Editor, Times-Union:I read the front-page article by Laurie Hahn declaring that Brent Wilcoxson has been charged with a conflict of interest due to his position as president of the town council while he is involved with the Winona Restoration project.
I consider this article irresponsible and one-sided, quoting "one Winona resident who asked not to be identified" and citing town residents "who readily admit" Wilcoxson's work "will improve the looks, if not the fortunes of Winona Lake," but the article states that "most Winona Lakers want to know ... whether it will improve Wilcoxson's financial status ] at taxpayer expense."
I have been a property owner in this town for 30 years and have heard the statement (and I agree) that Winona Lake was becoming the slum of Warsaw. Winona Hotel, once a beautiful landmark, was vacant and deteriorating, and the skating rink and The Lamp (formerly The Eskimo Inn) were in like condition. Many of the houses, built as summer cottages, were not upgraded to be year-round dwellings and were in sad condition, particularly the houses on Terrace Drive. And the swan pond had become a weed-filled marsh ] with no swans.
Now Terrace Drive is an area we're proud of. The Winona Hotel is being restored to its original grandeur, the swan pond is once again becoming a beauty spot, and many other exciting developments are under way.
I know Brent Wilcoxson to be a thoroughly honest citizen, who for years has had a passion to see Winona Lake restored as a place of beauty. In contrast to the attitude expressed in the Times-Union, I constantly hear people praising the good work Brent is accomplishing. How about giving some of us a shot at the front page?
Mary Thompson Winona Lake
Thanks To Wilcoxson
Editor, Times-Union:We don't know who the "most" people in Winona Lake are that Laurie Hahn talked to, but no one asked us for our opinion. To Brent Wilcoxson and Dane Miller, we want to be counted with those who say thanks for the leadership and vision and ability you have to help restore this town. We hope the big steps you are taking will inspire all of us to get busy and do our part to fix up and take care of our own areas so we can all enjoy and be proud of our town once again.

Editor, Times-Union:On Saturday, April 19, I had the pleasure to adjudicate an elementary choral music festival organized by Bob Dillon (music teacher at Warsaw's Lincoln and Harrison schools). The festival featured hundreds of students from all area elementary school choirs performing their own pieces and then combining for a few mass choir numbers at the end.
The festival was well planned, well executed and much appreciated by all who were in attendance. Special thanks go out to Mr. Dillon, Lincoln School, all of the many volunteers and chaperones, the directors and accompanists for the choirs, and the talented students who shared their voices in song.
It was a joy to see our young people participating in such a positive and rewarding activity. Thank you, choir students. You were great and I look forward to working with you when you are high school students.

Editor, Times-Union:I have felt compelled to point out that there are positive things going on at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School, since negative publicity the last couple months has made the school sound like a scary place. It is too easy for any amount of negative news to completely overshadow the good that is going on.
My family was surprised when we read the report from the last school board meeting. My children and their friends have not felt threatened or afraid at school. I am not suggesting that the meeting was not reported accurately, although the article did not seem complete as it ended mid-word and did not report the complete meeting. But I do think we need to keep in mind that the disciplinary problems involve a very small portion of the student body. I would also like to point out that the honor rolls were listed in the newspaper the same date (4-15-97) and involved a much higher percentage of children.
We have been in the Tippecanoe Valley school system for nine years. We have always been pleased with our children's teachers and have been impressed with the care and concern demonstrated for the student body by teachers and staff.
I have been guilty of not attending school board meetings and other school-related meetings scheduled in the evening. Our family time at home is so precious that I try not to schedule evening activities that do not include the whole family. I guess when we are busy following our children's activities and they do not have problems at school, we assume a passive role. But for the record, we support our school and school board, and thank them for the educational opportunities with which our children have been blessed.

KABS Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:We the people speak!
In appreciation of our KABS service and Happy Wanderer bus service. The drivers are very courteous and thoughtful of their passengers.
We would not be able to go anywhere in the city of Warsaw without their service. Everyone is eligible to ride. It's very reasonable.
