Relay For LifeEditor, Times-Union:
Relay For Life was a great success this year due to the outstanding fund-raising efforts of our teams. We achieved our goal of $40k and then surpassed it by another $13k by the next morning. In keeping with my promise to the participants, my head was shaved around midnight. (A fantastic effort by the teams, as we were about $1,500 short at 11:30 p.m.).Some people and some organizations deserve special mention for their going above and beyond to make this Relay For Life a success. Kosciusko Community Hospital did a wonderful job with this years' Survivor Dinner, as well as the Health Fair. Participation by cancer survivors at this event was outstanding and we look forward to their continued participation in 2005. I would like to personally thank this year's committee, and the large number of teams, (lots of them new), for their support. Without volunteers, an event like this is not possible. Lots of new friends were made at this event. It's really hard not to when you are camping out with a large group of people with the same goal in mind.
If you have never experienced Relay For Life, but enjoy being around many wonderful people, please think about joining us next year. It truly is a very moving event.
Thank you, Kosciusko County, for your continued support.

Marine Replies
Editor, Times-Union:A reply to letter from Mr. Dennis Lundgren, Times-Union May 18, 2004 -
1. I am not a former Marine. I am a retired first sergeant of the Marines. There are no former or ex Marines - only Marines.
2. As a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart I do know the award requirements. " ... for wounds sustained in combat, or combat situations ..."
3. I have only a basic knowledge of rank construction in the U.S. Air Force, but I find it difficult to see how one airman could hold non-commissioned rank and limited duty officer status at the same time. (Of course I agree what LDO means)
4. You and I can spend, and waste, a lot of time beating on each other - to no avail - we do, however, have one common bond - we vote!
No matter who gains the presidency, we voters all win - because we exercised out right to vote - the only losers are those citizens who do not vote.
If the correspondence between Mr. Lundgren and me compels anyone to vote, for whomever, then the "back-and-forth" has been worthwhile. Semper fi.

Recounting Sacrifices
Editor, Times-Union:Memorial Day is the time to recount the sacrifices of all America's warriors. But this year the nation will focus attention on those of the "Greatest Generation," the veterans of World War II. This Memorial Day weekend, in Washington, D.C., a memorial to the men and women of that war will be dedicated.
Not all veterans who served our nation then will be able to attend the event, and so it falls to the communities of America to see that their World War II veterans are remembered and acknowledged, personally and publicly.
On May 29, the American Legion Post 49 and the city of Warsaw will sponsor a day of events and conduct ceremonies to honor these veterans, beginning with a prayer breakfast on Saturday at 7 a.m. at the Legion Post home at the corner of Fort Wayne and Buffalo streets.
It is fitting that we should at this time thank God for these World War II veterans who served our country so well, asking peace for those souls offered up and blessing on those who yet walk among us. Beginning the Memorial Day weekend with a prayer breakfast offers that opportunity.
The pubic is invited and is encouraged to attend this breakfast. World War II vets will attend free, others can make a donation at the door.

Students Recognized
Editor, Times-Union:Thursday, WCHS had their annual Renaissance Convocation. For those not familiar with Renaissance, it is a recognition program, recognizing teachers, staff, volunteers and students. Students are recognized in the areas of academics, citizenship and attendance. I have been a parent volunteer with Renaissance for the past six years. Every year that I watch the program unfold, I am always amazed and proud at the conduct of the students. Congregated in the Tiger Den are 1,800 students, teachers, staff and parents. The program runs close to two hours and the students always display excellent manners and seem to enjoy the program.
This is an outstanding program! At its heart is Sandy Carmichael. Every year she gives an amazing amount of her time and energy to make Renaissance a success. At her side is a fleet of parent volunteers, teachers and staff. Community businesses and individuals make it possible to award students and teachers with wonderful prizes. It is truly a team effort.
My youngest graduates this year, and so I also will move on. It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with Sandy and her crew to help build an outstanding program.
Congratulations to all involved.

Support The Troops
Editor, Times-Union:For those of you who don't support our troops that are over there in harm's way, go over to a neighbor or friend who has a son, daughter, wife or husband and tell them. Just tell them you don't support the war or our troops, also tell them you don't support our country. It is your right. But who gave you these rights? Wasn't someone shooting their mouth off and going home every night to their families.
From all the wars this country has ever fought, there are graves and memorials that honor our fallen heroes. They have made this a great country, nation and maybe the greatest on Earth. Out of all who went into battle for freedom, there were a lot who opposed war and the policies of this country. But instead of trying to twist everyone's mind, they went, they died but yet live on in freedom.
All our fallen live on in freedom and the minds of almost everyone in this country. This is a great country, we have to stand together, if you oppose this, go over to the countries we are at war with and tell them you don't support the U.S.A. Whine to them that you think all that's done in this country is wrong. Also, push your beliefs down their throats (which a lot of you do real good).
All in all, don't degrade this great country. War is not something to turn off at night and go to bed, thinking when you get up the next day everything will be fine. Over there in the other countries, when you tell them you are against this country, they might just let you have a little bit of freedom and oppose their way of life. For about 10 seconds.

Blaming America
Editor, Times-Union:I don't know how anybody could write such a negative article. I know there are many people who are so quick to blame America first. If I were to go to a foreign country I would hold my head up high and remind them that we have given them zillions of dollars for their welfare and shed American blood so they could be free. I could go on and on.
This is still a Christian country in spite of the derelicts who are trying to take "In God We Trust" from our currency and "Under God" from our pledge of allegiance. Also the atheists who want God and the name of Jesus from all other parts of our lives.
As for weapons of mass destruction, I do not believe it is a lie, but people like Ms. Newton will not believe it until it hits them in the face. Then they will blame America for not stopping them.
September 11 was a wakeup call for American but I wonder if it really registered to the people in this country who are so quick to blame America for it. America is not responsible for Osama Bin Laden, al-Queda, the Taliban or all other Muslim militants that are killing anybody who stands in their way. When are we going to get it in our thick heads that we need to do something to stop them.
How can this country do a better job in Iraq when all the opposite party members and liberals are criticizing every move our president is trying to do to stop them.
All the Arab nations are listening to what is being said from day to day and this just "eggs" them on to fight more against us.
In time of war we should get behind our wonderful military and let the world know that we are not cowards but that is just what we are doing.
