Election

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing at this time to voice my observation regarding the upcoming elections, primarily concerning the race for sheriff of Kosciusko County. I personally feel every candidate running for sheriff would be a good choice for that honorable and notable position. Whoever is elected will have a tremendous chore in emulating the fine sheriff that currently serves in that position. I am a former resident of Kosciusko County, and recall only one other sheriff that served with such honor and above reproach, Sheriff Andrews.

However, one candidate stands out from the rest of the candidates. I have seen his heart personally as a special friend. I've grown to respect and love that man very much over the past three years I've been privileged to be a friend. This man has had many battles in the past few years, not only battling back from the ugly lymphoma the devil tried to kill him with, but also financial battles because of the illness. I have never seen a man face and overcome so great a challenge as what Wally Knox has. It's amazing how he has managed to care and provide for his precious family on so little over the past 4-5 years and still keep smiling and getting up to face another day. As to qualifications, this candidate is the only college graduate in criminal justice that I have ever heard of in my entire lifetime as a resident of Indiana. His many years of service on the Warsaw Police Department, first as an undercover narcotics investigator, and later patrolman, serve as more of experience than most sheriffs have when elected. Prior to service to the Warsaw Department, Wally served in Florida for a county sheriff department as a drug enforcement officer. Prior that he was a prison guard at Michigan State Prison, Jackson, Mich. One of the most dangerous and high security prisons in the country. Most officers would shake in their boots if they were forced to face prisoners of the sort that are incarcerated there. This man shines as one of the most dedicated law enforcement officers I have ever had the privilege to know or meet. He does not compromise; and believe me, with all the drug and alcohol abuse problems Kosciusko County is faced with, the county needs a sheriff that will not back down on his moral and legal obligations. Wally can be "bullheaded" at times, but in a positive way. He would never compromise or "sell out" to the citizens he serves. He is truly an officer of the law for the people!

Whether Wally wins the candidacy for sheriff or not, he is already a winner in my eyes. He is an overcomer, and has truly learned the way to overcome any obstacle that may face him. He has put Christ first in his life. He has many friends on the local and county forces, and I hope he considers me a friend though I have been going through battles of my own lately, and have neglected supporting him as a friend. I cannot cast my vote for him since I live across the county line into Marshall County, but, if I could, he would have my vote. He is a winner in my eyes! (Wally Knox) Wally, we love you!
