Save The Cats I
Editor, Times-Union:Have we become so cruel as to let animals starve? Well, the Health Department has become such. Please make people aware of the situation behind Long John Silvers Resturant. There are poor helpless cats and kittens there being fenced off so they cannot secure food by themselves.
The management of Long John Silvers will be hearing from many people throughout the State of Indiana because every Humane society has been notified of this cruelty by the Health Department.
Just go out and talk to the humane society members, see where the fencing has been placed to prevent these wild creatures from securing food and water. I cannot believe a human being would allow such a situation to proceed resulting in the starvation of some of God's little creatures. Whether you love cats or not, the point is we should not allow this to happen.
This is out and out meaness. Please see what you can do for these little creatures and make people of Warsaw aware of the problem.
I am notifying all my friends and they will notify their friends and so on. Hopefully enough people will complain to the Long John Silver home office.
Very sincerly and greatly concerned.

Miracles
Editor, Times-Union:I keep hearing about the Catholic Church and its followers wanting John Paul II to be considered for sainthood. From what I understand, in order to be considered a saint, one must wait four years and prove miracles and all other such nonsense. The Bible is plain that once a person accepts Jesus Christ into their heart as Lord and Saviour they automatically become a saint.
A saint is merely a person who is born again into God's family. Man does not, nor cannot, perform miracles. Only God can do that which is "super"natural.
If John Paul II is credited for doing any miracles, if they were miracles indeed, it would have been God working through His creation to carry out His purpose and will. To attribute a miracle to a finite mortal is spiritual plagiarism.
Peter and Paul never attributed the miracles that were performed through them as of their doing. All of the glory was given to God and it was attempted by them to keep the miracles quiet. Not like Benny Hinn, Kenneth Hagen, Ernest Angly or these other so-called miracle workers.
What a bunch of twaddle. Jesus and the apostles were quiet and humble concerning what God was doing through them. Miracles are personal; between God and the receiver. These television circus performers are not glorifying God, they are riding on God's coat tails using His name in vain to promote their posh existence. If they have the healing powers of God running all through them, if they can summon God to perform miracles at their whim, then why don't they visit the children's cancer ward after hours when there are no cameras or reporters around and heal the place clean of disease? Why do they not keep to the example of Jesus and the apostles by keeping a low profile with 100 percent results. When a miracle happens, God is to get the glory, not the televangelists, popes or any other so-called beatified saints.
People today are so bent on miracles or signs for their pseudo-faith to have substance. If they were to study their Bible they would see that more people were saved when people were martyred than when supernatural miracles were done. Miracles rarely lead others to Christ. When Jesus healed the paraplegic man, did the Pharisees bow down and worship him? How about his parents? No, they sought to kill Jesus. If you have to have a miracle to justify your faith in Jesus Christ (other than the miracle of salvation), you have a heart problem. If you think mortal man can perform miracles, you have a head problem. The Bible says that the angels rejoice every time a person gets saved, not every time a miracle is performed. The only miracle that you need to quantify is that Jesus Christ raised from the dead and that by believing in Him as your personal Savior you may miraculously be born into His family as a bona fide saint.

Editor, Times-Union:I would like to inform the people of Kosciusko County about animal cruelty.
For many months I and a friend of mine have been feeding cats that have been living around Long John Silvers Restuarant. We asked the management nearly a year ago if we could trap them, spay & neuter them.
They did not want us to do this.
Suddenly, someone decided to report to the health department that the cats were there. The health department said the cats had to go as soon as possible.
My friend started trapping the cats and getting them spayed and neutered at his own expense. He has caught 13 of them so far. The cats were then placed on farms.
My friend spoke to Brad Turner at the health department and asked him for time to remove all the cats. He agreed to 2 weeks.
My friend trapped a female cat and his vet said she was nursing. He had to take the mother cat back and tried to find her kittens. He and others have searched for the kittens with no luck. Brad Turner is aware of the situation and is going ahead and blocking in the areas where this mother and her kittens are living. In other words Mr. Turner is going to starve these cats to death.
This is outrageous. Some compassion should be shown to these innocent animals. There are 3 of us trying to rescue the mother and babies.
Time is running out.
Please call Mr. Turner at the Health Department and ask him to show some humanity.

