Editor, Times Union:I am writting this letter in response to a letter which was printed in the March 2, 2000, Times-Union.
It was stated by Jim Wells that the athletic dept. of Wawasee High School is a disgrace to the public school system, that the only reason Wawasee won as many ball games as they did was because of Shanna Zolman on their team, and that the only people who participate in sports are the ones whose parents contribute to the school system, and that the 1-21 record of the boys basketball team was only because the best players were overlooked for the ones whose parents padded the pockets of the school system.
Mr. Wells, where is the so-called plentiful evidence you supposedly have? What do you think your comments have done and will do to the morale of the many fine students and atheletes who have worked so hard every day, trying to be the very best they can be?
Where does a clown like you come off making a statement like that? If you can add and subtract you would know that for every winner in a game there has to be a loser so every team can't have a winning season.
As for the kids with money being the ones who make the team, baloney! I have been associated with the Wawasee School system for 21 years. Many of the athletes come from the middle to lower class families. Does that mean they are any better or worse of an athlete? It makes no difference.
As for Shanna Zolman you are correct. She is one heck of an athlete. But you sound as if it was Shanna against the opposing team. Wrong again. The Wawasee girls practiced hard, played hard, and anything good that happened to them this year, they all earned together as a fine, super coached teamed.
Are you making all the accusations toward Wawasee, only because you have experinced them in your own system? Think about it, Jimmy.

Editor, Times-Union:Tim Keyes has dazzled his fans once again. With his behind the back logic and no look reasoning, many defenders were left reacting too slow and scored upon. I don't know how one person can have so many contrasting views under one head of hair. Tim, you make dogmatic statement after dogmatic statement and then lift up "dogmatism" as the great evil of our day. You say, "we no longer live in a world of absolutes." Pretty hard nose, Tim. What about those who claim we do? You say with modern day, glass pulpit authority, that we "need to learn to accept and love each other." Timothy, my friend, are you telling us what to do? You spoke with authority that "there is no longer "right" or "wrong" and then turn around and say that it is wrong to "believe that our personal opinions are fact." Slick. Then, after calling me "my critic" (name calling?), you say I "incorrectly assumed." Are you telling me that my opinion of your letter was wrong? How could you? The fact is, Tim, I am beginning to feel "violated" by your narrow-mindedness. I know you and your peers, and unfortunately your parents, wish the words of the venerable Rodney King were gospel, and we could all "just get along" but while we live in a fallen world we can not expect the utopia you are trying to force upon us. Finally, you say, "we are free to think as we will, but not to act on those thoughts when the end result is detrimental to the good of society." Who, may I ask, according to your "my opinions are neither right or wrong" philosophy, is going to deem something detrimental or benificial to our society? Wouldn't that take a judgment from somebody? I guess what I am saying is that if you base your following argument on the quicksand of "absolutes" bashing you just simply sink into a pit of inconsistencies.

Capital Punishment
Editor, Times-Union:I respectfully respond to the e-mail from M. L. Stevens published on Friday 3 March 2000:
God actually wrote out for Moses (and for us), "You shall not murder." Exodus 20:13
It is because human life is so sacred that God actually prescribed capital punishment. In Genesis 9:6, "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man." This responsibility is reserved to duly constituted governments (such as the state of Texas).
We are much more apt to have a nice day if society is guided by clearly defined moral standards of right and wrong with appropriate results for transgressions.

Editor, Times-Union:The call has been going out for the past several months for help in the building of the new Lakeland Christian Academy east of present location. Since I have found out the past few years, building things just isn't my cup of tea, because I cut twice and it is still too short. I thought work crews need to eat, so I set up a date with the man in charge to go to the building site and cook some of my good chili for the group. The date was set for Saturday March 4th. There were the more mature to the young people there, even a senior at LCA. The number of people I was to feed was 15, so I made enough to feed 15 people. After the two lovely young ladies went around taking head count of all who was going to eat the number was 27, almost double the amount I cooked for. At 11:50 a.m. the hungry workers started to arrive and a blessing of the food was said, there were 27 plus those who came later. Some ate 2 to 3 bowls of chili. The bowles were 9-oz. bowls, I took home 2 bowls. Why did so little feed so many? You figure it out. ...

Congrats To Tigers
Editor, Times-Union:As a faithful fan and sister of one of the players, I would like to congratulate the Warsaw High School Boys Junior Varsity Basketball Team on a great season! Under the superb coaching of Doug Ogle and his assistants, these young men just completed an undefeated season! The team was low in numbers this year with only 9 players on the roster, but that didn't stop them! They all played hard and accomplished the ultimate goal - no losses!Ê Members of the JV team are: Brian Johnson, David Fawley, Jason Foster, Jerad Shaw, Seraj Datta, Nick Bolesky, Greg Clay, Geoff Walmer, and Chris Clay. Good job guys and thanks for an exciting season!

Crime And Punishment
Editor, Times-Union:In reference to the piece on "Capital Punishment" by Michael L. Stephens March 3...
The Scripture you reference is Exodus 20:3, "You shall not murder" (NKV). Then in Genesis 9:6 we read "Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed: For in the image of God He made man." Now this divinely established statute has never been rescinded in Scripture and is valid today as it was in the past.
This is to serve as a strong reminder that we are made in the image of God. Innocent blood is not to be shed. This can help build a just society which will benefit all humankind.

Big Trucks
Editor, Times-Union:To the driving population in general...
I am fed up to my eyebrows with the gripes about the big trucks. Some of you seem to believe that they get their kicks out of running stop signs, stop lights, speeding and are out to get you when nothing could be further from the truth! Statistically, only 4 percent of them are ever involved in a fatal accident - guess who are involved in the other 96 percent?
Yes, there are some truckers who are less competent then others, but I doubt there is one out there who would, willingly, risk life and limb (theirs or anyone else's) much less upwards of $60,000 in the equipment they drive or a $100,000 plus load.
Wake up people and look around you! Look around your home, your garage, your barn, in your refrigerator, your pantry and realize what the truckers bring to your everyday lives. Realize also that for every trucker who is less than perfect, there are a thousand who run millions of miles without a ticket or accident. I know this for a fact because I know a bunch of them and have three in my family: husband, daughter and nephew. Some of these drivers have a record of 30 years of safe driving and paid a lot of money to get the training to enable them to achieve that record.
I wonder how many of you would be willing to spend hours in a stinking meat-packing plant, try to sleep with a noisy reefer running behind your head, eat and shower in a truck stop or be away from your home, family and friends for weeks at a time.
That's the reality of a trucker's life. Let's not forget the traffic, construction zones and some incredibly over-confident and stupid drivers.
Every time you're out driving around a big truck, make sure you see that driver in their side-view mirror. You will meet a pair of incredibly alert eyes. Watch for them and remember -Êif you can't see them, they can't see you.

Editor, Times-Union:Valley 8th grade girls basketball team -
Throughout your Middle School years your 45-0 record shows what excellent athletes you are. But I am proud of the way you continue to conduct yourselves withÊ"class" beyond your years.
Thank you for dedicating the game to my dad, Tom Miller. I am sure he was watching this game just as he did all the others (with overzealous voiced opinions of the referees' calls) cheering each and every one of you on ... except this time he had a different view.
I want you to know that you are all champions off the floor as much as you are on.
