Bias
Editor, Times-Union:Media bias, as with many things in life, can depend on one's opinions and points of view. I can quote stats and figures obtained from various sources that would indicate a conservative bias. How much credence is put into that information depends on one's point of view.
In view of the scandal overload of the present administration, I should think if there is indeed a liberal bias in the media, then a ground-swell movement calling for impeachment should have begun by now.
Starting a war based on lies, irresponsible record debt, outing a covert agent, wiretapping U.S. citizens and now the Dubai Ports debacle. If these things, just to name a few, don't scream impeachment, I don't know what does.
Our culture has been dumbed-down into a state of malaise and apathy. And I fault the lack of investigative, hard-hitting news stories for this. Oprah or Dr. Phil's the place for mindless "fluff." Leave my news alone.
Our democracy has been replaced by an oligarchy consisting of spinmasters, neocon gasbags and special interest. We have the best government money can buy and it's not worth much. I'm ashamed to admit that many democrats are guilty as well.
I fear the time for change has already passed. Instead of "nation-building" half way around the world, perhaps we should begin here.

Not A Democrat
Editor, Times-Union:To our elected, second-term President of the United States of America:
In his State of the Union address to our nation, our President gave us many things to think about and to start doing to make our nation greater than it has ever been. He warns us of the enemies that we are at war with who have no honor. They are thugs and religious idiots who kill those who do not believe as they do. We must use every weapon we have in defeating them.
What is even worse is the total disrespect of the Democratic Party at the State of the Union Address given by the President of all the people of these United States of America. The use of the Democratic Party bull at the funeral for a woman we were honoring, whose husband died in the pursuit of the American dream of freedom.
I would certainly be ashamed to be called a Democrat.

Editor, Times-Union:Just want to say "thanks" to the Governor of Indiana for the way he has improved the service to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
My car license plates are due April 30. I sent the check to Indianapolis on Feb. 1. After this long wait I have not received my car license plates. For several years we mailed the form and check to Warsaw. After about three or four days our plates came back in the mail. Is this the new improvement?

Innocence Lost
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is in response to John Swick's letter titled "Live and Let Live" in the March 1 newspaper.
On points one and three, I think most people would agree. However, on point two, the one about Anthony DeMarco, I have to ask, "Are you serious?"
You have an adult who preys on innocent children, by creating a friendship with the child's parents, earning their trust, then violates the child and the child is the one you turn part of the blame to because they didn't go to their parents? Do you not ever watch reported crimes of this nature in the news? For years, we as adults have tried to convince our children to come to us when this happens and for years, more and more children bury what is happening the them, deep within themselves. This is due to brainwashing, threats or whatever. This is the perpetrator's plan.
The problem does not lie with the children, it lies with the perverts out there who create a world of trust and then they violate the child! Now, the children (not child) involved are not only changed for life, they now must contend with heartless comments like yours.
It is what it is ... an unforgivable assault on the innocent of this world, for nothing more than the perpetrator's own selfish and sickening satisfaction. The child/children need compassion and emotional support, not "judgement" for how they handled a situation, of which they never ever should have been put in and forced to make any decision.
The blame belongs with one person and one person only and it most certainly is not the child!

Destroyed Property
Editor, Times-Union:A few months ago I woke up to a lot of noise outside.
Looking out my front door, I saw a lot of men and machines tearing up my front yard. All three acres of it.
I got dressed and went to the door.
At 86, I'm like that commercial. I can walk but not very far.
I went out on the deck and caught one fellow's eye and motioned for him to come.
I asked him what on earth were they doing. Well, they were digging a deep trench to put down what looked like an orange hose. He said it was for telephone and a lot of other things.
They cut my phone line.
I asked why they didn't ask permission. He said they didn't have to.
Never in my life have I seen anyone do such sloppy work and take no pride in their work.
They did their idea of filling the trench but it looks like an earthquake has gone through my property. I have a large trench across my front yard. All three acres of it. In some places it's about a foot wide and from a foot to a foot-and-a-half deep. Across both driveways, too.
Each time it rains, my front yard in front of the house drops.
It is now almost a foot lower than the road.
I can not step across or up to the road because I lose my balance.
And when I fall I cannot get up by myself. I have to wait until someone comes by and helps me up.
Indiana law states that the property must be left in the same condition as it was found.
My yard was even with the road and grass all the way.
I've been advised to get a lawyer. But since the lawyer my husband and I had, Mr. Lee Bazini - a more honest and compassionate man we've never met - has passed away. I haven't been able to find one that doesn't charge two arms, two legs and three heads, something I can't afford.
I contacted the Warsaw School superintendent's office and talked to a very nice gal. I explained that if two school buses should pass and the tires on one side of the bus hits the trench, it will role on its side and slide down the embankment.
She contacted the gal that is in charge of the school buses and, bless her heart, she drove out and looked things over.
It wasn't long before a county highway truck came out and they sat in their truck parked on the wrong side of the road for one half hour.
Then the truck from the company that dug that trench came.
They went east of my property line and dug a hole and filled it in -Ênot a very good job, my neighbor said - and then they went west of my property line and I don't know what they did there but they never did a thing on my property.
If I had the money I would be very tempted to get bags of instant cement and fill the whole thing in. So what do I do now?

Blame The Media
Editor, Times-Union:Colleague, Matt? Well, OK, I guess I can live with that. At least you didn't say comrade.
I think you finally hit something we can agree on, at least in part. I don't own a computer so I had no idea people were copying letters like that. That's pretty sad to say the least. I'm sure if the Times-Union were to learn a letter was copied like that, it would be trashed. I can't see that that's much different than an anonymous letter.
Where we part ways here is with your statement that the media is "the greatest defender of one of our most sacred rights: freedom of speech." I assume you meant "freedom of speech, or of the press."
The problem with that, as I see it, Matt, is that seems to be the only part of the Constitution the media is interested in defending. The First Amendment was set up specifically so that the media would be the watchdog of liberty, alerting the people to any and all transgressions of their Constitutional rights. (Huff puff. Too long a sentence, wasn't it?)
Anyway, I think the media, both right and left, have dropped the ball in that respect. There seems to be little or no centrist (if that's the proper word) media today. In fact, I firmly believe the media is responsible for much of the divisiveness of today's society.

SB2128
Editor, Times-Union:I want to update the community on a bill that's in Washington right now. SB2128 will silence the "grassroots activists" and make it extremely difficult for you to contact your legislator. According to this amendment, if you want to inform a group of people around you what is happening in Congress, you will have to register 20 days before you do (to inform the other side) and expose your bank account. This bill is authored by John McCain, and another by Harry Reid. It's intended to clean up the lobbying mess in Washington; but in trying to fix the "inside" problems, they will be putting a muzzle on us. Are they tired of reading letters? Answering phone calls? It's quite ironic; by writing this letter to the editor, I wouldn't even have time to register! This bill is flying through with lightning speed. Do you want a voice? It's time to call your senator, and ask them to remove the grassroots language in SB2128. You can read the bill in its entirety at thomas.loc.gov Reclaim your First Amendment rights!
