Republican Disrespect

Editor, Times-Union:
I am a Warsaw native and it appears to me that some of the elected and appointed leaders of the Republican Party have committed the most unthinkable and disrespectful act I have ever witnessed by party and elected officials.

They have disgraced themselves and the Republican Party by ignoring a three-man race for sheriff in the May 2 Republican primary and are publicly supporting one of three candidates for this office. These elected party officials have slapped Lou Brown and Rocky Goshert in the face by their actions. To name a few: Mayor Ernie Wiggins, councilmen Charlie Smith, Jerry Patterson, Joe Thallemer, Bob Morrison, Bill Rhoades and Jeff Grose, along with city attorney Mike Valentine and city Clerk-Treasurer Elaine Call. They have held meetings in the privacy of their homes for the election of Lou and Rocky's opponent, Sam Whitaker.

Lou and Rocky have equal, if not better, credentials and integrity than their opponent. In fact, Sam doesn't even have a listed home phone number and both Lou and Rocky do. Further, on Sam's campaign literature, one can not find a listed phone number to contact him. You tell me who has the best interest of the public in mind.

The mayor of Warsaw has the privilege to appoint chief of police for the city of Warsaw, but it appears now that he is trying to appoint the county sheriff with his involvement in this campaign. I have never seen more political disrespect in my entire life. This is an unprecedented move to save a known flawed candidate, and I can see future strained relations among elected officials. To my knowledge, this has not been done in the history of the Republican Party and I think it is indeed sad.

In closing, I, along with many others in the Republican Party and community people I have spoken with, would expect a higher standard from those in these appointed and public elected positions.

I trust the voters will realize that they have the power by their vote in the upcoming May 2 primary. That they themselves, and not a politically motivated group of people, will decide who will best serve the public's best interest as the next Kosciusko County sheriff.

'Rocky' For Sheriff

Editor, Times-Union:
I have received some good-natured kidding as to why I, as a former prosecutor, was omitted in the recent letter of the present and a few previous prosecuting attorneys recommending Mr. Whitaker for sheriff. Most certainly, I understand why some of those attorneys would write the letter. Mr. Whitaker works for the present prosecutor. Two of those signing as former prosecutors are partners in the law firm that represents the city of Warsaw where Mr. Whitaker's wife works as human resource director and whose city mayor is an officer of Mr. Whitaker's campaign committee.

My omission as a former prosecutor is likewise understandable. As a saying goes, "old prosecutors are never forgotten - they just lose their appeal."

Seriously, the reason I was not asked to join the letter is that I strongly support "Rocky" Goshert for sheriff, as I believe he is the best qualified and experienced candidate for sheriff. I have known him ever since his youth when he and his family lived in my neighborhood. His honesty and integrity is above approach. His higher education affords him the ability to manage the business affairs of sheriff. He has very extensive law enforcement experience and training as an Indiana State Trooper, as well as working as a deputy sheriff in our county during recent years.

We had many very good sheriffs in the past, but I do not believe this county has ever had the opportunity to elect a sheriff with qualifications and experience any better than those possessed by "Rocky."

When a person votes in this sheriff's primary election, I hope such is done on the basis of who is the most qualified and will best serve our county and not what I or any other former or present prosecutor might say.

Supports Whitaker

Editor, Times-Union:
There is no such thing as a level playing field in the world of competition. Voters want a candidate that rises above the rest and that has the experience, qualification and vision to make even better improvements upon the office which they seek. We want a winner, who wins with hard work, integrity and civility.

Voters love to see a solid campaign in which the candidates concentrate on the office sought. Sam Whitaker has gone the extra distance to run an excellent campaign for sheriff. Sam Whitaker has used 25 years of dedicated service to prepare himself for the office of sheriff, having participated in every division within the sheriff's office. Sam Whitaker has led and inspired the officers under his direct supervision.

May 2 is an important date as your vote will determine your sheriff. Sam Whitaker a lifelong resident and career county police officer. He is devoted to the protection of you, your family and this county. He will serve us well as sheriff.

Whitaker For Sheriff

Editor, Times-Union:
May 2 is primary election day in Kosciusko County.

Over the years we have traditionally looked at candidate qualifications when we were deciding who would get our vote in the Republican primary. In the sheriff's race this year, we believe Sam Whitaker has the management skills, knowledge and outstanding experience in law enforcement to lead the department with integrity and honesty. We plan to vote for Sam Whitaker on May 2 and ask that you consider casting your vote for him, also.

Do not forget - a new law this year requires identification that includes your photo when you sign in to vote!
