Bloodmobiles
Editor, Times-Union:During the month of May, residents of Kosciusko County will have several opportunities to donate blood at bloodmobiles hosted by the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The following schedule outlines our donor schedule for the month of May:
May 13, Syracuse United Methodist Church, from 2 to 7 p.m.; May 25, Mutual Federal Bank, Warsaw, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; May 27, Warsaw Chemical Co.*, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; May 29, Warsaw Community High School, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (World War II Veterans* Recognition Day). *Indicates that this drive is closed to the public.
During the first four months of 2004, residents of our county donated a total of 888 units of blood! This is a very significant response; however, we need additional donations throughout the remainder of 2004 to exceed our goal of 3,275 units of blood. The blood supply across our nation remains critical at a one- to two-day supply, and over 95 percent of the blood donated within the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region is returned to hospitals within our region to meet ongoing needs for surgery, trauma and illness and disease conditions.
You will note that there are several donor opportunities open to the pubic during the month of May. I wish to highlight the public blood drive scheduled for May 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Warsaw Community High School. This blood drive will honor those local veterans of World War II as part of the day-long event scheduled to recognize our World War II veterans across the United States. We have invited our "Hometown Heroes," including firefighters, law enforcement personnel, EMS personnel and the families of our local National Guard troops, to come to this blood drive and "roll up their sleeves" to honor those men and women who gave so much in their service to our country during World War II. Won't you consider joining them in this effort?
Please call 800-GIVE-LIFE (800-448-3543) and schedule an appointment to donate blood in May. Of course, "walk-ins" are always welcome at the public blood drives.
Thank you very much for your wonderful support and remember: "Together, we can save a life."

Rat/Mouse Rescue
Editor, Times-Union:My name is Heather Leughmyer and I run a domestic rat/mouse rescue in Columbia City. I will be setting up a table for the rescue this Saturday the 15th at Paws and Claws in Warsaw at 11 a.m. to around 4 p.m. I have 20 permanent residents at the rescue but due to the growing number of requests, I get to take in rats, I have just recently started adopting new ones out. I am overrun with fosters right now and need to get them adopted out before I can take in more. I am looking for a way to gain publicity for not only my rescue but for rats as pets in general. Domestic rats have gotten a bad reputation which they do not deserve, and as well as rescuing them, I am trying to educate the public about them.

Honoring Veterans
Editor, Times-Union:On May 29, our community will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The long overdue National World War II Memorial will be dedicated in Washington, D.C., at 1 p.m. our time. Locally, the American Legion and citizens of all ages will gather during several events to honor our own World War II veterans who aren't able to attend the ceremony in our nation's capital.
I urge all of your readers to plan on coming to the World War II Expo on May 29, enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow citizens, have fun and say a special "thank you" to our members of the "greatest generation" who paved the way for America to be the beacon of light of freedom that it is today.
They are America's heroes.

Adams Says Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:I would like to take this opportunity to express a sincere thanks and appreciation to all voters for support and confidence in me in the May 4 primary election.
Regardless of how one votes, it is everyone's right and duty to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice. We should all be proud and thankful we have this opportunity that is not present everywhere throughout the world. This is a democracy and the American Way!

Candidate, Kosciusko County Treasurer
Bike Fest
Editor, Times-Union:The first annual Bike Fest was held in Winona Lake this weekend. It was a great event. It was wonderful to see all ages outside and having fun. Families were enjoying the races, the food, the music. We are to lucky to have such events here in our community. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this such a super weekend event.
