Fishing Isn't Murder

Editor, Times-Union:
Sorry PETA, fishing is not murder The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is another cult parading as a righteous cause. Speaking against the taking and eating of meat is nothing more than accusing the Lord God of Heaven of meanness and cruelty, and rejecting God's teaching.

The Lord God of Heaven appeared in human form to Abraham as recorded in the very first book of the Bible. Abraham hasted to prepare a meal for Him, which was beef, cow's milk, bread and butter. Who in their right mind would accuse God of being an accomplice in murder to partake of these normal foods?

The Lord Jesus Christ himself ate fish, and miraculously fed thousands of people with a few fishes. Was He evil for so doing? Jesus, the Son of God, also ate meat after his bodily resurrection from the dead, when He was in a glorified body like Christians will have in Heaven.

This life is not about whether or not a person eats meat. Our Creator had much more important things to do for us as well. God so loved the world that He sent His Son to the earth to shed His own blood, suffer and die. PETA followers take note, an innocent man voluntarily shed His own blood to abolish death in Hell for anyone who would trust in Him. Do you care about His pain, his slaughter? He cared for you.

At the same time, God is a righteous steward of His creation. He commands livestock owners to look well to the state of their herds and flocks. He instructs hunters not to waste that which they take in hunting, but to roast and eat it. These are just two of many such examples for mankind.

Human babies are murdered legally by government licensed doctors and the loudest public protests are not against abortion but against hunting and/or killing animals as though the animals were people. PETA wants to decide for other people what is "ethical," as in their name?

I choose to let God decide what is ethical. God instructed the early churches not to eat meat that was strangled, or with the blood, or offered in sacrifice to false gods. Those are the only valid restrictions on eating meat.

Sorry PETA, fishing is not murder. Your agenda is presumptuous, humanistic, purposeless and against the clear teachings of God.

Supports Jarrette

Editor, Times-Union:
Last week I read the Letter to the Editor written by Becky Moreno supporting the re-election of Judge Jarrette based on his efforts in the area of domestic violence. I also heard a radio advertisement aired by his opponent which suggested that Judge Jarrette should be replaced simply because he has served several terms.

Presumably Becky Moreno's support for Judge Jarrette is based upon her knowledge of his record in the area of domestic violence. She, as a victim's advocate, would be very knowledgeable in that area. Therefore, her opinion is one that I would consider when I vote. On the other hand, the radio commercial by the opponent seems to be a simple election ploy that suggests anything "old" is bad and should be replaced. I have no problem with change if there is a good reason, but change for the sake of change alone is pretty lame, especially if the current office holder is doing a good job. The logic presented in the radio ad totally discounts experience and prior good service to the community as factors to be considered by voters. I believe the message of the radio commercial is questionable.

I appreciate Becky's input from her area of expertise and would like to add my own. My husband and I are partners in two long-standing local businesses in the Warsaw and Mentone communities. We do know something about running a retail business. Two of the constant problems that we face are theft of merchandise and bad debts, both greatly affect the operation and profitability of our stores. Anyone who runs a retail business, large or small, is aware of these problems. During the years that Judge Jarrette has served our county, he has been very supportive of the merchants by consistently and firmly dealing with convicted offenders and attempting to provide restitution to the victims. I believe that Judge Jarrette's efforts have substantially reduced the number of repeat offenders.

As retailers we have an interest in the outcome of this election. We can support Judge Jarrette, who has a known "track record," or we can support the new guy, an unknown entity. As a merchant in this county, I'm supporting Judge Jarrette for relection.
