Prairie View

Editor, Times-Union:

I'm writing to tell people here in Kosciusko County that there is an address where angels live and work.

At 300 E. Prairie St., Warsaw, you can visit Prairie View Health Care Center.

Not so long ago, we placed my father-in-law in Prairie View Health Care Center.

He has Alzheimer's. It has just an awful grip on him, that we could no longer keep him in our home. At first he did belong here, but as Alzheimer's continued to take control, we needed more help.

The staff there is so caring. We were very lucky to find Prairie View. The residents there are so caring about each other. They are just a smile away.

They have a beautiful grandfather clock that could be serviced if there is someone out there who knows anything about clocks. If anyone knows anything about clocks, keep my grandfather clock in mind.

Thank you, Prairie View.

Connie Rowe Pierceton

Equal

Editor, Times-Union:

"All men are born free and equal." Neither the United States Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence contains this statement.

In an attempt by the government to regulate American society, in its race toward full-blown socialism, we are hounded daily by a liberal president, liberal press and media that everyone is equal. We are not.

French statesman and political philosopher Alexis De Tocqueville wrote "The American people are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom."

Thomas Jefferson said "If people living in a democracy are given too many freedoms, they will abuse those freedoms and bring down that very democracy."

When the government equates a perverted gay with myself as being equal, I take that as an insult.

Wake up, America!

Government

Editor, Times-Union:

When are "we the people" going to wake up?

When are "we the people" going to let crooks stop running our government? Why don't "we the people" look at what is meant by the word "ethics"? When I went to school some 60 years ago, it meant "moral principals." The word "moral" meant a standard of right or wrong. I was always under the impression that those who run our government were to work for "we the people" and set examples of themselves to "we the people."

Mr. House Speaker, Gingrich was proven he didn't follow the House ethics (or moral principles). He kept his job and even had his fine paid for him. Which made my feelings for Mr. Dole go to rock bottom. "We the people" pay taxes for his write-off, we pay their wages that whenever they want a raise, all they have to do is vote in. Wouldn't it be nice if these so-called servants of the people after taking office would still have to walk in we the people's shoes?

We of the common "we the people" would have been fired on the spot if our moral ethics were at question. And as far as a fine? Most of us would have to get out and scratch with the chickens for the money.

I hope there are a few who agree with me, who don't care for "we the people" to give crooks in our government a pat on the back and so on. They are no better than "we the people."

I know this won't change things, but I feel better.

David L. Hillery Milford

Fair Booth

Editor, Times-Union:

This letter is for all of our past customers of El Taco Loco. We would like to thank all of our customers that came to our taco booth at the fair the past three years. Unfortunately, the fair board has decided to deny us the honor of serving you again this year. After preparing and purchasing supplies the last couple of months, we were informed by letter that we are not welcome. My curiosity is aroused as to who they are allowing to have booths there. It has always been my understanding that it is called the Kosciusko County 4-H Fair. I find it hard to believe that it is a Kosciusko Community fair when the people from the community are denied access to honestly earn money for their church. All of our profits go to a fund to build our new church. No money is pocketed by the people working in the booth. In fact, most of our supplies are donated. How many other booths can say the same?

Unfortunately, this gets us nowhere. If somebody can explain to us the real reason we were denied access to the Kosciusko County 4-H Fair, we would be interested in hearing it.

As I said before, we would like to thank all of the past support from all of our repeat customers each year we were there. I would like to mention that we will be at the Cinco de Mayo celebration at Center Lake Park on May 4. We hope to see you all there.

Annett Gutierrez and Mandy Vuittonet Coordinators of El Taco Loco for Our Lady of Guadalupe Church

Liberal Press

Editor, Times-Union:

In response to Mr. Rust's letter of April 29 concerning the decrease in liberal newspaper subscriptions. If memory serves, I seem to have heard much the same thing about the three major TV network news broadcasts. In fact, from a couple things I've read, it appears the entire industry is in a scramble attempting to get some balance and slow the bleeding. But simply turning these people off isn't cutting it. We must find some way of getting conservatives back into the political process.

