Basketball

Editor, Times-Union:
The ISHAA executive council will meet on April 30 to take a hard, depressing look at the attendance and revenue figures since the last single-class basketball tournaments in 1997. The Indianapolis Star reports, "Attendance had been declining, but the steady decline turned into a free-fall after the final single-class tournaments in 1997. Since then, boys attendance for all tourney rounds dropped from 786,024 to 387,710 last year - a decline of 50.1 percent. Total profit to the ISHAA, after all expenditures and payments to participating schools, fell during that period from $924,017 to $475,734 - a slide of 48.6 percent."

The Star article indicated the Wednesday regional game would likely be changed due to some lengthy traveling distances required. Also to be considered is going to two classes instead of the current four.

These statistics suggest that the current system allowing four champions, etc., was at the expense of fan interest, lack of natural rivalries, low attendance and decreased revenue for the ISHAA and local school systems.

I believe going to two classes will only create more chaos. Perhaps it is to late to close the barn door after the horse has left the barn and maybe we need to retain the four-class system and live with the results. Any comments?

Daylight Saving

Editor, Times-Union:
On March 17, Gary Gerard had an article on Daylight-Saving Time. I wonder if you know in what time zone we in Indiana are supposed to be in. In the U.S. we have four time zones. If I remember correctly, we are in the Central Time Zone.

In 1974, Daylight-Saving Time lasted 10 months, 1975-eight months, rather than the normal six months. Also I remember it was put on the election ballot for a vote to keep changing back and forth or stay on Daylight-Saving Time permanently. The majority of voters voted to stay on Daylight-Saving Time the year around. Now you want to change for another hour faster. Why? Perhaps all of the U.S. should be on one time zone for your satisfaction. You mention that we are stupid, I wonder if you aren't referring to the wrong person.

I can give you a good idea on how you can solve your problem. Go to work one or two hours earlier so you can get off earlier in the afternoon. Then you can do whatever you want, but let the time alone for the majority of us people.

The people who live close to the time zone lines, that is their problem. Lines should not be moved to please them. I didn't set up the time zones.

Rave Parties

Editor, Times-Union:
Watching a "Dateline" investigation concerning Rave parties and then being invited to one by a former coworker sparked my curiosity surrounding the popular Rave wave. Rave parties have recently made newspaper headlines due to the amount of illegal drugs at such events. However, Rave parties actually began as a method of using alternative music and social dancing to encourage individuals to love one another. Personally, I believe it is impossible for this method to be successful in spreading love because real love only comes from God, and love can't be attained through human measures.

According to "House Music and Planetary Healing," an article written by a Rave participant, a Rave party will only be successful if each person in attendance gives off positive vibes. This is done while dancing with others. Each person must trust those with whom they are dancing. In return, fellow dancers will show love, and everyone in the group will feel accepted. The idea is that after feeling love at a Rave party, individuals will return home and show love toward others. As a Christian, I believe positive vibes cannot generate love. Love only comes from God.

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love," I John 4:7-8 NIV.

"House Music and Planetary Healing" also emphasizes that it's an individual decision whether or not to express positive vibes. The responsibility of showing love toward the other dancers rests solely on the individual. Although that may be the practice, I find it much easier to do certain things with help. I believe that God is there to help in every circumstance, especially when personal strength runs out.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing," John 15:5 NIV.

To argue, one might say that a Rave party is similar to a church service. There's music (and depending upon the denomination) there's movement, and those in attendance feel love towards each other. I've experienced that many times. However, I've felt love toward another person at church because I first expressed my love for God. Again, only God enables a person to genuinely love someone else.

Possibly the greatest combat against the struggles in our society is to show more love toward one another. However, Rave parties can't make this happen because love only comes from God, and love can't be attained through human measures. I challenge the Rave wave to stop trying to give off positive energies and begin focusing those thoughts toward a God who loves them more than they could ever love each other.

Zimmer Road

Editor, Times-Union:
Re: R.D. Krebs letter on 3/22/01

Mr. Krebs should get his facts straight before he writes a letter to the editor.

The name of the road is not 225W. It is North Zimmer Road and has been for over four years now. I know as I have lived on it for over 40 years.

We do not want or need any more traffic as we already have Zimmer's, Kimble Glass, R.R. Donnelley's, Lewis Salvage, etc. Plus all that, we have semis galore and other large trucks. Zimmer Road is known as the truck bypass. By the way, 80 percent of the semis and trucks do not make deliveries in Warsaw. There is a city ordinance I understand against being on city streets. It is in the city limits from Zimmer's to Ind. 25 but no one seems to do anything about it.

Finally, there is not even a Warsaw map that I'm aware of that has this road's name correct.
