Celebration Of Culture

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Kosciusko County who braved the wind and cool temperatures to attend the "Celebration of Cultures, Community and Christ" on Friday evening. Your enthusiasm and positive attitude made a very positive statement about how the vast majority of the residents of our community feel about our diversity. Because of YOU, we truly were able to celebrate our unique diversity of cultures and the unity of our community within that diversity, as well as the celebration of reconciliation that is available through Christ.

I would also like to personally thank the many, many individuals and organizations who contributed through their generous financial contributions, their time and their resources to make this event possible. We had little time to prepare, but this obstacle was overcome by many people working side by side to put together a worthwhile program.

A special "thank you" should be given to Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine, Captain Steve Foster and the men and women of our law enforcement agencies who gave of their time and energy to protect and serve the people of our county during the events of this past weekend (and every day throughout the year). Thank you all for a job well done!

The downtown businesses of Warsaw deserve our thanks for the sacrifice they made by closing their doors on Saturday. Let's not forget them in the future when we shop.

Finally, I want to thank everyone within the community who made a positive statement by not going downtown during the rally on Saturday. Your absence spoke very loudly!

It is a privilege to live in a community where an event like the "Celebration of Cultures, Community and Christ" can become a reality. Thank you all for making this a meaningful event.

Randy Packer, chairman, The Greater Warsaw Ministerial Assoc.

Plagiarism

Editor, Times-Union:
In reading your report on the Warsaw school board meeting of May 10, 1999, I came across an interesting comment. Dr. Jennifer Brumfield said that plagiarism is not fair to other students who have tried to do the right thing.

While I agree completely with fighting plagiarism, I would submit that this is the wrong reason for a policy. I have never thought of education as a competitive sport. The selection of a valedictorian and salutorian is to honor achievement, not to designate winners.

Therefore, the purpose of the anti-plagiarism policy should be to help students do their best for themselves. A student who copies a term paper off the Internet harms only himself, not his fellow students. The purpose of an anti-plagiarism policy, then, should be to foster achievement.

Guest Speaker

Editor, Times-Union:
On May 6, I had the honor of being the guest speaker for two senior English classes at Warsaw High School. I was extremely impressed with the courtesy, interest and intelligence expressed by these fine, clean-cut young people. They are a wonderful reflection of their parents and their able instructor, Bill Kovach. I left feeling that my Social Security will be in good hands when young people such as these take charge.

Voter Turnout

Editor, Times-Union:
Well, the politicians won again and our people lost because 75 percent stayed home. We should have three parties; the third being called "The People's Party." We need to get women and all blacks to get out and vote for the people's party. President Abraham Lincoln once said, "No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent." Did the 75 percent non-voters give their consent?

Albert G. Smith, Warsaw

Silveus Says Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my supporters, friends, family and committee members for the many wonderful things that took place during our campaign. Each and every one of you gave 100 percent and were honest, trustworthy and showed nothing but the highest level of integrity. I feel very proud, happy and honored that I had the support from the quality of people like you.

Thanks again and I wish all the candidates in November the best.
