Superintendent

Editor, Times-Union:
I just wanted to let everyone know how disappointed I am with our school superintendent. Most of you may not be aware of the fact that Warsaw Community High School students are not allowed to participate in events held in "metropolitan areas" due to the terror alert orange status.

Although Saddam Hussein and his terrorist thug buddies have had very few victories, at least they can boast that they stopped the WCHS Percussion Ensemble from competing in the WGI world finals in Dayton, Ohio. I thought the president wanted all of us to continue with our lives to show those who threaten us that we will not be intimidated. Apparently the superintendent thinks Dayton is far too risky. I think that is ridiculous.

Sorry, WCHS Percussion Ensemble, I know this was what you were working all year for, and now it's gone because of one stupid decision. I would say, "Let's look forward to next year," but sadly the WGI world finals are in San Diego next year and the cost will most likely prevent us from making that trip. I'm looking forward to the "Drum Enchanted Evening" performance coming up soon, and I hope everyone can attend so you can see what Dayton missed.

Fribley Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
I have lived in this community all of my life. At 47 years old, I am still living here. These past few weeks I, along with thousands of others, mourned the loss of Lance Cpl. David Fribley. I didn't know David or his family personally, yet witnessing the funeral at the high school, driving in the procession to the cemetery and listening to the Marines' final words at the grave site made me feel that I've known David and his family for a long time. David and his family are the type that lead by example and truly care about everyone and everything they do. They are a model family that we all should emulate.

There have been a lot of patriotic events and other happenings in this community, however, none rival the way this local body of small-town people showed their honor and respect for a fallen hero who lost his young life in the act of duty, fighting for us and his country's freedom. The way our local people and officials took the time to get out of their cars, come out of their businesses, holding ribbons and flags, and veterans saluting the entire 300- to 400-car procession with the utmost respect, was incredible and awesome.

Thank you, David - may God bless you and your family. Fribleys, we love you and feel your loss with you. May all of us carry on the terrific attitude of the Fribleys. I really am proud to live in this community.

Liberals

Editor, Times-Union:
It never fails to amaze me how liberals will spin things around without the slightest knowledge of what a person means when he/she makes a statement. Gary, I'm sure most of us realize the point you were trying to make in Saturday's edition. Perhaps I can help the speed readers out there who like to take a few words of one's writings and make them into something they're not. What he meant was, when you speak your mind, [read: freedom of speech], other people can, and will, disagree. More than likely, some will even react accordingly. When you speak your mind on a national scale, such as celebrities do, sometimes people will stop giving them money, [read: buying their CDs, watching their movies].

This is not censorship, but my right to support, or not to support. It certainly has nothing to do with The Declaration of Independence or the Bill of Rights. Most of us can shoot our mouths off about anything we want, but if I was in the business of selling myself to America via music or movies, I think I would keep my opinions to myself. Gary was simply drawing a picture of how free speech sometimes has consequences for those with their hands out, he wasn't condoning anything.

Keep up the good work, Gary, the rest of us knew what you meant.
