Pierceton
Editor, Times-Union:The Pierceton Town Council would like to thank everyone that attended our public hearing last Monday evening (3-8-04). We were very happy with the number of people and also the many positive comments.
We would also like to thank the people that have written letters supporting this project. If you were unable to attend our hearing and would like to help the town receive a grant to help keep sewer rates to a minimum, address your letters to the Indiana Department of Commerce. These letters can be given to any council members or dropped off at the clerk's office.
Once again, thank you. It is nice to be part of such a great community.

Repent
Editor, Times-Union:Many strange things happen in our great nation, but perhaps one of the strangest is occurring at this time across the land. "The Passion of the Christ" has taken the nation by a storm in the past month. Thousands of men, women and older children are arriving at the local theaters to watch a good representation of one of the greatest events in all of history: the sacrificial death of the son of God, Jesus Christ, upon a cruel Roman cross. What strikes me as strange is the timing, and the fact that even this movie about the last few hours of Jesus' life will not affect the morals and ethics of America very much.
Here is a brief recollection of this month's recent stories. A mass murder just took place last week in California where a man brutally killed his entire family. In the last month, adults in many states are defying the clear definition of marriage presented in our constitution and by Jesus Christ himself in Matthew 19:4-5. A well-known television star was declared guilty on all counts of greed, deception, fraud and cheating the stock market system. A third-grader was caught with a handgun in school. Sexual predators lurk in many Internet chat rooms seeking whom they may devour. The pornography industry puts out approximately 700 porn movies a month.
God help us truly repent and change.

Donate Eyes
Editor, Times Union:The cornea has been called the front window of the eye. If it becomes coned or liquid slips through, vision is impaired. Sight can be restored, however, by stitching in place of the defective cornea a healthy cornea from a donated eye.
Many people have had their sight restored in this way, but the problem is that there are still not enough donated eyes to provide a healthy cornea for those who need a transplant.
Take time to have a conversation with your family and indicate on your driver's license your desire to donate your eyes and other organs.
It is impossible to describe the joy and appreciation the recipient of your donated eye will experience.

Freedom
Editor, Times Union:It seems I've opened a can of worms. You know, the greatest things about living in this country is our freedom. The freedom to choose our own religion, the freedom of speech, and yes, even the freedom to choose who we love and want to spend the rest of our lives with. Gay marriage is still a very touchy subject, and those who disapprove are not scared of homosexuality, but millions of Americans still believe in the Holy Bible, where it says being gay is wrong and it is a sin.
I'd like to reiterate what I said in my first letter, "If a person decides they are homosexual, fine," but it's not the people they'll have to face in the end, it's God. As for what we are teaching our children, yes, love and unity are good, but it also teaches them confusion. Who will they call "mommy" and who will they call "daddy"?
This is supposed to be better for the economy? In 20 or 30 years these children will be running this economy; just what this country needs is more confused adults!

Rumors
Editor, Times Union:Could you please tell me why vicious rumors get started that are not true? This letter is of concern to the people of Pierceton, a place that I now am ashamed to call home. I opened a small business last November on the south edge of town. We have great food, a clean environment, courteous service and we try to please the people of our community. If we don't have what the customer is looking for to eat, we send them on to one of the other restaurants in town that do have that particular item. But, as it goes now, I just don't know about the people here. I have called this town and area home for over 30 years. I have waited on a lot of the townspeople, personally, over the past 10 years. I try to keep my money local, to help keep area people employed. All it takes is one bad apple, and the whole town suffers, and I am at the head of the list. I know who started the rumors, and hopefully this will stop them. I would hate to have to bring counsel in, but if this keeps up, I will. The previous operators of this cafe are not my concern. The present is my concern. If you have not stopped in to see us, then you do not know how nice the cafe really is. I wish to personally thank everyone who does patronize us. The open sign is on, come on in and check us out.

Confusion
Editor, Times-Union:On March 10, there were two letters published by two very confused young ladies regarding homosexuality, marriage and basic human rights.
That homosexual acts are depraved and gravely disordered is fact. Homosexuality is condemned in sacred scripture and in the Catholic Church, even in the new Catechism (#2357). It doesn't matter what you or I or any other human thinks about it. The act definitively turns the soul away from God. The temptation however does not. If those afflicted by this proclivity could try to see themselves as children of God rather than label themselves as "gays" or "lesbians" or whatever, it might help them to see the folly of their clamoring for marriage.
Marriage is defined as a divinely instituted union between a man and a woman (cf. Genesis) that has as its primary purpose the transmission of life and the upbringing of children. Companionship is secondary. Christ raised this divine institution to the dignity of a sacrament: meaning that Christ is present in every sacramental marriage. Homosexual acts are completely devoid of this grace, which begs the question: why would these poor souls even want marriage? To make a mockery of God?
As to the issue of "basic human rights," I have a natural aversion to ambiguity and so to me, this phrase is perplexing. Does it have a definition? Apparently not. I entered "basic human rights" into a search engine and there were over one and a half million entries but not one definition. Next I tried a Web site I thought might treat this subject impartially, the United Nations'. There I found the subject of human rights and many "articles" in a "declaration" of human rights but no definition and no mention anywhere of a "right" for homosexuals to unite in marriage. It is impossible for anyone to violate a "basic human right" that does not exist.
There does exist help for these individuals who are, after all, created in the image and likeness of God with free will. There is a wonderful Web site called "COURAGE Apostolate" that specifically ministers to same-sex attraction. There are more links on the Web site that are helpful. Just take the first step.
