WCHS Frosh Say Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
The freshman class of Warsaw Community High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our students and the community for the overwhelming support we received for the "Cans Across the Community" food drive we completed earlier this month. The project was sponsored by the freshman class, but it was the support of all our students, staff, administrators, custodians and local merchants in combination that made this project a great example of teamwork! Our plan began when we placed shopping carts in each teacher's room as a visual reminder that there is a need in our community, and they also served as an incentive for students to bring in food to fill them. The carts turned out to be a great motivator.

Mrs. Shepherd, Mrs. Foster and Mr. LeMasters played an important role in the planning and organization of this year's food drive. Student council members from each class got on board and promoted the importance of this project to classmates, and teachers made it a priority for students too. Getting the food collected was only part of the story, however. Without the help of Mr. Bob Ferguson, of Ferguson Farms, we couldn't have gotten the carts to WCHS. Delivering the cartloads of food to Combined Community Services was another hurdle that was crossed with the help of Officer Morales, Mike Kendall and Mrs. Shepherd, who made sure we could make a safe trip from the high school to CCS as we wheeled the filled shopping carts to the food pantry.

We want to give a special thanks to Marsh, Owens, Lowe's and Wal-Mart for the generous use of their shopping carts. They were a great visual reminder for our students of how to get involved and make our community a better place to live for all of us. Your willingness to support our efforts proves once again, that successful teamwork in public education is a combined effort of students, parents, school personnel and community members, and that's a great lesson for all of us to remember.

The best part of the project is that we were able to help fill the shelves of Combined Community Services with over 9,000 items. Many families will benefit because of our combined efforts, and we can all feel good about that! Thanks again to everyone involved.

Good Play

Editor, Times-Union:
Last Friday night I had the pleasure of seeing a play put on by Celebration United Methodist Church called "Barred from the Hunter." This play was amazing. It was completely free and they served lots of refreshments. But the best thing about this night was the superb acting by all of the individuals in the play. As I understand it, this play was written and directed by one of the cast members who played "Tony." This play was about domestic abuse and dealt with all of these issues in a professional way that kept your interest. I told them afterward that they should contact the high school and see if they could put it on for them, as I think high school kids, especially girls, would get a lot out of it. Becky Moreno, the domestic abuse advocate, was there and said she had already thought of that. So the high school has a treat in store with this fine play. I have to admit, I wasn't interested in going that night, but went only because I was invited by one of the cast members who is a good friend. What a pleasant surprise!

Proud Warsaw Is Home

Editor, Times-Union:
We wish to express sincere thanks to the entire Warsaw/ Winona Lake community for all the cards, prayers, food, donations and support for our family after the devastating house fire we experienced on Jan. 9. We especially want to mention our wonderful Warsaw Fire Department, who responded promptly and efficiently handled all the after-fire details for us while we were away; our church family at Warsaw Community, who rallied together very quickly to help provide for our immediate needs; the Rusty and Denise Ritter family, who with great forethought and such a giving spirit set up a benefit fund for our family; and the entire Country Club neighborhood who truly gave of themselves in order to see that we were taken care of. There are no words to describe our deep gratitude and appreciation to everyone who helped us through this difficult time. We have truly experienced community and are very proud to call Warsaw home.

Club Appreciates Help

Letter to the Editor:
The weekend of April 1 and 2 the Warsaw Wrestling Club, which is a self-supporting extracurricular activity of the Warsaw Community Schools, hosted Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling tournaments. Greco-Roman and Freestyle are Olympic styles of wrestling as compared to Folkstyle wrestling, which is the style wrestled in school. We had over 500 wrestlers from all over the state and some from Michigan and Illinois in attendance.

Our tournament was very successful due to the efforts of many people. We had many experienced referees and pairing officials from schools here in northern Indiana volunteer to help us. We would also like to thank all of the wrestlers, their parents and families and coaches who worked the tournament and provided food. We would like to thank WCHS, Mr. Anson, the Athletic Department and custodians for helping us and allowing us to use the Tiger Den and facilities. We would like to thank the Kosciusko Association of Female Executives, some of the Edgewood seventh-grade cheerleaders and the high school gymnastics team and assistant coach for helping us during our tournament. They used this as a fund-raiser for their organizations. We would like to thank Jordan Foreman our EMT, and Melissa Timmerman, Sheriff reserve officer, for security.

Good Neighbors

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to take this opportunity to thank some good neighbors in Winona Lake. In March, I fell and broke my left leg. To the neighbor who responded - thank you - and to the employee of the town of Winona Lake - you know who you are - thank you.

I am recovering with physical therapy and receiving wonderful care at Millers' Merry Manor.

God bless.
