Level Playing Field

Editor, Times-Union:
Former Governor Otis R. "Doc" Bowen taught me a cardinal principle of public service. When seeking election, he said that one's candidacy should always be just what it appears to be.

He said this allows the voters an opportunity to make an informed decision when going to the polls on who best would serve their interests.

I am moved to write this letter in that in elections today, all too often we see the presence of the lack of a level playing field. It is prevalent in many national and state elections, and I am becoming aware this is happening with our local upcoming May 2 primary election for the office of sheriff. This concerns me as everyone, most importantly the voters, deserves a level playing field.

A number of local community people are contacting me, seeing my comments on this, and to save repeating myself I want to publicly respond.

My comments:
n An "Ever-Growing List of Supporters" is being circulated and shown to prospective voters, and at some meetings that lists some 301 names of supporters of one candidate. This list contains names of individuals who told me they question the way in which they got on the list, for whatever reason. Their concern is their name is being circulated in support of the candidate and they do not plan to vote for this candidate.

n There appears to be a large amount of money being spent on this election and they wanted to know my feelings on this. My response is that money alone doesn't win elections. There is no question that it helps, but a candidate is what truly wins an election if there is a level playing field. We have three qualified candidates running for the office of sheriff, and, of course, we all trust qualifications, abilities and character are paramount in deciding this May 2 primary election.

n A supporter of one candidate went so far as to write a critical letter to a sponsoring organization allowing one of the candidates to appear and have a "fair chance." Why would one do this? It goes against fairness and opportunity for a level playing field and that serves no one's best interests.

I encourage all voters to learn as much as they can about our candidates. Then go to the polls on May 2, and exercise one's right to vote.

My best wishes to all candidates.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
