Athletic Teams
Editor, Times-Union:I am writing this in response to a letter which was printed in the Monday February 28th paper. I feel that the Wawasee athletic programs in general is a disgrace to the public school system. Shanna Zolman is an amazing athlete and if it were not for her the Warriors would be bringing up the rear as usual. The problem is that they recruit players based on their parents contributions to the school system and their financial status. You would assume I am some poor former student who did not like the program but my parents and I are very financially secure. I am just writing this to bring attention to the problem. My evidence is plentiful. Look at all the controversy and the athletic records. I believe the boys basketball was 1-21 last year. There is no excuse for this type of performance other than they did not choose the better athletes instead they chose those with the bigger pocket book. I hope this letter did not offend anyone but instead will result in better athletics at Wawasee.

Schooling
Editor, Times-Union:This is in response to the letter written on school policies on Tuesday, Feb. 22. I am deeply sorry that your children are being harassed and that the teachers are swearing at them in the Warsaw School system. This kind of behavior should not be tolerated in any school system. Unfortunately, it seems that many school systems across the country, not just Warsaw, are experiencing similar problems. Pick up a newspaper and read about the latest school shooting or similarly horrible incident. It is plainly clear that this country's schools are floundering. But like anything else, we do have other choices and options. Why not try home-schooling?
Four years ago, when my oldest child was ready to start kindergarten, a friend suggested home-schooling to me. At the time, I was very skeptical about the whole idea. How on earth could I teach my own children? So, I began to do a lot of research on the subject. What I discovered was that as a parent, I was the perfect person to teach my child. Nobody knows my child better than I do. I know their strengths as well as their weaknesses. I began to feel more confident about the whole idea and decided to try it for a year.
I have now been home-schooling for four years and I plan to continue. My daughter has had many opportunities to go on field trips and social events with other home-schooled children her own age. We know many families who home-school and the children just love to get together and play. She also loves to play the piano and is involved in gymnastics at the YMCA. I do believe she is getting a very well-rounded education. I realize, due to various circumstances, that not all parents can home-school. But, if you can stay home with your children, think about it. It may just be the most enriching decision you'll ever make.
