God-Given Talents

Editor, Times-Union:
For what are you using your God-given talents?

In our families, it is often acknowledged that our children are so different in interests and abilities. Johnny is running his cars, trucks, powershovel and tractor around the room and yard. Mary follows her mother around the house to learn to cook, sew, do laundry. Billy goes often to the piano. Sarah puts on her nurse outfit when with her dolls. Tim kicks a ball, a can, and carries a ball bat most of the time.

God endows everyone with certain gifts, talents, capabilities. It's amazing how everyone's gift fits together for the serving of all others' needs in a town, or beyond. Is that why we are so endowed by God? Or could it be that he gifted each of us to use these talents to glorify Him? How? By using them to benefit others, and thus bring glory to God, in our service to mankind in obedience to Him.

The talents with which He had endowed us are not to be used selfishly for our own profit. You and I could easily list dozens or more variously and exceptionally gifted by God with skills of hands, minds, and voices who "build ever bigger barns of accumulations of material wealth." These give little, if any, from their wealth for others, which is disobedience to God's purpose in giving their talents. When they do give anything they want the message of their benevolent giving flashed largely everywhere.

We are trustees, stewards only, for all and everything, and everyone of us belong to God, have daily life from God, have abilities from God, have breathing from God, sight, hearing, etc. from God, temporarily.

What we have from God needs to be used to give glory to God, bring praise to God, and honor Him. This we do in loving and caring deeds for the less fortunate ones who are in need. Matthew 25:40. Those who have viewed the TV program "Extreme Makeover" see a blessed sample which needs multiplied many times over here and everywhere to the glory of God.

Parents, God has given you a child, or children to give guidance to their God-given talents. "Train up a child how he should live, and he will remember it all of his life." - Proverbs 22:6 TEV.

We sing "All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. So thank the Lord, yes, thank the Lord for all His love." Let's do it!

Valley GPAs

Editor, Times-Union:
Aaron Foster wrote an excellent letter regarding the fiasco of Tippecanoe Valley's awards program last Monday night. He is a fine example of our students who deserve recognition. I commend him for his acheivements, as well as Aaron Reed, Trenton Newsome, Kelsey Reed, David Lash, Aaron Rovenstine, Sheena Reed, Katie Hileman and Carolyn Scripture. There are others I can't name because I'm just a mom and don't know everyone, but someone at the school should be able to do so.

Two years ago, I was told by the person responsible, that since grade point averages would now be weighted for AP courses, the mathematical difficulties meant class standings could no longer be computed for juniors. When my daughter became a senior, that information was still missing from grading reports. Can it be that the top 10 were not announced because they can't figure it out?

Last summer I was told no one there knew the school SAT code I needed to request scores because certain persons were unavailable during the summer. Over a four-year period I have never been able to have an official transcript sent with only one request. Does anyone else remember last fall's major problems with course scheduling?

I am pleased in many respects with my childrens' matriculation at Valley. Their teachers have been dedicated, caring, competent and effective. On the other hand, over the last three years the administration has been appalling, and the school board weak. I appeal to that board of good individuals to step up and claim the potential contained in this fine school system.

Against Gay Marriage

Editor, Times-Union:
Never mind that an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose gay marriage. It's perilously close to becoming the law of the land - unless citizens step up and demand our federal lawmakers pass the Marriage Protection Amendment.

Backing the amendment is not about bigotry. Marriage is open to any two individuals who meet certain criteria regarding age and blood relationship, and who are of the opposite sex. Gay activists seek not to end discrimination, but rather to completely redefine - and thus undermine - the foundational institution of marriage.

Without the MPA, there's nothing to prevent activist judges - like those on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, which legalized gay marriage a few years ago - from creating not only gay marriage, but legalizing polygamy and even marriages between people and their pets.

We must help our senators see beyond the liberal spin and demand they vote the will of their constituents when they consider the amendment in early June.

Gas Math

Editor, Times-Union:
Gas Alert! Gas Alert!
Watch out at the gas station! We're getting taken at both ends. I took a 6-gallon gas can and filled it and was charged on the pump for 7-1/2 gallons of gas! Question: How do you get 7-1/2 gallons of gas in a 6-gallon can? Can someone answer that for me? The gas was $2.869 a gallon, but I ended up paying $3.375 a gallon. What a bargain! I wonder if all the stations are having trouble counting the actual gallons of gas that you're putting in your car? Something to think about!

Toll Road Leasing

Editor, Times-Union:
I've written to you before about this "life-long lease" that's being proposed by the present Indiana governor. To me anyway, it's a crime to profit, by anyone's unwitting efforts. If a bugler does that, they go to jail, eventually.

We're being told that there's a federal lawsuit, brought against the very idea having a "foreign concern" running that highway. Here-here, as the Brits would yell out, the people paid (and are still paying) the bills for that. But for immediate gain, money isn't always of value, the present governor wants to rid the state of that burden. What could seem more prudent for the short term, until you hear that that "new corporation" doesn't want any competition. So, we are not to build anything paralleling that route. Aren't we always told that competition is actually good? Of course, the politicians will point their fingers accusingly at the "new owners" while saying they themselves are not doing anything ethically wrong or illegal.

I, myself, live a long distance from that highway, so I don't lose anything directly anyway. The foodstuffs and manufactured goods travel that road may be just the starting point for you and yours. I have let off some steam, and my thoughts put forward if the folks that control things are listening at all.

Leave Well Enough Alone

Editor, Times-Union:
The recent news articles surrounding the death of Rob Moser are very disturbing. It's bad enough the family has to deal with their loss. They shouldn't have to deal with the reminders of the past problems Rob had.

Have some respect for the family.

It's a tragedy when someone in your family passes away. Every article I have read on the story always has his criminal history at the bottom.

Why not let him rest in peace and give the family some respect?
