Taped Board Meetings
Editor, Times-Union:On Feb. 20, 2004, I called the Warsaw Community Schools Central Administration Office to request a copy of the tape recording of the February 2004 school board meeting. Dr. McGuire informed me that as of January the board meetings are no longer being taped. He said that he made the decision due to "technical difficulties caused by aging equipment." I reminded Dr. McGuire of a conversation we had in October 2003 regarding the inaccuracies of the September 2003 board minutes that were posted on the school corporation's Web site. At that time the site said that more than 100 people attended the meeting to share their support and concerns regarding the school closings. In reality, more than 500 patrons were present and when polled, more than 90 percent expressed concerns, not support, for Dr. McGuire's plans. These inaccuracies concern me. We all count on factual reporting of information by our public officials.
If aging equipment is the reason tapes of board meetings are not being made, then perhaps new equipment should be purchased. Surely our school corporation can afford a few microphones and a tape recorder. After all, we are saving "$300,000" with the closing of three schools. Dr. McGuire, what's the real reason our school corporation is no longer taping board meetings?
