Percussion Ensemble

Editor, Times-Union:
CONGRATULATIONS to the Concert World Class, Indiana State CHAMPION Warsaw High School Percussion Ensemble! I have heard so much about your extraordinary level of performance this year. I was not able to hear you until the state finals. Your performance at the Indiana Percussion Association State Finals Saturday was beyond exhilarating. It is hard for a single person to achieve perfection, it is even harder for a group of 16 individuals to achieve it at the same time. Congratulations on winning the state championship!

Leesburg Field Trip

Editor, Times-Union:
On Wednesday, March 21, 2001, the Leesburg fourth-graders went on a field trip to the Indiana statehouse and the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis.

What an experience for our kids! I especially want to thank Representative Wolkins and Senator Adams for taking the time out of their busy schedules to visit with us and answer questions.

As a 40-year-old mom along for the ride (school bus - yikes) let me encourage all ofyou to take the time to visit these two places in the near future. Spring break is right around the corner.

Last but not least many thanks to our Leesburg fourth-grade teachers, Mrs. Kinsey, Mrs. Krevinghaus, Mrs. Smith and Miss Sapp, for their time and commitment to our fourth-graders.

What a great memory-making day!

Against Daylight Saving Time

Editor, Times-Union:
Ah, yes, the marvel of DST. According to recent radio ads I've heard, by simply tampering with the clock twice a year all our problems will vanish. Jobs will come pouring in, crime will go down, lives will be saved and the airlines will probably even run on time.

But wait, is there trouble in paradise? As it now stands, Illinois is always one hour behind Ohio and Michigan. So regardless of what Indiana does ,we will always be one hour different than a neighboring state. Which means the people on one side or the other of Indiana will be unhappy. Has a familiar ring to it, doesn't it?

For 25 years I traveled northern Indiana, eastern Illinois and southern Michigan, with no service problems.

Maybe someone should draw Mr. Gerard a picture. There are a lot more people who get up at 4:30 or 5 a.m. to be to work at 6 who probably aren't interested in hearing boats, jet skis or the neighbors' kids screaming until 11 p.m.

As for Scott Jones' TechNet Indiana and the other handful of saviors of mankind who happen to have the ear of the media, how can it matter what time it is in Indiana when more and more of the things we use and buy are made in China or Mexico? Besides, the stock market would suggest Scott Jones and his high-tech friends have more serious problems than DAYLIGHT-SAVING TIME.

Supports Daylight Saving Time

Editor, Times-Union:
I must reply to Misters Webb and Krebs. I am a courier and make many deliveries to the Chicago area. So the time change affects me a lot. Many times I need the extra hours to get to my destination. Have you been caught up in those horrendous traffic jams lately? And have you ever had to sleep in your vehicle overnight because you didn't get there by closing time? Don't tell me to leave earlier. I go when the customer is ready and not before. You say you like Chicago time so you don't want to change. Unless you change with them, you have to change your thinking twice a year. I was an usher at a wedding not long ago, and an elderly couple missed the wedding because of the constant changing of time. If we are going to be an hour ahead of Chicago, let's be that way the whole year and not have to change our thinking every 6 months. Mr. Krebs - your using drugs and driving drunk is not relevant to DST. Wouldn't we be in a mix-up if some stores used DST and others didn't? Go ahead and milk your cows on slow time. I don't care and I'm sure the cows don't mind either. I need the extra hour in the evenings to get my outside work done. You can't do 90 percent of the outside work in the morning, and who needs daylight at 4:45 in the morning. There isn't enough daylight hours to get all that has to be done as it is! We need to stay in sinc with the rest of the country. Then we won't have to keep changing our ratio with the people around us every 6 months. Who is doing the changing anyway? Come on, guys. Do the right thing. Or do you like looking stupid to the rest of country!?

Valley Baseball

Editor, Times-Union:
The TVHS baseball players and parents would like to thank all of the parents and kids who came out to support our Valley Baseball Fun Night. We would also like to thank East of Chicago Pizza for doing a great job keeping us ahead on pizzas. We had a blast and we hope all of the kids did too!

Against Daylight Saving Time

Editor, Times-Union:
Most times I agree with you on your Saturday morning articles, but this one on DST set me off. You want Indiana to get in sync with the rest of the country. Well Indiana got out of sync when one fall we didn't return to CST some years back when we had been on CDT for the summer. I said then that there would be a day when we would have a push for EDT as we are having right now.

I have several reasons for feeling the way I do and they are valid.

