Ulshafer Memorial
Editor, Times-Union:I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated to the Melissa Kay Ulshafer Memorial Fund. Because of your generosity, it was a great success!
On April 14 the batting cage will be dedicated in loving memory of Missy. The dedication will take place at the first Whitko girls softball game at 4:30 p.m., at the high school field, located where the S.W. Middle School used to stand. While no public ceremony is planned we hope you will plan to attend the dedication.
I would like to say a very special thank you to my parents, Jack and Kathy Ulshafer, for having a dream, and for allowing myself and Missy's family and friends to help make that dream come true.
Although Missy's been gone 12 years, all of you have shown that it's never to late to honor her memory. Not only will she be remembered for years to come, but the community has a new facility to be used for many years as well. Thank you all for helping to make a dream a reality.

Editor, Times-Union:The recent newsletter from Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners Inc., signed by the president, Gary Calhoun, is in worst possible taste!
He, Calhoun, writes one of the reasons we should all be proud to be members of LTPO is because there are "Landing Directors," plus a membership list so "we" all know who "that rich SOB is who built that monstrosity!"
Thanks, but no thanks, Gary. I don't need you or LTPO!

Successful Surgery
Editor, Times-Union:My mother, Gen Armey, has just returned home and is recuperating from quadruple bypass surgery.
Although I know this was all a team effort, I would like to send a special thanks to Dr. Dana Coates.
Mom has had high blood pressure ever since I can remember but one day about a month and a half ago something felt different. She called Dr. Coates and he told her to come right over. He took the time to really check her over right.
He found she had an artery in her neck that turned out to be 83 percent blocked.
To make a long story short, they have to check your heart for blockage before they will operate on your neck. It turned out Mom had four major blockages in her heart ranging from 50 percent to 90 percent. Doctors said she would probably have a major heart attack in less than three months and be dead in five years if she didn't have the surgery.
It's only been 2-1/2 years since my family lost my dad to cancer. He was only 62. Mom is only 64 and thanks to Dr. Coates, she will be with us for a long time yet.
Mom's surgery went like a textbook operation. The surgeons said she made them look good. She had surgery on Friday, was walking around the ICU on Saturday and came home on Tuesday.
Once again I want to acknowledge that this was a team effort and I want to thank all the doctors and nurses at the Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
But I especially want to make sure Dr. Coates gets the credit he deserves for taking the time to diagnose Mom's condition and give us more time with "our world's best mom."

Editor, Times-Union:My name is Johnny Grimmett, my grandfather is Charles Cain, he is helping Jeff (Bronsing) out. I'm not doing this because somebody told me to but because I think you should hear what I know about Jeff. It was last summer, I had got a scooter, I didn't know how old you had to be to drive one. So my neighbor and me was supposed to go to the Chapman Lake Marina from Suburban Acres but she talked me into going to Oswego to a marina she knew.
On our way back we had an accident that I don't like to talk about, but later on she came home from the hospital with several areas with stitches and road rash all over her, from her knees to her forehead. But before that I had went to my house where Jeff came and asked what happened. He talked to my dad, my grandmother, and me very calmly and without yelling tried calming me down. He acted like more officers should be. I'm not saying I got off easy - he told me how old you had to be and the laws that come with being responsible while driving a scooter. The girl that was in the accident was old enough to drive a scooter but did not have a helmet on.
I think that if all or more officers acted to youths like he did that there wouldn't be so much youth crime going on. I'm not saying he should be easy on everyone but should only use enough force without overdoing. I think that when somebody uses too much force that it makes kids or teenagers want to rebel and doesn't get as much stuff through as you do with trying to find out what the problem is. Jeff has really helped me out and taught me a lesson that there's always a price to pay no matter what, and know what you're doing before you do it. That means if my friends are out riding their scooters it doesn't mean I should.

IRS
Editor, Times-Union:We've read and heard a lot about the IRS lately, and their "people problems." No wonder they have problems! Recently I wrote to the Cincinnati office for some information relative to KLVA's exempt tax status. Here, in part, is the answer I received:
"Correspondence is assigned and answered in the order in which it is received. Currently our inventory is at a level that would suggest it will be at least 90 days before your correspondence is assigned for response."
This, of course, was a form "letter" run off on a copier - no signature, just "Customer Service Unit" typewritten at the bottom. My name, KLVA's name, address and our "Control Number" were filled in by hand.
Ninety days ... three months to just assign my letter for response? How long after that before someone actually gets around to responding? Oh well, I didn't really want to know anyway!

Editor, Times-Union:Having read Mr. Tony Miller's most recent attack on the County Commissioners which made serious allegations of graft and corruption, I ask Mr. Miller to give the rest of us common knaves some specifics. If Mr. Miller has facts, I wish he would share them as freely as he shares his inflammatory allegations and smears.
A friend of mine once told me that if I didn't have pictures, I shouldn't come talkin' in his ear. Mr. Miller, you have been talkin' in my ear for a long time. I do hope you have facts.
