behalf of our chapter and board of directors, I wish to recognize the students and staff at each high school because, together, they do an outstanding job and set the example for all of us in highlighting the importance of donating blood and saving lives!
As these young people depart high school to pursue new opportunities, we wish them much success, and encourage them to continue serving as a blood donor wherever they might go. We can be proud of these young people who will be our future leaders, because they understand the importance of community and good citizenship!
In conclusion, I strongly recommend and encourage all donor to call 800-GIVE-LIFE (800-448-3543) to schedule an appointment. Of course, you can always walk-in at the respective public location, and you will be served. Please know that your support is greatly appreciated!

Brick Wall
Editor, Times-Union:In response to "No Gray."
I'm sure you think Matt is disruptive. After all, he disagrees with you in somewhat of an indirect sarcastic manner. You are also vitriolic and very insulting. Among my college psychology classes was a "human behavior" class. I practiced many times while watching people in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC. I became quite good at defining character traits. One fact I know is that anyone who doesn't see gray is a strict disciplinarian. That trait may well be good for a military man, but not for a leader. And certainly would be harsh on children. Sooner or later, sometime in your life, for your own self gratification, you will see gray. If you say "no", you will be lying. Another fact I'm sure of is this. "Matt's type" will continue to answer your tirades. My "type" will sooner or later and ignore you. "Tapp's type" will tell you to shut up and listen. Then should you open your mouth, he'd shut it for you. What the three types of us must recognize is that talking to "your type" is like talking to a brick wall. Just some observations.

Editor, Times-Union:This is for the Warsaw Community High School Class of 2005.
For those seniors who are staying local to continue their education, I'd like to recommend they volunteer 30 minutes or an hour each week at one of the schools. I think these facilities would appreciate it. Volunteering is a good thing to do!

Proud?
Editor, Times-Union:Mr Guard:
Are you proud of the record deficit amassed bythis administration?
Are you proud of more and more of the neuro-toxic chemical mercury being released into our air and water because of this administration?
Are you proud that in excess of 100,000 people have died in Iraq because of the lies of this administration? Are you equally proud our service people were sent to war ill-equipped?
Are you proud that No Child Left Behind has been reduced to feel-good rhetoric?
Are you proud this administration lied to congress about the cost of prescription drug bill?
Are you proud $8.8 billion of reconstruction money meant for Iraq has disappeareed under this administration's watch?
Are you proud this administration considers the experimental drug testing on foster children "essential"?
Are you proud that millionaires received huge tax breaks while the working poor received nothing? Are you proud 12 million American children live in poverty?
Are you proud 33 million Americans are "food insecure" (hungry)?
As an American, I am sickened, not proud, of these facts.
As for you're bold predictions for 2008, I believe people are slowly awakening to the growing tyrrany of this theocracy.

Red Light Running
Editor, Times-Union:I have a question for Ann Sweet.
If I loan my car to someone that runs a red light and that person refuses to admit guilt, who goes to court, pays fines, loses points on their license and may end up on high-risk insurance?
From the tone of your letter, you seem to want to make this more than a simple traffic violation. Perhaps even a misdemeanor, which could even mean jail time.
I understand what you're trying to do and I agree that something needs to be done, but I'm not sure big brother is ever the answer.

Thought-Provoking
Editor, Times-Union:Kudos to Patti Hanson and David Smolen for their letters to the editor June 3 regarding the determined effort to terminate Dr. David McGuire's position as superintendent of Warsaw Schools.
They both presented thought-provoking ideas and information that had not been previously aired.
After reading their letters, they have caused one to realize that there are sides to this issue after all.
Thanks for enlightening us.

God's Plan
Editor, Times-Union:Driving home from the final recognition service for a longtime wife of a friend, I pondered the event in which praise for the gifted woman flowed easily from the ones present.
A brochure handed to all present tells her life story, concluding: "She lived her life by committing everything and everyone to the Lord in prayer. As she walked with the Lord on this earth, we can be confident that she now also walks with Him in Heaven."
A Bible quotation followed from Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
What am I placing my hope in, and what are you placing your hope in for the future? Luck? Government? Education? A plan? Intelligence? Investments? Job? Or in God?
A present Guideposts magazine tells of Catherine Marshall's son, Peter, and his wife having two of their three children born with a rare genetic disease. Born years apart, both died after a few weeks of life. Grandma Catherine had prayed for healing and life for each with great imploring to God, but it was not to be. Following months of doubt, Catherine received insight as she arose early daily to praise God and recover her former relationship from which she had strayed in her grief. She did, and God's grace came in. Her renewed faith and hope brought forth books, like "Christy" and "Julie", and numerous Guideposts articles the next 10 years.
I hope your hope, as mine, is or becomes like Catherine Marshalls, in a Person, Jesus Christ. Right now, in my later days, I do have God's Presence to comfort and guide me.
A familiar gospel song sings "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the dearest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ the Solid Rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand."
Hope is available to help you walk with the Lord here, and, as the earlier scripture quoted in Jeremiah says, a future is promised in Heaven. This is God's plan for you and me. Let's walk with God together. That's true hope!

Vandalism Victims

Proper Recycling
Editor, Times-Union:Dear Residents of Kosciusko County Solid Waste District:
I have just received the recycling bill for May.
It states that during the month of May, Syracuse had a 6-yard container of trash to dispose of, and that they had to landfill a container of glass from both Mentone and North Webster because someone had thrown window glass into the container!
Window glass is not recyclable. Only glass food jars or bottles may be put into the recycling bins. The District has worked very diligently to reduce the costs of recycling, but when residents chose to use the bins as their personal trash dump, or to throw in non-recyclable materials the costs will increase!
I am asking that area residents to help the District and our recycler by only putting in the proper recyclables. Ninety-nine percent of our residents do a wonderful job of recycling, and we appreciate their efforts.
The proper recyclables are: steel cans, aluminum cans, clear and amber glass food jars and bottles, mixed paper (catalogs, magazines, junk mail), No. 1 plastics (pop bottles, shampoo and other bottles with PETE on them), No. 2 plastic (milk jugs, conditioner, detergent bottles, etc.), newspaper and cardboard (as well as paperboard--cake boxes, mac 'n cheese boxes).
If you have a question about the recyclability of something - please call us at 574-372-3087 or email me at [email protected]
Our recyclers work very hard at keeping the recycling stations clean and safe, please help them by recycling right!
Thank you,