The liberal press learned an important lesson in 1994. They still will not admit it openly but they know it's true and will not make the same mistake again. All the media hype over the Brady bill and the assault weapon ban brought the conservatives out in much larger numbers than was expected for the 1994 elections with the result of the Democrats losing Congress. Two more gun control measures were passed in September of 1996 but not one word appeared in the liberal press. In fact, most police officials were not notified until January of 1997. The conservatives had cooled off by then and given a choice between a young Bill Clinton and an old Bill Clinton (Bob Dole) decided to stay home on Nov. 5. Result? Four more years of Bill Clinton and a Republican Congress with the "H" scared out of it.

So Mr. Rust, if in fact people are getting tired of the liberal views as it appears they are, then let us hope they act on the more balanced information they get. As someone said once, "Those who reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it."

Volunteer Month

Editor, Times-Union:

April is National Volunteer Recognition Month. It's also the 25th anniversary of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana, which has served over 5,000 area children in the quarter century since its founding.

As the Big Brothers/Big Sisters case manager for Kosciusko County, I want to publicly thank those adults who generously volunteer their time and energy to serve as Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Each of these volunteers is making a big impact in our community. Each is giving a child something that child really needs ] the time and attention of an adult role model, a mentor. Each has seen his or her Little Brother or Sister at least once a month since they were matched, sometimes taking in a sporting event or a movie, attending a school activity, going out to eat, or simply hanging out together.

So many Big Brothers and Big Sisters have made clear to me that the time they spend with their Little Brothers or Sisters means as much to them as it does to the kids.

We still have 24 children on our waiting list here in Kosciusko County, all anxious to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister ] or a Big Couple. Married couples can jointly mentor a child, sharing responsibility for the match between them. Being a Big Brother or Big Sister ] or a Big Couple ] gives adults the opportunity to make a difference in a child's life. What could be more satisfying?

I am available to speak about the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program to service or employee clubs, fraternal organizations, churches or businesses. And, of course, I'd be pleased to answer any questions readers have about becoming a Big Brother, Big Sister or Big Couple. Please give me a call at 888-456-1600.

Meredith Koher Case manager, Kosciusko County Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana

Catholic Faith

Editor, Times-Union:

After reading Rev. Glen Mitchell's letter regarding Catholics, I was struck by one thought ] for a man who has chosen religion as his life's study, he has done very little to seek the true teachings of the Catholic religion.

For once and for all, Catholics do not worship Mary. Of all the misconceptions about Catholic belief and practice, this one is the most absurd. The worship of a person or thing outside of the Holy Trinity is commonly known as idolatry. Catholics honor Mary, the Mother of God, and try to exemplify her virtues. Catholics do feel that Mary is entitled to much admiration because of the simple fact that she was chosen by God to be the mother of his Son. No human, before or after, has been given such exaltation. "For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed" (Luke 1:48-49). What many non-Catholics mistake as adoration of Mary is simply a very profound love and veneration. Christ on earth showed us numerous occasions his honor of, and his love for, his blessed mother; can we strive to do no less than our Savior's example?

As for the practice of confessing our sins to a priest, Catholics do this because it is clearly stated in Sacred Scripture. To the Apostles, the first priests of his church, Christ said, "Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained," (John 20:21-23). Further, Catholics do confess their sins directly to God as Protestants do. Catholics are taught to make an act of contrition every day, to ask God to forgive them their sins of that day.

Rev. Mitchell, it is easy to criticize and to fear that which you do not understand. It is the lack of knowledge that drives prejudice. If you are truly interested in knowing why Catholics believe and practice as they do, then you will seek out Catholics who know and practice their faith and who can answer your questions. If you are not interested in truth, then you will shut your ears and continue to spout Protestant misconceptions of the Catholic faith, hoping that no one will question your integrity and seek out the truth for themselves.