Editor, Times-Union:A very dastardly deed is being carried out by a very hard-hearted Kosciusko County Health Department official. Gregory Turner ordered holes around the base of Long John Silvers be closed up immediately under threat of closing down the restaurant, and they were closed off with wire mesh and lattice Thursday.
Gregory Turner did this knowing he was trapping at least 4 adult cats and a litter of kittens. I had been given permission by Gregory Turner to live trap and relocate the cats during only a two week duration. The two weeks expired April 22. During those two weeks, I had trapped 13 cats. Ten of them were spayed or neutered at a cost of $1,300 and placed in good care.
The other three were placed on a dairy farm by request of the farmer. After requesting on Tuesday an extension of time to live trap the remaining four adults and litter of kittens of one of them, Gregory Turner told me that my time of 'heroics' was over. Today, contractors put wire mesh and wooden lattice around the base of the restaurant - trapping these cats and kittens under there to starve to death.
Long John Silvers management and personnel have been very supportive of our (Rhonda Hardy and my) humane mission there. They are not to blame at all; they have been our allies. Come on, police, halt this cruelty to animals by opening a section of this wire/lattice, so I can continue to rescue every last one of them.
I know someone who will take all of them and give them a good home. Join Rhonda Hardy and me and our dear animal rescue friends immediately.
You must do it now. They won't live long without food and water, especially a nursing mother cat and her kittens! Please fight for them now.

Feeding Tubes
Editor, Times-Union:Several years ago I watched my brother David go from a husky guy of 28 years old, who could knock you out with one punch, to an 85-pound person.
He had the feeding tube with life-support. The feeding tube was never removed, but after three months, the life support was discontinued. He died the same day. He was never in the fetal position, like I have witnessed on several occasions.
I would like to ask your readers who are health care professionals, their opinion on the Terri Schiavo's case. I don't know how old the videos of her were, but she never was in the fetal position.
I talked to a nurse who worked in a Health Care establishment for several years. So what do you doctors/nurses/techs have to say?

Bush Foibles
Editor, Times-Union:Re: M. Tapp's and J.B. (Donna) Butche's letters to the editor:
There's no need to concoct wild conspiracy theories when Bush's record of mistakes, lies and deceit speaks for itself.
Although a progressive myself (since some conservatives have vilified the "liberal" label), M. Tapp's letter and Ms. Butche's follow-up were poorly researched, and obviously do not speak for liberals/progressives as a whole.
To repeat conspiracy theories that have been thoroughly debunked is not only careless, but sets back the progressive movement overall - there's plenty of real stuff that Bush has done to warrant criticism without resorting to innuendos and uncorroborated "evidence" gathered off the Web.
I lean about as far left as anyone I know, but I know as well as anyone should that there's a difference between debate and unsubstantiated attacks. Letters such as theirs, from either side of the political spectrum, are irresponsible and further hinder our ability to have a true debate of the facts.
M. Tapp and J.B. (Donna) Butche, like me, obviously have strong opinions; perhaps they should work more on criticizing Bush for what he is responsible for: lack of a strong response in light of terror warnings when he first took office; $200 billion and counting spent in Iraq; 1,500 Americans and countless Iraqi civilians killed in a war based on lies; the rollback of American rights and liberties via the PATRIOT act; the raping of the environment in the name of big business interests, etc.

Editor, Times-Union:The matter of ending the practice of allowing the filibustering of presidential judicial nominations on the floor of the U.S. Senate is coming to a head. If you believe that conservative, pro-life judges deserve an up-or-down vote by the Senate, then you need to let our two U.S. Senators, namely, Richard Lugar and Evan Bayh, know immediately that you "favor ending the practice of filibustering judicial nominations." Their phone numbers are: Senator Lugar - 202-224-4814 and Senator Bayh - 202-224-5623.
The current political reality is this:
The U.S. Constitution empowers the U.S. Senate to confirm or deny confirmation of presidential appointments to the federal judiciary. A simple majority vote (50 percent plus one, or 51 votes from the 100 members of the U.S. Senate) is all that is constitutionally required for a judge to be confirmed.
Current membership in the U.S. senate stands at: Republicans 55 and Democrats 45.
When Democrats don't like a nominee put forward by our president, however, they threaten to filibuster the nomination. (Filibustering is a stalling tactic used by the minority to prevent the majority viewpoint from prevailing. An individual senator will take the podium and "speechify" endlessly on any and all topics, related and unrelated to the specific issue at hand, thus effectively killing debate on the issue - in this instance, whether or not a particular individual should or should not be confirmed to the federal bench.) The ending of a filibuster requires a 60-vote majority (this is known as evoking "cloture"). Thus, by threatening filibuster of a candidate who doesn't meet their liberal litmus test, Democrats effectively change the constitutional requirement for confirmation to federal judgeships from a 512 vote majority to a 60 vote majority. Remember the current balance of power stated above.
If you believe the constitutional rules for judicial appointments should be strictly adhered to, please let Senators Lugar and Bayh know today that you "favor ending the practice of filibustering judicial nominations." Thank you.
