Coach McBride

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing this letter in response to the actions taken by the Triton School Board, parents and players against Coach Mike McBride. I find myself as a graduate of Triton High School, former athlete and parent of Triton graduates and athletes totally appalled by the actions taken. Previously, I was proud to say I was from Triton, but today, I find myself embarrassed and totally ashamed to be associated with the Triton School Corp. In an era of equal representation, I find it very alarming that a coach can be removed from his position without even the chance of defending himself, and according to the articles in local papers, no one stood up for him. I wonder, could this have been because the meeting was held in secret? No support was given, because we as supporters of Coach McBride were not aware of any such meeting. Had we been aware of this meeting, I am sure there would have been supporters there including my family and me. What might you say does that mean? It means that my son had the privilege of playing for Coach McBride for two seasons and is proud of it. As a parent, I am glad my son had the opportunity to do so.

When the issue of not playing certain players is addressed, it does not always mean playing the players with the most seniority, but rather the players who are willing to work and who are your best players despite the fact they are underclassmen. All this seems to be a Catch 22, because you see a coach is suspended for first yelling at his players and not playing the proper players, but if he does not win, he also is fired. Where is the sense to all of this?

Over the years, I have played for coaches who yelled, screamed and made us work until we didn't think we could go anymore, and many of you reading this letter played for the same coaches. Today, when I meet these men on the street, I still have to address them as Coach because of the respect I have for them. You see, they not only taught us how to be players, but to be men of integrity.

One questions I would like to ask is where was our administration in all of this? Shouldn't someone have stepped up and said we need to have all parties present, both accused and accusers? No, it was easier to try and ruin a young coach's career in private without even so much as informing him that there was going to be a meeting.

Finally, I hope all parties involved (school board, administrators, athletic director, parents and players) can feel good about their decisions concerning this matter.

Coach McBride, I thank you for being my son's coach for two varsity seasons, and even though we were not allowed to attend the meeting concerning your suspension, I want you to know that we support you. You made a positive impact on my son both on and off the court. Success is not in how many games you win or lose, but rather in the coach of integrity you are.

Churchill Speaks Truth

Editor, Times-Union:
In the far away land of upside down, the world is filled with confusion, where reality is exchanged for an obvious illusion. Where in is out and out is in, so they don't know where they're going and they don't know where they've been. In the land of topsy-turvy, a place where up is down, everything is different, the wheel's not even round. Logic is illogical and reason is unsound. One can look around the world. Bigger fools will not be found than those who inhabit the land of upside down.

The king of upside down land has no Midas touch, so everything he touched just seems to turn to dust. Although the pieces of the puzzle are right before his eyes, he'll never put them together no matter how hard he tries. When down is up and up is down, it causes much confusion, which is firmly connected to the obvious illusion.

The queen of upside down land's attire is such a flop, for the top is on the bottom, and the bottom's on the top. The queen got so frustrated she fired the royal chef. If she can't get control of herself, there will be nobody left. She has no taste for fine cuisine, she thinks it's quite obscene, she likes to have her royal meal of ribs and pork and beans. And when it comes to fashion, just like I've said before, her upside down attire will get the lowest score.

The world views topsy turvy land with a great amount of suspicion, if truth is lie and lie is truth, then that's a grave condition. The people of topsy turvy land must turn things around, so that up can be up again and down can be down. But when they try to speak, no voices can be found, because sound is silence and silence is sound.

It seems that topsy turvy land is doomed to isolation, although they seem quite wealthy that is no consolation. the world will shun topsy turvy land because lying is such a sin, then they will teach them about reality and how to stop the spin. And if that is successful, then a new age will begin. Then up will be up and down will be down, and the truth will be truth again.

I want to dedicate this letter to Ward Churchill, a Colorado University professor who is being persecuted for speaking the truth. He may be fired, he will have his character assassinated, or he may be blindfolded and forced to stand up against the brick wall with other truth tellers who must be eliminated. Those who speak truth must be silenced. I've listened to this man speak for two hours, I never once heard him tell a lie. His words were not that of a mad man, but that of a very aware and intelligent man. One must not choose to be aware and intelligent, because that's a dangerous thing.

Just exactly what kind of message does this send to the children?

Elementary Track

Editor, Times-Union:
It is a mistake to reduce the elementary school track programs!

I am a former Warsaw track and field athlete who graduated from Purdue University on a college track scholarship. I still hold the Warsaw Mile record and I look forward to meeting the girl who breaks it. I now reside in Texas with a very successful career in sales. I was raised by a hardworking single parent and we had little in the way of material possessions or a fancy house. At a young age, I knew I had to accomplish more than was expected of me. I decided to focus my energy on running. I wasn't the best athlete at first. Competing in the city track meet was frustrating for me but also motivating. Kids competed from all over town and I realized I needed to work harder if I were to eventually win. I enjoyed competing in grade school and it taught me how to work hard, work in a team environment and the coaches made me feel important.

I think it is a mistake to eliminate the city track meet!

It is an important event that gives young children the first glimpse of competition. It gives kids a needed goal. That's what our children today are missing - how to set goals and work hard to achieve them.

Having a few track meets is good, but having a meet to include all the schools will set the tone for your track programs in junior high and high school. The city is missing the boat if they eliminate this event. If track and field is not important to the city, it won't be important to the kids.

The track program in high school will probably deteriorate as a result. I may never have developed an interest in track if it weren't for my early experiences at Lincoln Elementary. I am grateful everyday for the "hype" Warsaw gives to its student athletic programs. I am thankful for the photos of me running that were placed in the Times-Union. All of this helped me excel. However, it all started with the elementary city meet!

I see Gary Gerard has joined the "Gee Mom, everyone else is going. Why can't I?" crowd.

Three time zones, we actually have only two at any one time. Which hardly makes us unique.

Buy a universal map of the U.S. and you will find the following states have two time zones. Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Upper Peninsula Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, Texas.

There have been many economic swings both up and down during the years and we have been on the current time zones and to blame the clock for them is just plain stupid.

I'm sure you can go the golf course or marina and find a handful of people who wouldn't care if it stayed light until midnight. But if you poll the thousands who go to work at 5 or 6 a.m. and you will probably get a different story.

The fact that this bill came from Carmel tells me it is just the elite trying to increase their playtime at the expense of the rest of us.

Save energy, I seem to remember DST during WWll when an oil shortage wasn't even a remote possibility. 600,000 barrels of oil isn't even a tanker full, about the equivalent of a shovel full of coal in a locomotive.

I favor leaving well enough alone.