When we were on CST in the winter we never had school delays because of the weather. Yes we had school closing because of the weather. When you have school delays why don't the schools extend the school day two hours? You would have the biggest uproar you ever heard of from the teachers and parents. Did you ever figure how much time is lost in the students' education because of school delays? In this situation the student is the loser.

You mentioned in your article that some "arguments are all pap."

If you went back to CST the children wouldn't have to be out until daylight. In my school days as my sisters and I boarded the bus the sun was just up and we were the first on. Also, the driver could see.

From your article, I seriously doubt if you understand all that is involved with farming and time. If the "Good Lord" would not give us dew to fall on the cut hay or standing grain at night, it sure would help. We have to wait until the sun dries out the crop before you can start to bale hay or combine wheat. With EDT you may not be able to do much until 2:30 or 3. Several years ago we had problems with teen-age boys that would quit helping in stacking the bales in the mow because they had to go play ball with their teammates, thus it could be worse with EDT.

We have to have lines someplace across this United States, so let's leave it alone and live with it. If you don't like it, maybe the best thing to do is move. Also, business-wise make your adjustments and go on.

Finally, you mention your reason for being in favor of DST is "selfishness." You hit the nail on the head. Have you tried fishing or taking a morning walk in the earlier morning hours? It would be cooler than in the evening. Our problem is that we have become too affluent in this country and we want our pleasures when we want them and thus we move the clock up to reach our selfish goals!

Bond Discrepancy

Editor, Times-Union:
I don't ever remember this question being answered in your column before, so I'll be the first to ask. Why is it that some who are arrested for driving under the influence get their bond set at $3,000 and then sometimes I see the same offense and the bond is $500? It's ONE offense and should be treated as such. ONE bond. Does it matter who you are? Because I for one happen to know a first-time offender who got $3,000 bond. And she NEVER even had a speeding ticket under her belt. The only offense she had was a $2 parking ticket. When my "friend" got pulled over, she wasn't speeding, swerving or driving irratically. She had a headlight out. A simple headlight out. I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering the answer to this question. Come on Kosciusko County, be fair about it!

Overtaxed

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to congratulate Mr. Gerard for getting things right in his Saturday "News Views" commentary. It was well said and completely true. We all have been overtaxed! Every soul that pays taxes to the federal government. It doesn't matter if you make $15,000 or $15 million. I happen to be closer to the $15k and I recognize that the person who makes $15 million is going to reinvest his tax cut back into the economy and create jobs for people like me giving me more money above and beyond the tax cut I'll get in my bracket.

Government spending rises every year and it's mostly wastes to boost their fragile egos and dreams for re-election. There will be a $5 trillion surplus and it's too much to give us $1.6 trillion of it. We should be infuriated that we aren't getting it all! If you go to Wal-Mart and they only give you $1 change when you deserve $5 you'll be pretty upset and this is the same situation.

As for a trigger, I'm fully opposed. If there were an emergency situation all Congress has to do is raise taxes then. The trigger is an excuse so they wouldn't have to vote on raising taxes. However, there is one trigger I would be for. The Kennedy and Reagan tax cuts lowered taxes dramatically yet revenues went up! How about if the revenues exceed the $5 trillion surplus level they refund that money to us too?

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to voice my opinion. Please contact your representatives and let them know you've been over taxed!

Grandpa's Picture

Editor, Times-Union:
I am a lifelong Warsaw area resident and would like to thank you for the wonderful coverage of the varied aspects of life in Kosciusko County. The photo on the March 14 insert is especially dear to me because the farmer pictured on the front page is my grandfather. We saw the picture when it originally ran last summer as a small photo on the front page. Mr. Neiter listed an address where the picture was taken but apparently didn't speak with the subject. Grandpa was really tickled and even bragged about being on the front page of the paper at a family reunion! I especially wanted to let you know how interesting the picture is, because I am sure none of your staff realizes that when it was taken Grandpa was 93 years young! He is still very active, and independent. He will celebrate his 94th birthday on March 27th. He has lived his entire life in the Bremen, Nappanee area. Thank you again.

KEMRAD Service

Editor, Times-Union:
There was a nice article in the paper March 20, when I, Wallace Huffman, received a City of Warsaw Citizens Award from Mayor Ernie Wiggins and Police Chief Steven Foster, for my many years of service in KEMRAD. I wish to correct an error, I certainly do have age, but not 62 years of service. I have been a member of KEMRAD since 1962 or 1963, which does give me 38 or 39 years of service in KEMRAD. Thanks to all of you for the cards received.
