Salvation Army Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
As we enter National Salvation Army Week May 14-20, we would like to take the opportunity to thank those who support our outreach to people in need in Kosciusko County.

During our Second Annual "Doughnut Day" on May 8, we thanked Kosciusko County for their support by serving free doughnuts and coffee that morning. This was made possible through contributions from Krispy Kreme Donuts and Owen's Supermarkets, for which we are immensely grateful. We also wish to thank CVS Pharmacy for providing us a site to celebrate Doughnut Day on their premises. You helped to make Doughnut Day a success.

In the past, The Salvation Army has been privileged to serve many cups of coffee and doughnuts to service personnel. From the famed "Doughnut Girls" in World War I to most recently in Kosovo, the American public has generously responded in supporting our troops through The Salvation Army. In preparation for Memorial Day, we remind everyone to take a moment to thank our veterans who have ensured the freedom we enjoy today.

2001 marks the 80th year of the presence of The Salvation Army in Warsaw, just 41 years after The Salvation Army "invaded" the United States. Through war, disaster, economic depression and the challenge of an ever changing society, the Army has been on the "front lines" meeting human need in the name of Jesus Christ.

An army is only as good as its support. We are grateful for the United Way, service clubs, churches, families and individuals who give of their time, monies and gifts-in-kind which help equip us to stay on the "front."

May God richly bless you,
Captains Michael & Audrey Schneider

Cat Killed

Editor, Times-Union:
On Monday morning at 7:30, we found a beautiful long-haired black and white cat killed on Smith Street near the fairgrounds.

To the driver who didn't or wouldn't slow down, "Have a happy day."

News To Use

Editor, Times-Union:
Thank you so much for taking your time to show the Kosciusko County Head Start Children served through Cardinal Center how the Times-Union is published and printed. The children and staff found this time to be very informative and rewarding.

We regularly discuss several of your articles and especially find the local photographs, such as the Amish buggy, the fishermen and the red fox, extremely interesting. We also enjoy "Tell Me A Story" section, the sports and the comics. We are trying to convey to the children the importance of literacy at an early age by introducing them to interesting literature such as we find in the Times-Union.

During the next couple of weeks we will be publishing our own Head Start Enrichment Arts Newspaper. We trust this will be an encouragement to the students as they learn to enjoy effectiveness of the written word and the impact it has on others.

Sincerely,
Maureen Caputo

Honor Veterans

Editor, Times-Union:
May is the month set aside to honor our deceased veterans. We listen to speeches; place flowers, wreaths and flags on their graves; watch parades; and see "Old Glory" waving in the breeze. Our country is proud of her and our veterans who died so others may be free.

However, there are "zillions" of veterans in our country who have been forgotten. Some are homeless, while others are just making ends meet. Some are in nursing homes. We need to remember them also because they helped fight for our freedoms.

Some veterans in government nursing homes make paper flowers called "poppies." They sell them to service organizations to raise money.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49 of Warsaw is proud to be one of these organizations. We offer these poppies to the public for a donation. This year our members will be out at various businesses with our poppy cans May 18 and 19. So, when you see them, give generously. The money raised goes to help veterans and their families.

Last Memorial Day, there was a huge crowd at Oakwood Cemetery for services. Let's all attend this year and bring a friend. Remember all our veterans!

Bush Oil Company

Editor, Times-Union:
It looks like Geoge W. Bush is going to keep his promise to the American people. Cutting our taxes. Key words (it looks like). He said he would not do anything about high gas prices, but wants Congress to pass his tax cut so the American people will have more money to pay for higher gas prices.

So all you Bush supporters can forget about your tax cut, it has gone south to Texas to all the oil companies, including George W. Bush's oil company and the oil companies who gave $25 million to get George W. Bush elected.

So it looks like our tax cut will be making George W. Bush a lot of money, including all the oil companies, in higher gas prices. Our government was hammering on Microsoft and Bill Gates for being a monopoly. What do they think all the oil companies are?

We have to buy gas even if it goes to $10 a gallon. Maybe it should, then we might get something done about it. As always, Have A Nice Day.

School Safety

Editor, Times-Union:
Dear Senators Bayh & Lugar:

Please support the Bob Smith (R-N.H.) amendment (SA 547) to prevent further school massacres.

On at least three occasions, there have been school shootings that were halted by an armed security guard, assistant principal or catering manager. In all of these cases, an adult used a firearm to stop a student from killing more people.

The Smith Amendment will save children's lives and will protect people like Assistant Principal Joel Myrick of Pearl, Miss., who used a firearm to stop a killer's rampage in 1997.

Unfortunately, I think that people sometimes want to use school tragedies to promote their own political agendas through media sensationalism. There are not enough police to patrol every school in America; therefore, it is imperative that Congress pass the Smith Amendment - a public safety measure that will actually save lives.

Should Senator Smith offer his amendment, you will have a chance to vote on whether you prefer school violence OR reasonable public safety measures. I hope you will opt for public safety measures.

Please vote in favor of SA 547, the Smith Amendment, to prevent school massacres.

Along the same lines I would vehemently request that you adamantly oppose the amendment (SA 410) by Senator Robert Byrd (D-Va.) regarding his twisted version of firearms safety. This amendment would expand arcane rules making it virtually impossible to teach our kids firearms safety, proficiency or firearms responsibility.

I've written to you many times expressing my belief that education will always do more good than regulation and Senator Byrd's proposal would restrict, if not eliminate, the legal opportunity to educate the youth of America regarding the safe & proper use of firearms while also instilling into them the inherent respect firearms deserve.

Once again, Mr. Senators, I request that you support safety and education (SA-547) while opposing educational oppression (SA-410).

Sincerely,
David E. Roose
