Trashy Story

Editor, Times-Union:
Why must you carry such a story as the trash you carried last night, 3/7/00, on page 11B? First it was carried under the Education section, then under a headline the size of front page news.

Now go to page 8B and check out the coverage given the Honor Roll students. The print is so small most people, myself included, could hardly read the names of those proud students.

Please leave the trash in the dumpster and make your publication one we will all enjoy.

Editor, Times-Union:
Thank you for the terrific job you did covering the Triton girls basketball team. It will be an experience they will never forget. You did a terrific job with stories, pictures, etc.

Break-Ins

Editor, Times-Union:
I have never written a letter to the editor, but I feel compelled to do so at this time.

Sometime during the week of March 6, Our Father's House reported someone trying to break into the facility. What a travesty! First someone steals a cash box and now someone tried to break in. These people should be ashamed of themselves.

I know Mr. and Mrs. Morgan personally and believe with all my heart that if these people needed something all they had to do is ask. Mrs. Morgan will do anything to either help you or find someone that can help you out in your time of need. She has a heart of gold. I know because when I worked at Owen's Supermarket several years ago, I was extremely sick but still had to work. Mrs. Morgan came in one evening and bought me cans of orange juice and grape juice, told me to go home and drink them and take care of myself. She didn't have to do that but that's the kind of person she is.

As a request to all citizens, please respect this facility and these kind, generous people - the Morgans. If you need something, just ask, don't disrespect their hard work and caring hearts.

'Class' Basketball

Editor, Times-Union:
I'm writing to comment on the Valley/West Lafayette basketball game. First, congratulations to the Valley team for a great victory at the regional.

Second, I would like to say to the West Lafayette team ... it took a lot of guts, courage and class for their seniors to come out of the locker room, after being beat by Valley, to congratulate the Valley team and fans. Hats off to your boys and your coaching staff for a class act.

Final comment ... Valley team, regardless of the rest of our season, you are a class outfit. VALLEY ALL THE WAY!

Abandoned Pups

Editor, Times-Union:
Yesterday, March 12, we discovered that someone had dumped out five pups. We live at the edge of town, they were in our yard when we got up. They are probably 3-1/2 or 4 months old and they will be large dogs as they are already pretty big and have big feet.

We fed them, knowing that someone would call animal control. Sure enough a law officer came to our door at noon on Monday asking if the pups were ours. Animal control was with him. They are beautiful pups. They caught three of them. The other two they couldn't catch.

They look like there is a lot of Lab in them - three black short hair and one black long hair. The other looked as if it might be part collie - brown, long hair.

Someone should be very proud of themselves knowing that these happy, bouncing, trusting pups will probably be put to sleep. I've shed a lot of tears for these animals and others that are mistreated and put to sleep through no fault of theirs.

I am sure that what the people spent to feed these pups was more than what it would have cost to have the dog spayed so there wouldn't be any unwanted pups.

It is probably too late to save these pups that were taken to Rochester. Hopefully someone might want them so their lives may be saved. We already have two dogs. One that was saved in Rochester.

Phone Service

Editor, Times-Union:
This is a letter to make sure the general public knows a few things about their phone service. This fall my father went to California for the winter. We called Sprint and had his phone put on vacation rate. The vacation rate was approximately $12 a month. Low and Behold this month's bill comes and it is for $32. A $20 difference from last month. I called and inquired why the bill had such a large increase. They explained that because he had AT&T long distance, they had billed him the additonal amount. They said he should have called AT&T to cancel his long distance while he was gone. I asked why they had not told us this when I placed the vacation order and the answer was they were unaware that this was happening. I then called AT&T to see what could be done. They told me about a wonderful calling plan that my father could use, and also assured me we would receive the money back. After talking to several people they then connected me with a billing agent who advised me there would be no refund, that it was Sprint's job to advise us of this. The end result, $20 spent, and of course no more AT&T long distance service for us. But I'm not letting Sprint off the hook either. The fact is folks, if you have a complaint there is no one local to go to anymore. We are talking to people in many different states. We mysteriously had our business phone left out of the phone book last year. These things do happen, and I certainly understand it. But to get the problem solved (somehow our line was switched to a residence from a business after 18 years) I had to talk to many people in many different states. Never once could I speak to a local representative. Today, I have been on the phone for over two hours trying to solve what should have been a simple problem. The problem is no one will say anything is their fault. We have all stood by and let this happen. Let's start complaining we need some local support, some real live people to talk to when we have a problem. Write your telephone company. All we want is service.

Prayers Needed

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing this to all the churches and all the Christians in this community (we are not begging). My husband and I would like each one of you to pray for us if you will please.

