Immigration Failures

Editor, Times-Union:
This entire immigration issue is the direct result and failure of our nation's political leadership from the top on down. Especially when one considers how our very own Congress and Senate cannot debate or agree on the simplest issue without arguing like children.

It is quit obvious a blind eye has been turned to the immigration problem for quite some time by our elected officials, I think, for the sole purpose of gaining future votes for certain political agendas and to allow some of our American companies to take advantage of cheap labor. Any terrorists would use this opportunity to sneak across our borders. I dare say a challenge that would meet very little if any resistance.

It should be quite apparent to all Americans that those who we have elected to represent us are not getting the job done and should be sent home. Recently, a Congress woman punched or slapped a White House policeman, why hasn't she been arrested? Or removed from Congress? Anyone else would have been thrown in the slammer without question. We need leaders with backbone, not a bunch of whiners or elected officials who haven't a clue how to lead or properly represent the American people and their respective state. The American people need to do a better job of selecting future leaders for this country.

In my opinion, a majority of our elected officials are more concerned about special interests' agendas instead of moral values and the well-being and security of the American people and this country.

The true victims in this political quagmire are the illegals who are only trying to make a better life for their families. Sadly, in their efforts to risk life and limb to live the American dream, many illegals find their dreams exploited by greedy employers from both Mexico (NAFTA) and the U.S. American companies that hire illegals just to save a buck and to replace the American worker should be punished. The American public should be outraged at the companies who are taking advantage of these poor people. Greed is no excuse!

In my opinion, yesterday's so-called boycott by the illegals proved nothing and certainly did not portray a positive image among the American public. We are supposedly a civilized nation governed by laws that all people who choose to live in this country must abide by. To violate such laws requires that the violators be punished, plain and simple. Since the U.S. and Mexico have created this immigration nightmare, I say let them figure it out, if they can. Or we need to find those who can.

I think it's past time for all America to start writing their elected representatives. Some of our elected officials need to be put on notice that their pink slip is on the way. If we the people continue to sit back and say or do nothing, than we need not complain.

For those of you in the Sidney area who enjoy criticizing our Neighborhood Watch Program, we would appreciate all of you putting your energy towards helping our community instead of constantly shooting it down! This program will not work without enough support and volunteers. Are you doing your part in helping, or are you just sitting back and complaining? Volunteers are always welcome and much needed!

Happy Marriage Recipe

Editor, Times-Union:
I (91 and wife 86) married 56 years ago. Does that qualify us to offer suggestions?

There are a few things that kind of bug me regarding our culture. 1- When 15-year-olds have to go to jail for life. Such a wasted life. 2- So many one-parent families. 3- One marriage out of two break up. 4- Parents do not have enough pride in their most valuable property - their children. They farm them out so they can work, hope for the best and wonder why they turn out like they do. Children need and deserve their mother 24 hours a day. They are our very future. 5- So many people give better attention and give better service to their automobile where they spend a few hours each day in, and can even replace, than the body they spend 24 hours a day in, and never replace. They smoke and will put most anything in their tank.

I feel many newlyweds are not really ready for marriage. Marriage requires preparation. They are not ready for the responsibilities that come with marriage. Then they need a home, furniture, perhaps a second car and insurance and more. They get buried in debt. Put it on the charge cards and soon various kinds of friction arrives. I read, "The nearest thing to Heaven on earth, is when husband and wife, mom and dad, and children, live in love and peace together for the Lord and for each other."

To have a good cake, one must put good ingredients in it. To have a good marriage, one must also have good ingredients in it. Someone said, "Before marriage, ask all the questions one can think of, then after marriage you will not have problems." In other words, settle your problems before you get married. My confirmation pastor said, "Pray that you will be filled with God's Holy Spirit, so full, that there will not be room for any bad to enter."

During your entire life, make Heaven your goal. When you plant potatoes, you get potatoes. When you plant corn, you get corn. I suggest plant that which will lead to Heaven. During your entire life, be "about God's business." Join a good church that teaches God's word. Participate in various ways. You can not stop and think I have got it made. Do not be like a can sealed on both ends. You must be like a can that is open in both ends. The more blessings you give, the more room you leave for blessings to be received.

Life is a one-time deal. Once a day has gone by, we do not get a chance to live the same day over again. My high school teacher said, "Always aim high. If you aim for an A, and get a B, not too bad. But if you air for a D and get an F, that would be awful." I like to say, "Always aim upwardly (Heavenly)." That is my recipe for successful marriage and a happy life ... I think that will add years to your life also.

Donate Eyes

Editor, Times-Union:
Are you aware that you can cure blindness without ever going to medical school?

By donating your eyes at death, you provide two corneas which are the clear outer covering of the eye.

Corneas can become clouded or coned causing blindness. However, sight is restored by transplanting a donated clear cornea. Many people have had their sight restored with a cornea transplant, but a donated cornea is needed. Synthetic ones have not yet proven satisfactory.

Inform your family of the desire to donate at your death. Physicians are reluctant to remove body parts without permission of next of kin.
