Puppy Mills
Editor, Times-Union:Today in school we found out that most puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. Puppy mills only breed dogs to make money. They don't treat the dogs well. They don't feed them properly. They don't give them enough attention or medical care and they are not kept in clean cages.
Instead of buying from pet stores, please go to your local animal shelter to get a pet. Millions of dogs are in animal shelters because they have no homes. Yet puppy mill owners keep producing about 400,000 puppies a year.

Basketball Compromise
Editor, Times-Union:The last two years of the class basketball trial have proven very divisive among our basketball community. While some small schools have enjoyed a new found optimism and excitement in their communities, others have felt a sense of regret at the loss of tourney tradition.
The Hickory Compromise is a possible solution to this heated debate. Simply stated, this proposal allows for class sectionals and regionals just as they are now, with one exception. The regional round would revert to its traditional four team three game Saturday format.
Following this phase we would have 16 regional winners, 4 from each class. These 16 teams would then combine and participate in another draw. The entire state would then focus its attention on this true sweet 16 as they head to Indianapolis for a 15 game 4 day winner take all state finals.
The Hickory Compromise attempts to find some middle ground that both class and traditional format advocates can live with. It allows for small school advancement in the tourney and still crowns a single state champion. The ongoing class debate has ripped apart our basketball community. This proposal seeks to bring it back together.