Let me try to explain it to you. We are facing a financial situation for the next three months. That's when my husband should receive his Social Security again. Until then, we'll have no income at all. I'm ill and unable to work. He is disabled and unable to find any work. So if you will pray for us or write to us, thank you very much. Our address is 112 N. Scott, Warsaw, IN 46580. We appreciate your support and your prayers.

The Prayer

Editor, Times-Union:
When minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess that ...

"We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism;

"We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism;

"We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle;

"We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;

"We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare;

"We have killed our unborn and called it choice;

"We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable;

"We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem;

"We have abused power and called it politics;

"We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition;

"We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression;

"We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

"Search us, oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center of Your will. We ask it in the names of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen."

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In six short weeks, Central Christian Church, where the Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea.

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on "The Rest of the Story" on the radio and received a larger response to the program than any other he has ever aired.

With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called one nation under God.

Taxes

Editor, Times-Union:
Listen up local,state and federal governments, I think you need to take taxpayers' money and pay the oil and gas companies to hold prices down at $1 per gallon always, then come up with a hidden tax to have the taxpayers pay, to take care of that. Because it is very obvious that the American people would rather pay higher taxes than higher gasoline prices. If this is not true, then why hasn't two hundred and seventy millon people marched on Washington, D.C., to protest higher taxes. PSSST, Have a nice day.

Congrats To Hoop Teams

Editor, Times-Union:
Congratulations to the Triton Girls State Champions, the Warsaw, Tippecanoe Valley and Triton Boys Regional Champions. There were also six college teams from Indiana selected for the NCAA tournament, which has to be a record. Hats off to Indiana, Purdue, Ball State, Butler, Indiana State and Valparaiso.

Regarding the allegations made by Neil Reed against Bob Knight, which supposedly happened three years ago, could not be more untimely. What does he expect to gain at this point? The media loves to report all of the negative stories concerning Bob Knight but you never hear about all of the good things he has done. He is called the Emperor of Indiana University by some people but regardless of your position you still have to answer to somebody.

Regardless of what happens in the Boys Semi-State and the NCAA tournament it has been a very good year for basketball in Indiana.

Missing Dog

Editor, Times-Union:
On Saturday, March 4, on 325 East near Willies Eastridge Estates in Warsaw, our family pet, a 12-year -old black male shihtzu named Sammy wandered off our property.ÊWe had always been careful to make sure this would not happen.ÊWe searched for several hours and it was apparent to us that we would not find him. We found out from a neighbor later that day that a woman in a van found him and attempted to locate his owners. Unfortunately, we did not get the opportunity to talk with this woman.

We assumed the woman took our dog to her home and awaited an advertisement or maybe she had taken him to the animal shelter. ÊBut, we have kept in contact with the Kosciusko County Animal Shelter and they said they had not heard from anyone about Sammy and that they would call us if he would happen to show up. ÊAlso, we put an advertisement in the Times-Union and again, nothing.

It has now been two weeks and we have no information on his whereabouts.ÊWe can only assume that the woman and her family grew attached to Sammy and decided to keep him. We hope that we are correct in thinking this is what happened. The thought of him suffering an awful death from being hit by a car or some other violent or agonizing tragedy is devastating for our family to think about.

So, to the woman in the van, we understand if you decided to keep Sammy. Even if you have him for awhile and decide that you no longer want him we will have no hard feelings toward you if you want to give him back to us.

Sammy has been a very lovable dog and people can become attached to him easily.ÊBut we miss him very much and wish he had not disappeared from our home.ÊHe has been a part of our lives for 12 years. We have had him since he was eight weeks old and the thought of not knowing if he is dead or alive has been difficult for our family to deal with.

If you have him and would like to give him back you can contact us at 219-269-1502 or contact the Kosciusko County Animal Shelter at 267-3008, located on 100 South in Warsaw.ÊBut, if you have decided to keep him as your pet we feel that we owe it to Sammy to share some important information about him with you. He is a full blooded shihtzu and is up to date on all shots including rabies.ÊRecently, he has had health problems and has been on a restricted diet. On the advice of his veterinarian he should not have any dairy products.ÊHe is housebroken, although he is getting older and has had some accidents. Sammy is a great pet. There are two things he loves to play with the most, socks and balls.ÊIf there are socks laying around the house be sure Sammy will find them and bring them to you for you to throw so he can fetch them for you. ÊHe also loves chasing balls and rolling them around. But, Sammy is not always safe to play with. If a child or an adult should get close to his face he could potentially bite them.ÊPlease be especially careful around him until he knows you better because he may bite you.

We are saddened that our relationship with Sammy has possibly come to an end. We didn't even get a chance to say good-bye to him. ÊWe wish that we could have him back but realize that may never happen. So our family would like to say to the woman in the van, we hope that you are giving him a loving home and please take care of him. ÊÊÊ
