Stop Whining

Editor, Times-Union:
Recent letters to the Editor, complaining of the president's using money to wage war at the expense of veterans' medical care, is just so much whimpering and whining!

I challenge anyone to prove, absolutely, that any deserving veteran has, or is, being denied proper care.

Veterans are not all in one category! The deserving veterans are: former prisoners of war, holders of the Medal of Honor, disabled as a result of combat, wounded (and awarded the Purple Heart medal) as a result of combat, disability or injuries received as a result of training exercises or other conditions not in combat. And finally, those drawing retired military pay - all the above take precedence for medical care.

There are veterans who honorably served one enlistment, no combat and left the service.

The Veterans Affairs Department is not immune to bureaucratic errors, but I'll repeat my challenge for proof of any deserving veteran being not receiving adequate care.

I'm fed up to here with all the sore losers, whiners and those in Hollywierd - Sarandon, Robbins, Goldberg, Moore and Streisand, all beating up their own First Amendment rights!

Say what you like, write what you like, but be prepared to back it up!

George W. Bush is our president and our commander-in-chief! Live with it!

Mother's Day

I wrote this sometime in the 1980s. Read this with a smile on your face because that is how it was written. I wrote it with love and not anger. I am sure most mothers have been there.

Mother's Day
They put aside one day of the year

To honor Mothers so sweet and so dear

The husbands and children on this one day

Said that they would be our slaves:

"Oh, don't forget it's Mother's Day."

All year long we clean and cook:

On this one day we're off the hook.

Don't look sad be happy this day:

"Oh, don't forget it's Mother's Day."

Cook our dinner, fix our steak:

On this one day give us a break

Get together, be happy and gay:

"Oh, don't forget it's Mother's Day."

As WE clean the kitchen and all the mess,

We all thought today we would get some rest:

As we look at our husbands and children, we smile and say:

Oh hell, it was just Mother's Day."

I hope you enjoyed my one poem, I've never tried to do it again.

Happy Mother's Day.

Special Olympics

Editor, Times-Union:
Special Olympic athletes are the most straightforward individuals you may ever have the pleasure to meet. When they compete, there is no concern for college scouts, agents, sponsor deals, business ventures or money. There is only the love of the competition itself, compassion for the friendship of their competitors and the pride of being a part of group that shares their love of life. I have personally had the pleasure of being closely associated with junior and high school athletes for over 25 years. I have known many great individuals with whom we still share a close bond. But the athletes that remain closest to my heart are Special Olympians. Take or make the time to get to know a Special Olympic athlete and you will understand why I refer to them as real athletes in an unreal world.

Saturday, May 10th at Tippecanoe Valley High School will be the five-county Area 2 Spring Games. Approximately 400 participants from St. Joe, Elkhart, Marshall, Starke and Kosciusko counties will take part in track and field, bocce, weight lifting, swimming and 3-on-3 basketball. This event is typically held at Notre Dame, but due to some construction, TVHS was selected as the alternate host site. Several local organizations and individuals are taking part as volunteers or have contributed to helping fulfill needs. If you would like to be a part of this great heartwarming event, please call 574-353-7156 by Thursday May 7. Admission is free, so join us we watch real athletes in an unreal world.

Gymnastics has arrived to Special Olympics Kosciusko County. Several athletes have been practicing on Thursday evenings at the Touch of Life Church in Warsaw from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you are eligible for Special Olympics (or know of someone), then feel free to join us.

The Kosciusko County Magic basketball team recently completed a perfect season in league play. Due to their large winning margins, they were to be moved to a different class in tournament play. However, a technical glitch prevented them from participating in the state tourney. Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff for a great season.

Coming attractions in June are the State Summer Games in Terre Haute. Also, practice and competition for softball and golf will begin.

If you are interested in more information or would like to compete, contact Special Olympic Kosciusko County Coordinator Becky Walls for more information. She can be reached at spkobwalls.aol.com or 574-594-2962.

Special Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
This letter is to thank specific individuals for their help and kindness over the last four months since our house fire. To deal with the insurance company after your house burns, you need to instantly be a builder and an insurance agent. We didn't know anything about building a house, and we didn't understand the language in our insurance policy.

Thank you is such a small thing to say, but it is highly heartfelt and sincere! We want to thank Terry Shepherd for dealing with the insurance company and the insurance adjuster. For using his knowledge to speak for us. Also thank you, Kevin Marose with Hall and Marose Insurance Co. (who wasn't even our insurance agent), for calling our insurance company and speaking with them on our behalf.

Also thank you, Bob List Photography, for making a new first year series of Abbey's pictures - mat, frame and all - for us at no charge (I'm getting tearful even now, just thinking of it), and again thank you to Wal Mart Photography for remaking Abbey's Christmas pictures for us at no charge.

The last four months have been very stressful and trying for our family. Thank you so much to everyone who has encouraged us with your help - cards, letters, everything.
