Congress

Editor, Times-Union:
On Friday, April 27, you published a letter from Mr. Michael L. Stevens which lamented the fact that in our president's first 100 days he did a lot of yap, yap, and that he had not given him the tax break he promised in his campaign. Obviously Mr. Stevens must not understand how our federal government operates. The president is not a dictator, nor do I ever want him to be. Congress is the lawmaking body. The president can only recommend and push for changes, but the Congress must actually enact the laws. Get on the members of Congress to enact the changes you want which the president is asking for and trying to get for us.

KLS Says Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make our first annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon a success! A big thank-you to the community for supporting our event. The donations for game prizes, door prizes, centerpieces, children's books and gifts for the attendees were overwhelmingly generous! A special thank-you to the board members for their help in planning and preparation, publicity, set-up, serving, clean up, for attending the event and bringing their friends, co-workers and staff. Congratulations to the Kosciusko Literacy Services staff for a job well done. Thank you to our game show host, announcer and guest pianist for the entertainment provided! The money raised from this event will help with our mission of increasing literacy in Kosciusko county.

Sincerely,
Joni Truex
Board President, Kosciusko Literacy Service

Special Olympics

Editor, Times-Union:
On behalf of Special Olympics Kosciusko County, we would like to publicly thank all the volunteers that helped out on Saturday at the Lakeview Middle School. Without all of your help, it would have been difficult at best to get all the athletes through their events in the time allotted. For each of you to take time from your busy schedules to help those less fortunate than yourselves truly is a gift from the heart. A special Thank You must go to Gary Nieter for the great photographs and beautiful layout presented in the Times-Union on Monday. His work, as always, delivers messages mere words can never express.

The weather turned out beautiful, the athletes had a great time competing with and helping each other, and all the volunteers had fun too. Of the 45 athletes that participated, 36 qualified to participate in the Area 2 games in South Bend on May 12 at Notre Dame. For reasons unknown, a scheduled race pitting all the volunteers against each other was canceled.

The following people received special recognition for being nominated to represent Kosciusko County at the Area 2 games in the following categories: Athlete of the Year - Robert Svinarich; Volunteer of the Year - Valarie Flanagan; Coach of the Year - Sterling Watkins; Family of the Year - Bea, Gene, and Teri Hughes. These people will be considered in their respective categories against people nominated from the other four counties (Marshall, Stark, Elkhart and St. Joe) competing in South Bend. Winners there will go on to represent Area 2 in the State Games in June.

Once again, to all those who helped out in any way, a very big THANK YOU and we hope to see at next year's track and field meet.

P.S. Don't forget the Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive on May 4 and 5 - a portion of the proceeds will be given to help out our local Special Olympic athletes.

Hope For The Future

Editor, Times-Union:
And here is another old fuddy-duddy. It's difficult for me to imagine anything as vile and evil being put on display as "Freddie Got Fingered." What has happened to our minds and morals as even letting it be listed as "entertainment." My heart aches for our country. If there ever was a more appropriate time for a National Day of Prayer, it surely is now. Isn't it about time we Americans go back and check up on "who" we really are and where we are headed? Even though much is going on that is harmful for our country it is still the best country to live in.

May God, who is still in control, continue to bless our nation and help us return to the morals and integrity he wants us to be. He is the great creator and he loves us with an everlasting love. Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to give you hope and a future."

And this is our only hope for today for America's future.
